Great budget bungalows!
7 / 10
Mar 2010, godders2002@hotmail.com

Maspalomas Lago was lovely to stay in! Literally just come back from spending a week there and have to say that we really enjoyed every minute of it.
Maybe because it's out of season, the resort was quiet in terms of entertainment but that's why you go into Playa del Ingles or Maspalomas itself! If you're the kind of person who loves a Happy Hour - 2.50EURO for 2 pints is UNBELIEVABLE! (That's what it cost me 2 days ago when we decided to spend a few hours just lounging around the pool!)
Another great postive - literally 5-10 mins walk from the Yumbo Centre. Just walk alongside the main road outside (and no, traffic noise isn't a problem) and it's literally just around the block!
The accommodation is basic, admittedly, but come on - you're on holiday so go out and see things! You don't want to be stuck in the resort all holiday.
Ideal for couples and friends.
TIP - Be the first to check in! Toasters and Kettles are on a limited basis apparently so first come-first served!

Absolutely Fine!

A friend and I stayed at this hotel last November and found it absolutely fine. There really anything to do on site so we walked down to the Faro 2 centre most nights (plenty of nice restaurants on 5min walk) and Playa del Ingles if we fancied something more exciting.
There is a bar on site but the opening hours are limited. We went there for happy hour seeing as it was right next to the pool (4pm 5pm) but most nights we had a drink in the apartment when we'd finished our meal.
The room was cleaned every other day and the bedsheets and towels were changed every time the cleaners came in. They also did our washing up for us a couple of times, which was very nice of them. We got there at 4am thanks to our flight being delayed but reception was open and we barely had to wait before getting our keys. There are no kettle or toaster in our room but we asked at the reception and a toaster was provided. We didn't bother asking for a kettle as we had a saucepan so we just boiled water on the hob. I'd recommend taking your own tea bags and coffee as the local shops are not that cheap. Everything's about the same price as it is over here so what's the point in buying a whole jar of coffee or packet of tea bags when you're only there for a week?
The hotel isn't right next to the beach but there are plenty of restuarants and so on within walking distnce. We walked to Maspalomas beach one day despite the high temperature and it took around 30mins. We probably would have walked again but taxis were so cheap that there didn't seem any point. It cost between 4 and 5 euros to go to the beach and around the same for Playa del Ingles.
For anyone going to Maspalomas I would highly recommend the camel rides through the dunes as it's a great way to see them without having to walk. We also went to Aqualand (25 euros but kids will love it), on the PAL free trip (it's free - if you get offered it then go!), Sioux City and to the local market. I bought an AA travel guide and it had loads of fantastic ideas for trips. Without it we probably would have ended up on the stupidly overpriced Thomas Cook tours. Camel riding was around 30 euros with Thomas Cook but we only paid 12!
All in all I recommend the hotel, I recommend the area and I recommend Thomas Cook (even if their trips are v expensive).

Worse Hotel EVER!!!!

we have just got back after spending 2 weeks at this resort and can honestly say it was awful! We stayed at the same resort 2 years ago and although it was cheap and cheerful we had a really good week and didn't have many complaints about it, the staff where so much more friendly and the the pool bar was open to a lot later and the rooms where a lot cleaner ,
We booked a bungalow for 4 people and when we arrived there was a room with 2 single beds in and in the sitting area there was a sofa and then next to the kitchen area there was a broken camp bed! we arrived at 3 in the morning and could get any fans for the room as there was no air con, we complained a number of times about the bed as we ended up taking turns sleeping on it and and apart from my 9 year old son we all did are backs in, towards the end of the first week they did give us another mattress but the slats still kept breaking. We where told by our rep if we wanted to keep our room on the last day as our pick up wasn't till 11.30 we would have to ask reception 24 hours before and it would cost 15 euros, we went doen to reception 3 times to try and sort it out and in the end they said we couldn't keep our room but we could pay 48 euros to keep another room we phoned the rep to see if they could sort something out as they had told us one thing and the hotel was telling us another we normally would not have bothered but we had been hit by a freak sand storm and the temp had gone up to 55 degrees so there was no way we could sit out in it all day, Thomas cook where useless and extremely road on the end of the phone and no good whats so ever! we have booked all out holidays through them every time but will not be using them again the rep was never in the hotel when it stated she would be
We would not recommend this hotel to ANYONE and don't get me started on the infestation of cockroaches!!!!

Myself and my partner have just returned from a week at Maspalomas Lago and i can't fault the occomodation or facilities on site, yes ok the bungalows are fairly basic, but for a 3* rated complex it is ideal and great value for money, it's definately a place i would return to again!! All of you moaning about no kettle/toaster, no fan, cock-roaches, what do you expect for your money?? We asked for a kettle + toaster and got one within the hour, the bracket which fixes the shower to the wall was broken on arrival, so we went to reception and again the service was great and it was fixed straight away. We saw two roaches in our apartment throughout the whole week so no complaints from us.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and speak very good english, we also had maid service every other day and they even washed the pots!! IF YOU WISH TO GO SUPERMARKET SHOPPING I WOULD SUGGEST GOING TO THE SPAR SHOP JUST UP THE HILL TOWARDS PLAYA DEL INGLAIS, IT IS MUCH BETTER VALUE THAN FARO 2. Other than that the food is good at faro 2, el nublo and the steak house on top floor very good!!!
Overall our holiday was great, The large swimming pool at the Maspalomas Lago was amazing and very clean, plenty of sun beds and great weather, ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!!
ps.... I would never book with THOMAS COOK AGAIN, DIDN'T RATE THEIR SERVICE!

Just returned from a week at the Lago apartments and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Apartments are basic with twin beds in bedroom and sofa bed in lounge. Bathroom and kitchen ok, but no toaster or kettle or oven - just two electric rings to cook with. Apartments need a bit of TLC in places, but maid service was good and staff at reception and in bar friendly and efficient.
You have to pay for TV at 3 euros for 24 hours, though BBC World is free.
Nice patio area, looking over well tended gardens.
We were self catering, but had a look in restaurant and breakfast looked ok, though we were less enthused about evening meal which looked poor. Pool bar did snacks at lunch time which were ok. We ate mostly at the Faro 2 centre 10 minutes away - highly recommend El Nublo - much the best restaurant there at decent prices. Watch for prices of drinks all over though - the euro being so strong is a killer at the moment.
Apartments need a bit of TLC in places, but maid service was good and staff at reception and in bar friendly and efficient.
Pool was lovely and loads of sunbeds, though it did get busy (and noisy) at the weekend when a lot of Spanish seemed to descend on the place.
Playa del Ingles is a few minutes away. We visited the Kasbah CC a few times and it was ok, but be prepared to be hassled by touts from early morning to late in the evening. Other parts of Playa del Ingles are rather tacky and seedy. You are better off staying in and around Maspalomas.
Holiday World funfair is five minutes walk from apartments and worth a visit. Aqua Park not too far away either.
Perhaps not for us for a hard earned two week summer holiday, but would not hesitate in returning, for a cheap winter/spring break.
Finally, if you go with Thomas Cook watch out for the hard sell of tours/timeshare/sun lotions at the welcome meeting. If you have any general questions about accommodation/resort they didn't want to know - more interested in signing you up to earn their commissions. That was the only downside to the holidays.
Oh and finally, watch your luggage weight at the airport. After a 90 minute wait (thanks to inefficient staff at check in preferring to chit chat to mates rather than reduce the ever increasing queue) to check in I had to shell out 11 euros because I was one kilo over
limit.

If you are wanting a basic holiday then this complex is fine. We went as a family with my 4 year old daughter. The accommodation was very basic with 2 single beds and a sofa in the lounge area. If you require a kettle or iron then you will need to hire one from the reception area. Our main gripe was the fact that all three swimming Pools were extremely cold (ice cold). The very tiny baby/childrens pool really needed to be warmer as a lot of the children (including my daughter) would not get in as it was freezing. Be careful if the tiles around the pool area are wet as these are extremely slippery and numerous people slipped on them. Overall we had a reasonable holiday but we would not return the this particular complex even though the area itself is very nice.

We went as a couple, no children, and found the accommodation very satisfactory for a budget holiday. It was very quiet and peaceful (we were in one of the apartments furthest from the pool)and the surroundings were pleasant and spacious. The rooms lack privacy as passers by can see in, but there were few passers by and you trusted them not to stare in and we didn't find it a problem, after feeling a bit exposed at first. We looked out for cockroaches but only saw one, on its back on the patio. Perhaps that's a summer problem? We really didn't have any complaints at all other than it could have been better equipped for self-catering. Everyone has to ask for a kettle at reception on a first come first served basis, which we thought was very silly, there really should be one in the room as a standard item. You can get a toaster too on request - more understandable as I think only the British toast bread! A microwave would have helped with choice for meals. There was no veg knife and no tin opener. We had a car and spent little time at the resort, going off exploring and walking in the mountains. It was perfect for that, just what we required.

A Balanced View...

... I hope. I stayed in these apartments as a budget holiday and if that's what you are doing, its pretty much OK. I probably wouldn't pay too much for them but overall, they were quite adequate. Here's the summary...
What's Good...
1/ The welcome is great and I found the staff were very cheerful and nice. You may find that some don't speak much English - especially support staff like cleaners etc but they are as helpful as they can be.
2/ Cleanliness - everything was nice and clean and staff came round every day to make up the beds, empty bins and even wash-up !
3/ There's a nice pool and a bar with a buffet every night so you don't have to go off the site if you don't want to. If you do, there's a centre nearby that stays open late plus the Faro Shopping Centre which is easily walkable.
4/ The apartments are light and airy plus each one has a balcony and beach furniture so you can sit out at night.
Not So Good...
1/ Facilities - 'Self-Catering' does mean just a two ring hob. There's no oven,no toaster and no kettle ! There's a big fridge and freezer though ! If you just want a cheap place to doss, fine. If you're thinking about complex meals on site, forget it !It can be limiting.
2/ The TV is pay-per-view so you will have to pay for the few English channels you get. You can get some free though so its worth testing it...
3/ Cockroaches were around - even in December. To their credit, the staff on site dealt very quickly with them. There were only a few and they didn't re-appear (the cockroaches that is...)
4/ It's basic ! Everything is worn - you could see through the worn down parts of our door and everything was well used (although it all worked fine). Itdoesn't look too good but its functional.
5/ The world and his wife stopped by - the cleaner has a key to get in but usually shouts and won't disturb you if the curtains are drawn. Halfway through the week though, two TV men came in with their own key and emptied the TV... regardless of people being in or what they could have been doing !
Now you make your own mind-up if its not too late ! I wouldn't mind another stop there but I just use it as a place to sleep. Its a bit of a way from Playa del Ingles (which tends to be livelier) and quite a walk from the Maspalomas beach but if you have booked by the time you read this...don't panic ! You'll be OK !

We've just come back from a week at the Lago and only booked it 3 weeks before. Looking at the review before we went was enough to make you wonder what you have booked into!
The welcome in the middle of the night was great - the rooms were clean and tidy and plenty spacious for 2 of us. Separate bedroom and living room. Bath and shower and a nice large fridge. Yes there were only 2 cooking rings but we didnt intend to cook anyway!
We saw one dead cockroach on the night of arrival and never another one in the apartment for the rest of the holiday.
The rooms have a lovely terrace and overlook the pool which is really pretty with palm trees all round it. Plenty of sunbeds - never a need to race to get one. In fact lots still stacked up all day.
On the first day we decided not to venture far and sampled the breakfast at the pool bar which for just under £4 was lovely - english bacon, sausages and heinz baked beans.
We also ate other meals there and all were lovely. A double burger and chips (massive!!) was again about £4.
Surprisingly the drinks prices at the Lago were the cheapest we found all holiday - need to be careful at some of the bars as happy hour doesnt always mean a cheap drink! But at the Lago all drinks cheap and happy hour from 4 - 5pm was great, 2 for the price of 1. A good start to your evening!
Lovely quiet location but cheap to get into Playa de Ingles - approx 3 euros. Round the corner from decent shopping centre - Faro 2 - with restaurants and supermarket. And close by is Holiday World - a fun fair and amusement area and in the evening cabaret entertainment. All within walking distance.
All the staff were pleasant and the maid even washed up when we'd left some bits in the sink!!
Although we didnt take children it would be perfect for families as all the apartments are around the pool and bar area and would be really safe to sit out and have a drink if the children were in bed right near you with a baby listener - i would certainly have gone here if id known about it when my children were young!
Weather wise we were extremely pleasantly surprised with the weather being into the 30's and very warm in the evenings also - but not to hot to sleep! Perfect.
All in all we would most definately return to the Lago - it was the most relaxing enjoyable last minute break we have ever taken and we havent yet been able to find any fault or downside.
Highly recommended!

I had read the review about the Maspalomas Lago before I went on holiday. There were mixed views from different holiday makers. I was not happy that some people had cockroaches in their apartments.
First night I arrived nearly 5am in morning I just wanted to go to sleep for a while as the meet and greet was at 12noon with the holiday reps on the sunday!
On looking around the place seems very nice, so was not going to unpack as very tired. Had a look in the little kitchen then picked up the dish towel, something moved then, something black and big with legs ! YEP a big black cockroach welcoming me to my home for the week ! yuck ! Got the brush and swept it outside.
Mentioned it to the reps on the sunday meeting and they said I could get a spray, hoping it would be the only one, I said should not need it ! ha! was I wrong oh yes very. That night I had a wee look around and found a dead one in cupboard under sink then one live one in pots & pans cupboard.
So got a spray from the cleaner she called them coccarraches still cockroaches and big and horrible, they were not staying in my kitchen for a week. oh no !
So I sprayed in the cupboard every night and around the door any space they could get in,then I stuffed up the spaces with tissue paper and sprayed that too.!
The next night I had a few dead ones in the cupboard so spray worked. That night I say something on the walls and in my bedroom, on closer look it seemed like they were baby coachroaches, so spray came out again and also the sandal to deal with them !
Apart from that I did have a lovely holiday in the lago. The pool was great and the restuarant good value for money.Very quiet at night as the bar closed at 11pm. Plenty other places to go out to nearby. If a few cockroaches do not bother you then the lago is a lovely place to have a holiday at.
You have your own terrace to sit at and no high floors as all on ground floor level. The sunsets were so colourful.

Great plave too stay, staff at reception are lovely! True its basic, there are SOME roaches-nothing ou cant handle though. We payed £240 for 2 weeks including flights, lets face it its budget accomodation so you cant expect everything to be ace! You get what ou pay for and its a pretty good deal! Buses run from a bus stop right infront of the hotel, to loads of places like the capital LAs Palmas which is great for a day out! And Atlantico ( a spanish shopping centre further up th coast which has a spanish language cinema etc, it is meant to cater for loacals and so prices are much cheaper, and restraunts and shops alot nicer, such as Mango Zara loads more, and a low cost supermarket to stock up on all the things you will need to cook on our hobs! Bus runs daily to the dunes which are great, playa del ingles near by which is good for a night out etc but great to be able to come back to the tranquility of lago!

The lago's were nice but basic, we had to go out to resturants to eat most of the evenings as we could not cook we ony had 2 rings, we could eat at the resturant but was told by the staff that it was only open when there were alot of people to cook for so we would have to eat at the poolside bar! The staff were very friendly and very helpful1 the maids were more than helpfull as they did everything!! even our washing up! Was a bit disappointed as there was no air conditioning in our room and could not sleep most nights as it was really hot! i enjoy the heat though! The pool was very clean except teh spanish!! They was disgusting, they had their little girls who looked under the age of tfour running around in nothing or thongs! when there men around! and it didnt seem as if they could be bothered to take their children to the toilet as on two occasions a spanish lady held her daughter who was still in nappies! over the grass and she urinated all over the grass and the other occasions a little girl just took off her nappy, sat by the pool and urinated, then her mom just got a toy watering can and washed it into the pool! the barstaff did shut the pool down straight away! The beach is quite far but it was only 3 euros in the taxi, it is in a quiet part of maspalomas but playa del ingles is only a five - 10 minute walk but a massive hill, and there a a few resturants a really good pub called the moonlight that had entertainment for all ages every night, that is only a 2 minute walk and is right by holiday world. It is very stirct tho at the lago as we were not aloowed any inflatables in the pool! In my opinion the bungalows were nice it was the people that made the holiday a bit disappointing, and i think that it caters for two many spanish people. We did not see any germans at all at the lago!!! I must warn you though, close all your windows and leave all your lights on when you go out as the amount of cockroachs i had to remove out of my bed at a night time was hurrendous! and its not like their tiny either! i also recomend that you get up early to reserve your sunbeds even though your not supposed to but you will not find one as the spanish get up earl yot get them! but we did enjoy our stay!
