We booked our holiday with Thomson and the hotel works with it so it receives only people from the UK. When they realised we were Greek they were so rude to us. They gave us the room right next to the kitchen and the breakfast room and said this is the only room left for... more

We arrived at the airport in Kavala and we cannot fault the transfers and the helpfulness of the Thomson staff. The weather was a bit iffy when we landed but we thought hey lets not worry too much about that. We were duly taken to the Galaxy and we were quite happy with the... more

Small and unfriendly
Having previously booked the holiday with a boyfriend, I then split up with him before going away. I therefore was holidaying by myself for the first time in my life. Having seen what Thomson said about the hotel being small and friendly, I thought that I would be fine there and would feel comfortable. What a mistake to make! From the first day Yannis, the hotel owner, seemed to dislike me, I thought that it was maybe because I was a lone female, but it turned out when I spoke to a young couple who also stayed there, that he was the same with them too. I think the real reason was that I spent very little time or money at the hotel and preferred to go into Limenas to eat and drink. Then again with the hospitality the way it was, can anyone blame me?! Yannis seemed totally disinterested in running a hotel and I can only liken him to a Greek Victor Meldrew! Thassos itself was as beautiful as ever though and I was very sad to leave the island (and my new friend!) after two glorious weeks. I am going back again in six weeks, but thankfully have somewhere else to stay as I will never go back to the Galaxy again.
Grumpy Basil Fawlty
We had a fantastic start to our first ime in Thassos a beautiful ferry crossing approx 30 mins surrounded with beautiful seagulls. On arrival at the Hotel Galaxy we were welcomed by Yannis & Poppy who seemed quite friendly ( how wrong can you be) Yannis is only happy when you spend money in his overpriced poxy pool bar (3.50 euro for small Amstel) a large Amstel or Mythos in the town 2.50 - 3.00 euro. The rooms were very small and very very basic but clean, ours was cleaned daily. There was no small fridge which most B & Bs seem to offer, I expect this is because Yannis expects you to buy from his bar. We bought Red Wine and the odd cool beer from the supermarket on our way back from the beach to drink on our balcony, unfortunately this was not a pleasant affair as you could feel Yannis looking up at the balcony checking out what you was drinking I felt like a naughty school girl !!! After a very hot day at the beach we chose to have a tea time swim, we showered by the pool before entering, I did about 4 lengths with a friend I had made during our holiday. On vacating the pool Yannis asked us if we could swim less vigorously as the tiles at the side of the pool had got wet. What !!!!! Its a swimming pool for gods sake. This guy loves his year after year cronies (OAPS) if you are over 45 then he will fall over backwards for you, we will never ever return to this hotel and I certainly think Thomson should review their grading of this "Small & Friendly "hotel .Having said all this Thassos is well worth revisiting next time we are staying at the Atheria (Kosmar) or book direct. Very basic
We booked a last minute deal through Thomson's.On arrival the transfers and organisation were excellent by Thomsons. The hotel was clean, but the rooms were extremely basic, the shower/bathroom was no more than a wet room due to the fact the shower curtain was broken.Sanitation in Greece is always a bit hit and miss. The was no waste basket for general rubbish within the room,so this was stored on the floor.Breakfast consisted of a red tray with watered down orange juice, two slices of white bread and on alternate days an egg(fried, boiled or scrambled)there was ample tea and coffee, but you did feel as though you could not ask for extra juice. The trays had to be returned to the kitchen,by ourselves. As for the owners he was extremely grumpy and she did seem disinterested in her guests. All guests were of a certain age so i would not recommend it for anyone below the age of 45.Thassos itself is a beautiful island and i could not recommend it enough. We met some really great people in the El Greco bar/restaurant and i would say it was the best place for a meal. Lovely time at the Galaxy
I was very surprised to read the latest reviews of the Hotel Galaxy. We stayed for two weeks in June and it was lovely. We found our room very clean, cleaned 6 days out of 7 and the staff working very hard and very pleasant. The breakfasts were basic but plenty for us, though we don't really eat big cooked breakfasts. The hotel is in an ideal location within walking distance of restaurants, shops the beach and buses. We found it to be very friendly, we made friends with many other people in the hotel and had a drink with them most evenings. We didn't find it noisy at all and everyone seemed to be in bed before 12pm. We found Yannis, Poppy and their daughter Katerina, lovely. We had two days and nights of torrential rain whilst we were there and Yannis did about 10 trips to different restaurants in his car on the evening to save people getting wet. Poppy was putting ointment on people who had mosquito bites and as we love walking Katerina and Yannis always had lots of advice about where we should walk to and what we should look out for. Even Poppy's mum would come out and wave at us. Yannis tested the swimming pool every evening for cleanliness and he didn't like people to take cups of tea and glasses near the pool because of breakages. When we were there in June there were no children staying in the hotel so nobody really took balls and lilos into it. It was the first time we had stayed at this hotel, our second holiday on Thassos, but we would definitely return. I thought I should write this review as the latest reviews seem to paint a very bleak picture of it (and no, i am not related to Yannis and Poppy). Perhaps the bad reviews have been made as nobody wants it to be fully booked next year.
Turned sour
The holiday turned a little sour after the owner wanted 50 euros for a key that was mislaid. He didn’t get the money as the key was found later on. He seemed very keen to hang around for the cash, even though the hotel had received a call from the finder 5 hours prior to me informing him of the loss. I had to discover about the message from the shop owner, after re tracing my steps. When the key was retrieved, he gave me and my partner the silent treatment for the rest of our stay. This didn’t bother us too much as we found him very smarmy and false in the first place. I loved the island of Thassos and will return soon. I will avoid the Galaxy and its childish owner though. I also discovered that the key cost no more than 5 euros to replace. Greed is so ugly. The other thing that stood out about our stay at the Galaxy was how poor the breakfast was each morning.
Small and friendly - mmm!
We booked through Thomson, having read reviews, expecting small and friendly - we found a just about the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed in - the owner and his 'year after year cronies' were up until the early hours, every other guests sneeze could be heard, every door, every wardrobe - a nightmare, when preparing the breakfasts we shall never know how a few cups and saucers could clatter and rattle and echo so. The guests were just trying to have a holiday, the hotel magnified every sound, every footsteep - just a total sound bucket. We found the beds to be the hardest we have ever encountered, we don't expect 2* Greek beds to be the softest but even so! The sheets were like sack cloth - stiff as boards - we returned with sore elbows from their roughness - they didn't even fit! The owner, Yannis, we likened to a humourless Fawlty, his wife more amenable, but seemed totally fed up with having guests around and participated little, the daughter was lovely, clearly embarrassed by her father. We had no youngsters with us, but , those that were there weren't allowed to play loudly or or spill water outside the pool! They really weren't doing any harm! just playing and not over the top at all. We had a problem with our window shutter which took 3 days to get repaired, the owner really could not see the problem and became quite obstructive when we tried to explain that without the shutters the room was too light! Even the Thomson rep who was fine and tried hard for us, said that there was no point arguing with him, we would get nowhere! We ended up with a shutter similar to Arkwright's Till in open all hours! No indoor bar. We almost felt like we had to apologise for being on holiday! We felt guilty if we made the simplest request - like accessing our safe box! The breakfasts indescribably inedible, apart from the two days out of 14 we had Greek Yogurt and honey. How any one could describe this hotel as small and friendly I shall never know! The air conditioning was unbelievably expensive - the safe deposit box and the air con together came to 114 Euros!!!!!! The maids were both friendly and willing to exchange a smile, the room was clean, as was the 'bathroom' - except the shower had something that resembled half a broken umbrella as a screen! After 14 days we were incredibly glad to leave! But, we liked the island, very green and with beautiful beaches, you need a car, or use lots of buses, really cheap and reliable. Lots of wasps and mosi's though - you need to be prepared for them for sure. We would like to go back - and stay somewhere friendly, with a comfy bed!
A Let down this year
We went back to the galaxy this year after having a great holiday their in 2006, this time it was a bit of a let down, we arrived and everything looked as it had been the year before, this year we took our son who is 18, the room was tiny for 3 people, in fact you could not really move around at all, also we found a fair bit of old food in the drawers and when we gave this to the owner he said no problem i will put it in the bin????? it became apparent that this year they had only 1 cleaner as last year they had 3. The owners seemed slightly under pressure and not as friendly as last year and the hotel in my opinion had gone down hill rapidly over the 12 months, we will not be returning.
Faulty Towers!! but not funny.....
Just returned from the Galaxy Hotel Thassos, before we went we read all the reports on how clean the hotel was, also how friendly the owners were. What a surprise! First impressions it did not look too bad, then we entered our room! It had not been swept under the beds for about a decade & the bathroom was very tatty with an electric switch inside the shower! This was tricky to avoid! Towels and bedding were changed 4 times in the 2 weeks we stayed there, the new sheets and towels had all seen better days! I have never stayed in a hotel where you have to purchase the air conditioning, 84 euros for 2 weeks! I have only ever purchased this whilst staying in self catering apartments. The owner Yannis was the grumpiest, rudest, old man we have ever met - we were not allowed to drink a cup of the breakfast coffee outside near the pool we had to drink this at the breakfast table, the breakfasts are not the greatest served on a plastic tray not much self service allowed. On one occasion we left our room key in the room! And we were made to feel like we had committed a crime to the extent where the owner was not going to open our door with the master key he just shrugged his shoulders and made us wait!!! I really can not understand why Thomson gives this hotel a gold medal??? Granted only 2 stars but this does not deserve gold medal status in our opinion and this was the opinion of some very nice, other guest staying at the Galaxy at the same time. The only time the owner was polite & friendly was when guests spent money in his bar!! The hotel did not spoil our holiday as we spent very little time there!!!
Fantastic holiday
We stayed at the Galaxy in June last year. We had never been to Thassos before and had heard very little about it! We booked around 6 weeks before and were looking forward to trying somewhere new! The hotel was small but very friendly, Yannis and Poppy were the perfect hosts and you felt as if you were sharing their home with them for a week. The hotel's facilities were basic but very practical. I have got to say that this is the cleanest Greek hotel I have stayed in, you could tell that the owners were proud of their hotel. The other guests there had returned year after year which is a good sign! The biggest problem with this hotel is being able to book at the right price! Thomson have defenitley clicked that this is one of the better hotels in their Thassos portfolio and are reaping the benefits! We would defenitley return to the Galaxy....If we can get in!!
Loved the friendly atmosphere
Around 4 years ago my family and I were undecided about where to visit on holiday. Therefore we booked a 'late deal' through Thompson and ended up in the Galaxy Hotel in Thassos. From the moment of getting on the flight, it was noticeable that a certain type of person visits this resort i.e. families and friends. After departing the plane we were taken to the ferry by coach and it was all highly organised and well executed. Poppy and Yanni, the owners of the hotel met us upon arrival and welcomed us to the Island. A tip for booking accommodation is to not pay for a balcony. This way you will end up on the ground floor and within close walking distance of the pool, which may I add was brilliant. The food provided at the Hotel, and indeed around the island was of the up most quality and I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to sample authentic Greek living. Furthermore, the trips that Thompson run, allow you to visit the places that tourists don't normally get to visit on their own e.g. mystical caves and untouched beaches. Overall I believe the Galaxy is the best hotel on the Island and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Thassos. The Galaxy is where I will be staying this summer, as with the last 4 years. So I might see you there!
