" Completely and Utterly Wonderful "

We'd seen a few negative reviews before we went on holiday and we were a little worried about the warmth of the welcome we would receive when we arrived.
We had no reason to worry at all. George and his lovely family couldn't have been more welcoming and as expected the accomodation and facilities were excellent. It was our 9th trip to Greece and the Marialena Appartments were by far the best accomodation we have stayed at.
From our first meal on arrival (wonderful Moussaka made by George's Wife Maria) to our final morning George and his family did their utmost to make us feel welcome.
We were there with our 13 year old son and the in-laws were also staying in an apartment in the complex.
The apartments were clean, well furnished and comfortable.
The pool area was immaculate with more than enough sun loungers.
The food was freshly cooked by Maria and George's daughter looks after the bar. The weekly BBQ is well worth the price.
George and his family were very welcoming and George is very rightly proud of the apartments, which are nestled in the hillside and well away from the main road.
Shops and Taverna's are a short walk away
Skiathos itself is a lovely island and we would recomend hiring a 4 wheel drive to explore the less developed side of the island. Skiathos town is great for a day out and you can pick up a boat trip from the harbour (much cheaper than with a tour operator). The bus service in Skiathos is excellent as there is only one main road which goes from one end of the island to the other then back again.

Advice: Lovely little village with nice taverna's and beautiful beach.

Activities: Exploring Island, Skiathos Town, Platanias restaurant fantastic

" Best accommodation on the island! "

We have both visited numerous greek islands none of which can compare to skiathos! The Marialena apartments have everything you could possibly want. George the owner was a perfect host. Pleasant, friendly and couldn’t do enough to help. Even buying us a couple of drinks throughout the holiday! The apartments themselves are spotless, cleaned every day and fresh towels every few days. Self catering facilities were also very good. The surrounding views of the village are gorgeous, with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas around the pool. The pleasant walk to the beach takes about 15 minutes, and to the nearest shop about 5 minutes with a number of taverna’s and poolside bars along the way. The standard of food varies from place to place, however we do recommend going to georges bbq at the marialena since it was probably the best meal we had all holiday! The Pegasus was also very nice! The beaches were clean with crystal clear waters and pleasant views. The town was very busy with clubs at one end and quieter local, family run pubs, bars and tavernas at the other, really nice both of a day and night. Overall we had a fantastic holiday, 1 week isn’t long enough! Definatly revisiting the island in the future and hopefully be staying at the marialena village!

Advice: ideally located in the middle of the main road linking one side of the island to the other

Activities: local beaches, skiathos town and marialena bbq

Good for: Beach

" We decided to get married on Skiathos... "

We decided to get married on Skiathos island as we had fallen in love with the island and the locals on all our other holidays there. Marialena seemed exactly what we where looking for as we had twenty other guests coming to see our happy occasion and the apartments looked large with seperate sleeping areas to kitchen and living which is very unusual on the island. Can we just say the accomodation is not our reason for writing this review as that did not dissapoint at all but the owners and family's attitide is.
As mentioned we have visited on many other occasions and never ecountered arrogance and rudeness before, The only time the owner or son spoke to any member of our party was to complain, our son had burnt his shoulders as weather was well into its 40's so we told him to leave his t-shirt on having read the numerous rules regarding the pool, the owners son waited till we was not around to rudely tell him to get out of the pool. another example was on our wedding day our son asked the taxis to drive up to our apartments to collect the bridesmaids and bride and son they did so glady only owner was not happy parked in the exit to complain to the taxi drivers for going to high, they even winded their windows up after angry exchange of words telling him to move, Our wedding co-ordinator Anastasia who was brilliant and again a local suffered the same abuse of this man having drove up to bring us our wedding certificate. The accomodation hardly ever had hot water after complaining to the tour operators we were informed it was because deisel had gone up and he was relying on his solar panels, unacceptable on of our guests was a poorly boy for three days and no hot water. We always thought owners where in the background only noticable if you had a problem not the case here arounc 3pm everyday the owner and family would have a noisy lunch with the two very young sovakian girls he had working for him waiting on them hand and foot. it made all our party feel uncomfortable and we all agreed we felt like we were trespassing in somebodys home, always watched the young girls having to do alot of the complaining apologising while doing so, You cannot take your own water food or drink around the pool, we had black running water on two occasions and others who were staying at the time had the same uncomfortable feeling, A sad time for us as our beatiful island was spoilt by a man and his family who was not even locals to skiathos but from the mainland. We will stick to our favorite resort Koukounaries from now on.

" The Maria Lena is a small. family run... "

The Maria Lena is a small. family run complex of approximately 20 apartments. They are set approximately 1/2 mile from the main road and town of Agia Paraskevi, although this is a pleasant walk past a few restaurants etc. The town has a wonderful sandy beach and regular buses into Skiathos town, the main town on the Island. Buses are good but become very busy - an alternative is a taxi at about £6.

The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings, very peaceful (except the odd cockerel!). For a small complex, it has a lovely pool and kid’s pool, a good sunny deck and plenty of loungers. It has a family run bar, snack bar and restaurant and the food is good, although I would recommend exploring the other local restaurants also.

The owners of the hotel are very friendly and nothing is too much bother (i.e. lifts to airport etc). The apartments are clean and well presented.

I would thoroughly recommend this resort and apartments for those who want a peaceful getaway and are not too worried about the 1/2 stroll into the main area of town. If you can pick up a good deal with Thompsons (approx £225 per week per adult out of season) book with them. If not, contact the hotel directly and book flights independently. The owner George will be happy to arrange transfers from the airport.

" Beautiful! The accommodation was... "

Beautiful! The accommodation was modern, spacious and had everything you need. The staff were so friendly and helpful, we had our 2 yr old son with us and one day needed to go into town so George the owner kindly took us to the bus stop in his car 800m away. May not sound far away but with a hot, crying child in pushchair, hubby with mobility problems and myself pregnant it was!

The pool and childs pool were cleaned daily, with plenty of sunbeds. The apartments are set off from the main road so it is lovely and peaceful with amazing views. There is food at the Marialena should you not want to cook and they will make anything for you should you not fancy something off the main menu (or maybe that was because I was a fussy pregnant women!!!). Simon (barman) and George (owner) were so friendly, kind and welcoming and would do anything to make your holiday complete. My parents go every year and we will definitely be returning.

We highly recommend this holiday to couples or families looking for peace and quiet.

" An excellent holiday, the family are... "

An excellent holiday, the family are very welcoming. The apartment was well equipped. The main bedroom having two single beds and the living room has a sofa bed.

Due to the ages of our children we had to sleep on the sofa bed which was a little uncomfortable, however this was a minor problem.

The food was very good and there is a good selection of restaurants within walking distance. We took advantage of a trip to Athens, organised by Thompson, the trip was a little expensive and rather rushed, there is an hour on the sea cat and a two hour journey by coach to get to Athens.

Generally all the trips organised by Thompson were rather rushed. We would recommend that you hire a car so as to visit one of the many beautiful beaches. The pool area is kept very clean and is generally quiet, there are plenty of sun beds.

" We arrived early May and were the... "

We arrived early May and were the first tourists of the season, the island was deserted and it was heaven. The Marialena Village was brilliant, the apartments were clean and everything was practically brand new with a kitchen that you can actually cook in.

One of the guests in a different apartment even cooked a roast dinner. There are only 2 bad points, the first the food in the apartment restaurant was overpriced and below average. The second is the distance from the main road to the apartment was just too far, 800m. It doesn't sound too far but if you have to walk it 2-4 times a day you will feel it.

The fact that the apartments are so far from the main road does mean that they have a bit of a monopoly on food but make the effort and walk to the Pegasus for dinner at least once, the food was great and so was the price.

Overall the holiday was great, we love the island. Not accessible for the disable but lovely for the young and fit.

" Although the sun never came out until... "

Although the sun never came out until our 3rd day, not their fault, I would not hesitate in returning to or recommending the Marialena Village apartments.

The apartments themselves were very bright and clean as you would expect with a year old property and the large double bed instead of the usual two singles was a pleasant surprise, there was plenty of wardrobe space and the cleaner came in most days, this is not a typical (basic) Greek property.

Simon who worked behind the bar was very friendly and George the owner very helpful, when i needed to go into town to get some medication for a an upset stomach he not only insisted on driving me but personally rang the pharmacist when we arrived and found it was closed and got him to open up the shop, the one small minus point with the apartments was the location as it was a 15 minute walk from the main road and bus stop and although we personally never found it a problem it maybe too much for the less able bodied although there were no hills to climb.

Aghia Paraskevi is halfway along the only bus route on the island so is therefore an ideal base from where to explore the island and the buses are very reliable and run about every 15 minutes during the day and run until around 1AM. We intend to return in the not too distant future and will definitely be returning to the Marialena Village.

" The Maria Lena apartments were a... "

The Maria Lena apartments were a refreshing change. There are only 11 apartments set in beautiful countryside but only 5 minutes drive to the sea. The apartments are owned by one family and they are so friendly. Maria and Lena being the names of George's spouse and daughter.

The accommodation was excellent, clean and all facilities were provided. If you do not wish to cook yourself, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are provided and can be eaten by a very quiet pool and bar.
Have recommended this accommodation to all of our friends.
