Oct 2008, Mr I Bond

My wife and I spent one week at the Soula apartments, on arrival Jimmy started asking how much we paid for holiday and then actually insisted that we take the safe deposit box and air conditioning by . I feel the same as first couple that Jimmy took the huff with us when I refused. Before we left for our holiday I emailed Jimmy to check whether there was a kettle in the room or toaster and he told us that we would have to hire them, so we took our own, and when we got there, there was a toaster and kettle ready to use. I'm afraid I wouldn't go back there because of Jimmy, not like any other Greek man I've ever met, very loud and talks about money all the time. The room was ok for 1 week.

My husband and I have just returned from 2wks at Soula Studio. We did have a lovely holiday and we enjoyed the resort however we found Jimmy the owner to be very loud and often quite rude. Our holiday did not get off to a good start as we were offered the overpriced air con (80 euros per week) which we had not budgeted for and we were actually advised on booking that this was included in the price we payed for the holiday.
I felt that as we declined the air con this created some bad feeling for the remainder of the stay. The apartment was fine - quite basic but clean and in a nice location. However you could often hear the owner shouting at members of his family and the people who worked with him which was quite annoying at times.
My husband and I also overheard a conversation between Jimmy the owner and another customer about his dislike of tour operators and that he often has problems with the people who visit through tour operators, this again made us feel quite uncomfortable and like second class citizens. We were not spoken to in the same manner as the private customers, luckily we visited the beach and explored the island and did not spend any time around the pool - probably for the best!!!

Me and the girlfriend had a fantastic time. The Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the owner was just a pleasure to deal with. We'll be going back next year, which is about as high a reccomendation as I can give. It's a quite place Alykes, for couples looking for a romantic week away it's absolutely perfect. The food is just wonderful and it's such a relaxed atmosphere. I could live there.
Not really suitible for families or those looking for a wild time.

What a fantastic hotel. We went with Thomsons and opted for the Half Board option. Good food and great value. The rooms were very spacious and clean, maid service daily (except Sunday) and linen changed regualrly. The wonderful pool area and grounds were kept spotless by the hard working staff. The receptionists were really friendly and helped us out with their knowledge of the area. There is a good bus service from the front of the hotel if you want to go further afield.
The walk to Kolymbari takes about 45 mins. down the main road, past the church, then right immediately after the bridge for a quiet meander. Or take a walk on quiet roads up through Kato Vouves to Ano Vouves and visit the 3,000 year old? Olive Tree for some great views and a touch of real Crete.
We highly recommend this hotel and will deffinately return before too long.

We went on a family holiday in August 2007 to the Sellini apartments and had the best holiday ever.
We received a warm, friendly welcome from Jimmy and his family that set the tone for a fantastic stay. The accomodation was excellent (bearing in mind the basic standards in Greece). The apartments were cleaned on a daily basis along with the fantastic pool area.
The main heart beat of Alikes is approx 15 minutes away with plenty of tavernas and bars to sit and relax. The whole resort is geared up to cater for the tradtional english family. Definately worth walking to the near Alikanas beach for the shallow waters that are ideal for the kids and a cool breeze to take away the scorching heat.
All in all the best family holiday we have ever had, so much so we have already booked for 2008. If you want the party life then you need to go to Laganas, if not then get yourself a relaxing holiday break at Alikes.

Had a wonderful time at Sellini July/Aug 2007 the apartments are lovely, very clean and staff very friendly and helpful.
Was never overcharged at the pool bar and neither were my two children aged 8 & 6.
Jimmy was always friendly and very helpful. Can't comment on the BBQ as we didn’t partake.
The resort was great plenty of places to eat out all with good food in particular the Piccadilly.
The road train trip was well worth it a very nice way to pass a few hours when you've had enough sun.
Would definitely go back.

Aug 2007, redticktickboom

On a Sunday you can pay 10 euros each for a barbecue and be treated to a pork steak and some salad ready plated. Whilst the steak itself was okay it's not my idea of a barbecue and once they get rid of you, the staff and invited family have the real barbecue to themselves with what looked like a fantastic spread obviously bought from what we had paid for! 25 of us had the barbecue whilst I was there and all of us left disgusted by what we saw.
The shop is stocked with the basics and is open most of the time. Be very careful with your money at the pool bar though as Jimmy and his staff make up the prices and will short change you as soon as look at you.
In order to investigate this we sent our 5 year old daughter to the pool bar for a 3 euro (not cheap either) slushie armed with a 5 euro note. She came back with a 1 euro coin as her change! Bear in mind we did this to test the theory that we were being persistently ripped off.
When my wife complained the girl behind the bar reluctantly returned the missing 1 euro and stated that she must have been mistaken.
I'd go to the resort again but on balance not to Sellini, Theo or Soula studios.

What a fantastic place! Me and my husband had a great week here.
The studio apartments are quite small but have everything you need. Very clean and serviced every day.
The pool area is very nice and immaculately clean, all sunbeds and slabs are hosed down every day! Plenty of sunbeds. Pool bar serves excellent homemade burgers and pizzas that Jimmy makes himself to order. Would definitely recommend them!
Oscars bar is on the apartments premises and is friendly and a good place to relax and end the night. There is a Greek barbecue here once a week which is very good and has Greek dancing for you to join in with!
The only down side is - watch out for the bats flying very low at night round the back of the soula studios when you go to bed!
The resort is a steady 15 minutes walk away with lots of bars and restaurants. Can honestly say we didn't have a bad meal all week, food was excellent in all restaurants and very reasonably priced.
Loved the 'Buca' bar right on the beach, go here to have a cocktail or ice cream sundae and watch the sunset.
Will definitely go back!

Clean, fresh and well kitted out we found these apartments good value for money. Clean pool, plenty of loungers and a nice walk into the main resort (about 15 mins) on the flat (well flatish). Friendly locals, OK some of them would sell their granny if the price was right but hey we all have to make a living.
We would definitely go back again and as long as you don’t expect 5 star luxury and just want a clean, comfortable base for a quiet and relaxing holiday you'll be very happy. Plenty of local eating places , quite reasonable, and we loved the "Buca" beach bar cafe for a nice quiet drink in very pretty surroundings.
PS avoid trips to the shipwreck, that ship didn't hit the rocks for no reason. However apartments value for money and highly recommended.

Me and my family go to Zante every year, Alykes is a lovely place to relax, Sellini studios are very clean and spacious, the pool is very clean too. Alykes is brilliant for small children has the sea is very shallow, jimmy the man that manages the Sellini is really friendly and will help any way he can.
The food in the restaurants is a1, any one that visits Zante will love it you need to get a ride in the local taxis has they are brill (horse & carriage).
If you are wanting English beer try the iris bar it has everything the owner is English and very nice I would recommend Alykes and Sellini studios to anyone, we have a lovely time every year.

The hotel description is very...
8 / 10
Aug 2005, Mr N M Thorpe

The hotel description is very accurate in the Thomson brochure except for the information about the local village, (I hesitate to call it a town) of Kolymbari, because it is split into two parts the first part that is encountered is a 5 way junction with a supermarket and a bank and not much else, the second and real part of Kolymbari is another 800 meters down the road towards the sea, this makes the brochure fact of 1500 metres a half truth as it is 1500 metres to the crossroads but that is not where you would want to be and the road from the hotel to the crossroads is dangerous during the day and a complete no no at night as it narrows with no footpath in places and the added threat of Cretans, coaches and tourist racing by at about 50 miles per hour at least.
If you wish to travel about the local bus service puts the English equivalent to shame as the busses are actually large Mercedes air conditioned coaches that run regularly and very cheaply, for example a bus to Kolymbari is only 2 Euros for a family of four each way, the journey takes 5 minutes and is a damn sight safer than walking, when you have walked down to the harbour area find the narrow street heading for the monastery and look for the restaurants of Argentina and Diktina with Diktina taking the edge, afterwards walk down the side street to the harbour and sit in the bar right by the sea (it’s the only bar there) and you would not need to look any further for the ambience is worth the trip alone.
For an exciting night out get the bus to Platanias, it takes 15 - 20 minutes costs 3-4 Euros for a family of 4, you will be rewarded with a large choice of bustling restaurants and bars with very good food at very good prices and if you stay longer than midnight when the last bus goes back you can get a cab for about 10 - 12 Euros.
The hotel is spotless and peaceful with the attentive kind staff you would expect to find in a family run hotel. The buffet meals are of good quality and quantity if a bit overdone for late arrivals. The Hotel pool is very clean and the surrounding gardens well cared for but beware there is no lifeguard so if you have young kids watch them all the time. The self catering rooms in the Hotel are very good with fridge coffee maker and a two ring electric stove, the maids clean the rooms everyday including washing the floors everyday, the bedding and towels are changed every other day, we had a sea view room which is away from the pool area a bit but have the added bonus of solitude in the evenings with no noise at all reaching this part of the complex.
Now to the beach, Don’t bother would be my advice the rubbish bins were overflowed the sand / shingle beach is as suggested except without the sand, if you have visited Chisel beach on the south coast you will know where I am coming from plus the water was rough added to the steep shelf made for large crashing wave dump rather than a normal slowly building wave make the shoreline a dangerous place to stand.
