The hotel is situated on the harbour front and directly above a very popular bar, which at night seems the centre for the youngsters to meet, add to that the loud music then altogether its obviously a noisy location. This generally ends about 01.00am, your next "wakeup" call is the massive ferry which arrives each morning at approx 0615, having to drop his large anchors to control the ship, meant lots of noise, then obviously the constant stream of heavy traffic to and fro the ferry only increased the situation, it was though a great site to witness each day. As for the rooms they are definitely in need of improvement, the bathrooms in particular, the shower is extremely small and should your waistline be greater than 36 inches, then you could well be in contact with both sides of the shower and the shower curtain all at the same time! Should you not be able to get a room with a view across the harbour, then you are bound to be disappointed, for their balcony's are not ones you can sit on after a long day out to relax, indeed the rooms either side of the hotel, means you only face the walls of the buildings next door and have no floor space, rooms to the rear overlook the back street and again directly onto the building opposite. The pool area is poor as well as is the small sun terrace for those not wishing to venture out, which is quite deceiving in its size from the brochure pictures of the hotel and the jacuzzi did not operate as well as the pool bar which never opened, orders for drinks etc have to be done over the phone to the downstairs bar, of which some never arrived on occasions. Breakfast (0700-1000) was the traditional style, cold meats fresh bread etc and was always well presented and operated by the staff, the breakfast area is located on the same floor as the pool (4th Floor on the lift button), lovely area to start the day, undercover of the overhead vines and greenery. Previous reviews have commented on the staff in a negative sense, particularly the reception area, well I have to say that they were indeed good overall, however one or two clearly got out of the wrong side of the bed throughout our stay! The domestic staff were fantastic and each day we returned to a wonderful fresh clean room. The rooms are fitted with a very old fridges, ice box with no door, safes are in the large wardrobe and are provided free of charge, unlike all the other islands we have visited, there are no kettles, so bring your own! The A/C is very dated, though works, comes on between 1500 and 0700 the following morning only.
As for eating out, the only place I would recommend in Samos Town, is a taverna called "Steps" (Thanks to Chris and Linda for that), we went there on our last night out, and without wishing to be to critical of others, most were indeed poor to say the least in comparison to again many of the other islands.
Another point to note about Samos, for those wishing to rent a motor scooter(50cc and above) on a UK driving licence only, this is infact illegal, you need to have motorcycle licence in order to hire, there are some who will hire, but should you go ahead and fall foul of the authorities then the fines are great, also you have to consider the small print in you travel insurance, should you have an accident and require medical care.
I am afraid I would not recommend this hotel to friends or family, only possibly as a last resort and IF you are able to get a room directly to the front over looking the harbour, out of the main hotels the Samos Hotel looked much the better in Samos town.
Apart from our disappointment, it was an ideal location to get out and about Samos itself and you will need wheels to do so, as the bus service seemed a little hit or miss, for that I would only recommend Nicos Rental who can be found on the web, service was brilliant as was Nicos and Lil and the team. My thanks to them for their part in our holiday

Advice: You need a car.

We stayed here for our honeymoon in May 2007. It was fantastic. The hotel wasn't modern, but it was tasteful and the room was well furnished. The balcony was lovely and a real bonus. The pool area was fab with a very small bar area - the food was tasty and the service fantastic. The view over the sea was great and it was really nice to watch the ferries coming into port.

Samos town was an excellent base as you could easily reach the rest of the island, you could catch a ferry, a taxi or a bus. Out of all of the resorts, I'd recommend Samos town. The restaurants were excellent and gave great value for money our favourite was a little one called Zen on the front alongside the Aeolis Hotel. The mixed dish was the best to share.

I'd also recommend the plaza cafe's in the square. It's worth sitting at night people watching. There's also a great Gyros cafe on the corner of the square - highly recommended.

Best trip was to Patmos = great day out to a fantastic unspoilt island. Go to Turkey but be prepared to be disappointed, Greece is better.
