Enjoyable stay 2nd visit
8 / 10
Aug 2011, Terminated

This is my second visit to this hotel and nothing really has changed. The rooms are basic but clean and serviceable. I really don’t understand why anyone gives this hotel negative comments, if I ever go back to Sorrento I will definitely try to get this hotel again.
Don’t book this hotel if you want in-house entertainment or a pool because there isn’t any. It is 15 minutes bus ride to centre of Sorrento so if you want to be in the city centre don’t book it. This is however is all reflected in the price you pay.
Villa Pina is really a restaurant which happens to own the building across the road which they rent out to guests. The food for half board guests is generally exceptional. It is simple pasta and sea food dishes but they are cooked to very high standards. Even my girlfriend who is a self-confessed foody looked forward to the evening meal each night. You do have the option of using the A la carte menu but I personally never saw the point. The wine can be a little pricey coming in at between 16-20 euros a bottle, and I can’t say the wine was any more than reasonable. You can order the house white (which is not on the menu) for 10 euros which I thought worked well with food but not so good by itself. However, there were a few days when this wine turned up suspiciously without a cork and the wine tasted sulphurous with bubbles floated endlessly to the top. It was clearly not the same wine and other stuff had been poured into the bottle. I complained and was told it was a “young wine” lol, a bit condecending and my reply should have been to let it mature into a proper bottle of wine. After a week of people complaining it started to turn up with a cork in the bottle and miraculously returned to normal. Many said the red was quite good but I never tried it. I also stopped getting the bottle water after a few days (3 euros half litre) because it always turned up without the top so I assumed they filled it with tap water in the back room. I ordered a free jug of tap water from then on and it was fine. I always had a few bottles of wine in the fridge in the room and usually took one up to the balcony above the restaurant after the meal to relax and enjoy the views. I think people would have eaten lunch here more and even drank more if they had kept their prices reasonable for guests but 6 euros for a beer is just ridiculous when you can buy them from the shop at 1.20 euro and take them up to the balcony. A tomato and cheese salad would cost around 10 euro to give you an idea of food prices.
The restaurant has fantastic views overlooking Capri, Vesuvious and the bay of Naples and it makes for a really enjoyable dining experience. The restaurant is highly rated in the local area and is used by the local populous. You simply can’t compare this with the run of the mill hotel restaurant and it is the main strength of the Villa Pina. You are expected to eat between 7-8pm so that the area is cleared for paying guests around 9pm, which I think is fair enough. Yes they make more of a fuss of the paying guests but I have no issues with this as the restaurant is the main money maker. The staff are always polite and friendly and give good service.
There were one or two issues which is worth mentioning. The first day I informed management the fridge did not work and it took 5 days to sort it out (every day I seen him he was ‘tomorrow’ it will be fixed). Also on the first day the plug in the bath would not lift up so the water could not be drained. They came the next day and removed the plug altogether which fixed the problem but also meant you could no longer have bath. Although there was a shower head fixed to the bath there was no curtain so I had to sit in the bath holding the shower over me. I got the impression if we did not call in every day to request a new plug or fridge they would have quite happily left it that way. The customer service side is very slow and gives the impression they don’t really care, which is a shame because I really love this hotel. This place has a special charm which I will always appreciate. At the price it is worth it's money.

Top Tip: If you are planning to visit Pompey, Herculenium and Napoli call into the shop at the bus station and get an Art card for 29 euro. It allows unlimited travel and entry into the main attraction over three consecutive days. You can buy it in advance and you activate it by writing the start date on the back. Many were paying 50 euroes to get to Pompey via the Thompson rep and it didn’t even include entry into the attraction. You can access all major points by via the rail service (located in Sorrento central bus station) very easily. Traveling around is easy as they have a good bus network however they have an unfair charging system. Tourists pay 2.20E for a bus ticket (they do not accept money on the bus) to travel anywhere for 45 mins, but there is another ticket costing 1.20E that allows 1 hour travel, however they are reluctant to sell them to tourists. Some places will but most wont, they seem to reserve them for the locals, which I would assume goes against EU laws regarding unfair trading or discrimination. The hotel sells the 2.20E in the restaurant area.

It has a special charm

Jun 2011, Mac

This is a traditional Italian hotel situated on a busy road between the village of Massalubrense and Sorrento. It is set amongst lemon and olive groves on a beautiful hill overlooking the bay of Naples and the Island of Capri.

This has been a venue that has allowed us enjoy a restful and charming holiday away from the busy and more populated Sorrento. The location of this hotel is ideal if you want time alone, to rest, walk amongst the lemon and olive groves, enjoy magical sights of the bay of Naples and the coast line. There are numerous walkways and a map of these can be obtained.
Parts of this hotel may well be a bit dated but it has a winsome charm. This was a half board package and the breakfast although simple was more than adequate with evening meals excellent and served by a very competent, professional staff. The food was varied and of a high standard - beautiful! Compliments to the kitchen staff!
Would return? Absolutely!

We had a fantastic Holiday!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks early August, after reading the previous reviews we were worried. When we arrived we were taken to our room (ice cold – fantastic air con!), we opened the window to find a view of Capri – absolutely beautiful! The rooms are over the road from the Restaurant, it is quite busy but not really a problem – most evenings there is a chap parking cars for guests arriving and he usually lets you know if there is a car coming round the corner.
The food at the restaurant is the best I have ever eaten in Italy and I have been many times. It has a view of Capri to the left and Vesuvius to the right, fantastic sunsets too. You are given a choice of 3 starters and mains – this is very varied and delicious. The puddings arrive on a trolley with 6 levels – heaven for pudding lovers! The waiters are really friendly as are the owners. Above the restaurant is a roof terrace with fantastic views – we spent many an evening with wine up there.
The hotel is just outside Sorrento but directly on a bus route with regular buses (you buy tickets from the restaurant). I think that there is a lot to be said for staying in a hotel outside the resort, the hotels we saw in Sorrento looked quite touristy. The rooms are not exactly ultra modern but they are very clean and linen and towels changed every day, they are furnished with antique furniture.
We spent many days on the beach of Massa Lubrense, a steep walk down the cliff but worth it - really beautiful beach with views of Capri and Vesuvious. 12 euros for 2 sunbeds and a parasol each day but worth it.
We saved a lot of money by not booking excursions through the travel company, it is much easier to get a train to Pompeii for example and hire a guide if you need one. On average we paid half what an excursion cost – which makes a difference! You can pay 6 Euros for a 24hour bus ticket and go all along the Almalfi coast and stop off where you want and then hop on again.
We had a fantastic holiday and loved the hotel, we are definatley going back and would not stay anywhere else. I honestly could not fault it on anything - a truly traditional italian experience.

  • Advice: The city itself is quite touristy, head to neighboring villages for a more traditional experience
  • Activities: Eat at Ristorante Antico Francischiello, Massa Lubrense. Visit Positano!!

Jun 2008, Mr C Simons

I have stayed in all classes of hotels all over the world and this is a first, no toast available at breakfast! The breakfast buffet is pretty poor just cakes, bread and coffee. The website is also not too accurate showing access to the sea and a grassed area with sunbeds, it is there but nowhere near the hotel, a good 25 minute walk down a steep path. On the plus side the views from the hotels sun terrace are spectacular. One more thing to bear in mind is the location it is a bus ride (20 mins) into Sorrento, or an expensive taxi ride.

First impressions of the hotel is a...

May 2008, Mrs R E Grant

First impressions of the hotel is a bit dated, but after a while you appreciate that it has been preserved in a particular style. If you like a comfortable and homely feel, rather than cold, clean lines and ultra modern, then you would definately like the Villa Pina.
The menu on offer is out of this world and the service by the professional staff are to be commended.
After chatting to the staff all week I found them to be friendly, warm and kind. Nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel is situated in Massa Lubrense, and you do need to get a bus to Sorrento, but again once to get the hang of how to get about it is pretty easy. The Italians idea of a time table is a bit of a joke, but no one I met was too bothered about it, as you came to expect it in the end.
I really loved Sorrento. Amalfi and Revello are a must to visit. Capri is a glorified shopping centre and a waste of time (in my opinion). Try the drains (or lanes) in Sorrento for some bargains and great coffee.

Had a wonderful holiday and cannot wait to return. Clean linen every day, good local food, friendly staff and owners made it feel like a home from home. Not much to do locally but wonderfully situated with bus stop outside hotel. And there is always car hire to get around further (and faster). Definitely not suited to small children due to the hotel being right on the main coastal road. But that was the initial attraction for me - a very peaceful holiday.

My daughter and I spent a lovely week at Villa Pina. We were on the top floor with a skylight rather than a window, but didn't mind at all. The room was lovely and clean and the view was marvellous from the skylight!
The breakfast buffet and evening meals were delicious with sufficient choice. The staff were friendly, although a bit stressed sometimes because the restaurant gets so busy.
The location was good for us, as we didn't want to be in the middle of town, and it was well served by public transport, although nightlife wasn't really an option as the last bus back was 11 pm - but we were usually too tired after a busy day's sightseeing.
It is an ideal place to stay for those who want somewhere out of town, traditional, with a family atmosphere, but well located to visit places of interest by public transport. Pompei was the highlight for me and reached by bus to Sorrento then train, which stops outside the entrance.

May 2007, Mrs L Cutler

We have just come back from a week's holiday at the Villa Pina. I would recommend it to anyone. We had a wonderful week with them.
Our Room was over the restaurant, with a balcony and a view of Capri - bliss - the room was adequate, very clean, maid service every day, and clean towels every day, we had a shower (some rooms have a bath I think) loo, and hand basin, nice big mirror with lighting to do make up.
The Restaurant is fantastic, food to die for! The staff are all lovely, and the owners (Mama and her son) they cannot do enough for you.
If we have one criticism, that would be there is no pool, and as the weather was hot, we would have appreciated a pool to cool off in, you can use the pool of a nearby hotel, about 10 mins walk, but we didn't bother, too lazy to walk there and back!!
Trips:- must do's (1) The Amalfi Drive - wonderful and (2) Rome in a day - not to be missed, although Rome overnight would have given us more time.
Lovely Holiday.

This is a traditional Italian hotel...
8 / 10
Mar 2007, Mrs JM Gunn

This is a traditional Italian hotel situated on a very busy road between the village of Massalubrense and Sorrento. It is set amongst lemon and olive groves on a beautiful hill overlooking the bay of Naples and the Island of Capri.
There is a nearby beach down a very steep hill with cafes and bars. The beach is black lava sand and beautifully clean. Transport into Sorrento is cheap and regular by local bus which stops directly outside the hotel. The bedrooms are adequately furnished in traditional Italian style, and are kept very clean.
The rooms are air-conditioned. Some are situated in the hotel itself, some at the front which could be noisy as it was on the main road. Others were situated at the back and faced onto a small sun terrace. There were also a number of bedrooms over the hotels restaurant, which is located over the road.
These rooms had a view of the Bay of Naples and Capri and on top of these was a large sun terrace with sun beds and parasols available for all residents free of charge. There is no swimming pool.
The restaurant is renowned in Italian for its superb food. It is very clean and the waiters are extremely helpful and friendly. The restaurant is also open to non-residents and because of this residents had to eat earlier in the evening.
The town of Sorrento is within walking distance probably about 45mins, but because of the busy road it can be a bit precarious at times. Massalubrense is about 30 minutes away by foot but again the road is a bit dangerous at times.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone with a disability or walking difficulties because of its location unless you have a car. However, it is one of the best value for money hotels I have stayed in and would definitely go back there again myself. My only criticism of the hotel is that I had a room overlooking the road and it could be very noisy but on the other hand if I had had one over the restaurant, it would have been very tranquil with a beautiful view.

I would not recommend the Villa Pina...

Oct 2006, Mrs GE Hunt

I would not recommend the Villa Pina to anyone. This 'hotel' has more of a sixties YHA feel to it. The facilities are basic with furniture dropping to bits and smelly bathrooms. The place is clean but not modern or even in the slightest bit luxurious. There is no pool and not every room has a balcony.
The food in the restaurant (which is across a busy main road) is delicious but I recommend you upgrade to the a la carte menu as other choices are very limiting. The staff in the restaurant treat hotel guests as 2nd class citizens and are more accommodating to the paying Americans who come to dine where Pavarotti did.
If you like basic and are out everyday and you have thick skin where attitude does not bother you then the Villa Pina may be for you.

Having just returned from 2 weeks at...
7 / 10
Aug 2006, A Holland

Having just returned from 2 weeks at the Villa Pina with my daughter, I felt I had to write something with regards to the facilities here. I would not classify this as a hotel, more of a bed and breakfast establishment with a restaurant attached.
On booking we were told there was a pool "across the road", this turned out to be a 10 minute walk along a very hazardous main Amalfi coast road with no pavement (with Italian drivers!) with a cost of 10 euros per person each visit!
The pool was actually in another hotel. Needless to say we only did this once. However, the room was clean and fresh and the towels changed every day, the staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant lived up to its reputation, food excellent and views from restaurant of Capri and Ischia stunning.
Not much going on in the evening, if you wanted any night life this entailed a bus trip into Sorrento (buses not very reliable!). There was no defined reception or lounge areas, sometimes felt we were intruding into the family home. Having said all that, we had a very enjoyable holiday.
