Having read previous reviews of this hotel, I went with an open mind and no great expectations. Happily, my fears about tired rooms and poor food were unfounded, as the room allocated was a studio with much better facilities than I had expected, and there was a new... more

When we arived at this hotel we were quite hopeful we had an apartment instead of a room on the top floor so we had a lovely big balcony. When we went down to breakfast, there was no fruit, no yogurt and the English breakfast left a lot to be desired. The toaster kept... more

We were persuaded, in March 2009, to purchase 6 weeks to be taken over the next 3 years. We booked to take two in March this year (28 Feb to 13 March). The one bed appartment was adequately sized for 2 people, although supposedly capable of housing 4. As someone else has... more

We had a week at this hotel as part of a promotion package, for Porto Azzrro Resort Club, it cost us £59 B&B each for the week. The breakfast was acceptable and set meals in the evening (at a special rate)were reasonable apart from being served on cold plates. The beds... more

If you can find an alternative/affordable place to stay - do!
Thought we had actually booked a room in the hotel but ended up in the Porta del sol Apartments next to the hotel. We either got a very basic room or they are all the same - not sure. incredibly noisy (don't mind average noise) but this could be fairly unbearable due to what seemed like constant construction traffic all the way through the day and night - there appears to be a lot of construction taking place on the Island. Stayed for 7 nights and did not have a change of bedding or towels. Staff came the night before we left at 10.00pm to change the sheets but this was actually a mistake and he changed his mind! It wasn't expensive but if you had paid more or been expecting what was advertised on the website forget it! Some appliances didn't work in the room and there was no microwave as advertised. The buffet breakfast looks like its been left all week and just topped up. Saying all this if you can bear the traffic at night and pay a very cheapo rate then maybe you could bear it. There is also a significant presence in terms of Time Share sales people in the lobby of this hotel but they were in no way overbearing. All in all Malta can be a lovely and very easy place to be and definitely worth a visit. I will be going back.
Perfectly acceptable
Not the fanciest hotel, and not too much to do in the immediate surroundings, however you get excellent value for your money at this hotel. The hotel includes a gym, indoor pool, sauna, jaccuzzi, mini-market, internet, swank outdoor pool, restaurant/bar, etc... The bus runs fairly regularly, and it can take you to either the Gozo Ferry one way, or Buggebba/Mosta/Valetta the other way. There are a few restaurants in the nieghbourhood, but they seem to be of the slightly more fancy dress variety. There is a fresh fruit stand a short walk away where you can buy some cheap fruit. We stayed in a self-catered room, so the fruits came in handy for breakfast. There is an old Roman road in the hills behind the hotel that can make for a nice day out. Conversely you have St. Paul's Bay right in front of the hotel. Not much to do there, but it is a nice walk. Apparently they will be putting in an artificial beach somewhere along there. It's fine. No complaints.
Good cheap hotel, in a quiet area
Stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2007. On the upside, the staff were helpful and friendly. Even though we arrived after the restaurant had closed, they found someone to cook a good meal for us. The rooms were simple but comfortable and had a nice view of either the bay or the pool area. Indoor pool and jacuzzi etc were good (and needed) as the weather wasn't great and there wasn't much hot water in the rooms to have an early evening bath.. The hotel location is a quiet street just off the main road that sweeps around the bay. It is about 1½ from Bugibba with its vibrant nightlife, but there a several very good restaurants within easy walking distance. Recommended are the Zues Greek taverna and the Rendevous which serves local dishes. The downsides to the hotel are it is looking a bit unloved in some areas, the bar is mainly locals and quite noisy, the breakfast was a buffet and poorly cooked. It seemed everything had been cooked in a deep fat fryer, including the eggs. They need to look at the breakfast as it lets down the rest of the hotel. Overall we had a good break and used the time to tour the island. One area neglected in the official tourist brochures is the 'Three Cities' district of the main town Valleta. This area used to be the docks, but is undergoing a largescale upgrade to provide boulevard cafes, superb views, and wonderful history. It is an area not to be missed.
where are the busses
stayed at the PORTO AZZURRO st pauls bay in early may. the hotel was clean overall, the beds were like sleeping on a log it was a pleasure to get up. a section of the hotel was used for timeshare ,and were always around the pool where they had a office. the worst thing the busses finished at approx 8pm to st pauls which left you feeling isolated ,if you wanted a evening out. the places to eat is a little cafe called SAMMIES near the hotel and the greek restaurant, also close the food spot on .buggiba is too far to walk both ways (tried it only once)
ITS OK IN MALTA
well just got back from malta i stayed there the last week in aug and first week in sept 2006. When we arrived at 3.30am after a long day we found a que of about 25 people and only one hotel receptionists. any way after that we got our room 616 on the top floor, the room was clean, a nice but very basic outlay, 2 hobs for cooking on, a microwave, a fridge and a bath and shower combo. The only downside was that there was no balconay, we did have a nice view though of st pauls bay. The pool is really good, due to the heat the pool was a god send as its nice and cold. The pool bar is really cheap to buy drinks from, and the sunbathing facilities are really nice, always clean. Malta itself is much like the hotel nice and clean but nothing breath-taking.
Very friendly staff
The Porto Azzurro is situated on a small but quite steep hill in a very quiet area overlooking St Paul's Bay. I'm VERY unfit but I had no problems climbing the hill even thought the temperature was 28 degrees plus for the week we were there. It has a bus stop at the bottom of the hill giving access all over the island for pennies. The very beautiful Mellieha Beach is about a 10/15 minute bus ride away if you want sand. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. We were allowed to change rooms without any fuss ( our original room was lovely but on a high floor and we have a small child). Our daughter was treated amazingly well by the staff, the chef cooked her a plate of pasta with tomato sauce when he overheard her saying that she liked the "red spaghetti" that had been served the previous day. All in all I would say that the Porto Azzurro is great if you want a quiet and peaceful holiday. Bugibba and Qawra are only a few minutes away on the bus if you do want more in the way of nightlife.
very quiet area
when we arrived at the hotel we found reception welcoming after explaining to us the way to room which was down a flight of stairs along corridor past restaurant past gym and indoor pool to lift then up to 5th floor. when we got to the room after getting lost and going back to reception we found that the curtains and net curtains were on the bed and the curtain poles on the floor so i informed reception and they said they would be fixed tomorrow the next morning had a word with reception again, after going out we returned in the afternoon to find room had been cleaned but curtains still not up, then the housekeeper came to room and told us they would be put up tomorrow so we desided to hang them ourselves also we found out other rooms were the same, also one of the beds the springs had gone nothing was done about it. as my wife and i both work in a hotel we found this unexceptable and if this happened where we worked the room would be put off untill it was fixed. we stayed half board the food was ok but repetative the breakfasts were the same everyday sausage, beans and tomato except 1 day it was scrambled egg the next was boiled egg evening meals was buffet with soup, salads, meat, fish and potato's with same gateux and fruit salad, if you wanted something different they had a menu but you had to pay for this. the indoor pool was open but a little on the small side gym equipment had seen better days the tv room was permently locked the outside pool was ok but not warm enough to use. the night entertainment is non exsistant saturday/ sunday only in there small bar sunday nights band was heavy metal which was so loud you couldn't here yourself think. if you go out of the hotel there is nothing in the local area so you have to catch a bus to st. pauls bay or buggiba but watch out buses stop leaving buggiba at 6.30 unless you go out of town to catch it, taxi fare back is 4ml (about£7.40 ish). we cant see why thompsons use this hotel with its poor location as there is nothing to dothere
Worth Every Penny
I have just returned from a two week stay at this complex. Situated in a very nice location enjoying magnificent views, the location is just outside the main tourist resort of Bugibba.. therefore whilst away from all the mayhem, near enough to whatever one wants to do during his stay. The main beaches of Golden Bay and Mellieha Bay are only 3km away.. but I have to say that the outside pool and lido are very good. The reception was (from what I gathered) completely re-done during the winter months and so was the main bar and the terrace bar / restaurant. We (myself, partner and son) booked directly with the hotel and I have to say that we are already sorting our next holiday there for next year. Entertainment was good, especially on Sundays with Malta's top talent featured there; whilst football on the big screen was another plus. Food was decent although sometimes service was a bit slow; drinks prices quite cheap and compared well with the bars / restaurants in the area. Our room on the 6th floor was clean, and everything was in good working order.. satellite tv; kitchenette etc etc. I have to say a very deserved keep it up boys to my friends in Malta.. we will be back.
not happy at all
we have just returned from the porto azzurro in Malta and have to say it was a great dissapiontment. Having been to Malta before & staying in Buggibba we were hoping that a return was to be as pleasant. Not so, the reception was fair but the route to the room was ridiculous, (3 corridors & 2 lifts). The room although well sized was shabby & not very clean, the bathroom was poor, balcony had cigarette ends left on floor from previous guest, bed cover ripped & generally unkempt. Dining room was yet again through a series of corridors to the basement which was very dark & dingy. The food was very poor in choice & quality, which having paid half board was expected to be better & after trying two evening meals decided to eat elsewhere. Travel agent described indoor & outdoor pool, jacuzzi, gym & sauna. The outdoor pool was ok but bar food poor, the indoor facilities were occupied by builders & could not be used. The gym was there but equipment not at all maintanied to standard. Only good points were clean towels every day & good hotel shop,(a saving grace). In our opinion not a good choice !!!
Value for Money?
A hotel that looked good from the glossy pictures, promised much but failed to deliver in many areas. The first bone of contention was the reception. Ok, so we arrived at 3:30am, but this was arranged two weeks prior and the hotel advertised a 24hr reception. Tired and thirsty, all we wanted was a glass of water, only to be told 'No water, shop closed, wait until morning...'. The thing about a hotel, is that you expect to be looked after, especially when you pay good money and this worked out at £60 per night for the two of us, breakfast, included. The bath was cleaned once (day 10) in our 13 night stay, we continually asked for soap and toilet paper (we ran out and had to beg the maid for more) and the sheets and towels were changed only every 4 days. Emptying the bin should, at least, be a minimum requirement - perhaps that is why the cockroaches were attracted!! The maids seemed resentful that they were required to do anything other than moan about the hotel guests. On top of all this, the indoor pool and jacuzzi were both out of action for the whole duration of our stay ( no wonder we received a 7:30am phone call from reception on day 2 to settle our bill in full!! ). All in all, and considering this hotel's distance from any amenities, this was the most expensive and disappointing holiday (£1300) we have experienced. We could not wait to come home.....
