" Better than described in the brochure! "

When we arrived at the resort, It was immediately clear that it is a 5 star hotel. Everywhere was spotless, the grounds are beautiful, the lawns and foliage are well-maintained, and the majority of the staff are friendly and welcoming.
Unfortunately the only let down to our stay was that one of the waiters was rude to us, I don't believe it to be intentional but his mannerisms were patronising, and it put me and my mother off our food on a number of occasions.
However, the rest of the staff are excellent, and carry themselves well, as if they're proud to be working there.
The Mirage/Portofino restaurant is okay, the food is Egyptian and not influenced much by Western cuisine which is good. They do a fantastic vegetable tajin. The entertainment on offer was typically Egyptian also, which was nice to see.
I can safely say that the resort is better looking when it's infront of you than in the brochure. It's magnificent, and a real joy to lay by the pool and surrounding lagoons.
It does say in the brochure that there are a number of man-made lagoons, and in comparison to the pool, they're rather large; Don't be put off by this, the pool is of an adequate size. There were a few people staying at the resort who we overheard complaining about not being able to swim in the lagoons, but it clearly states it online and in the brochure. Also, they're salt water - so just go in the sea, which is literally a 30 second walk from the pool.
The tour operators do offer trips and excursions, to the right of the hotel shop, but it's probably better for you if you take walk or taxi to nearby Masbat - a hippy town, full of restaurants, jewellery shops and tour guides.
We found a tour guide who we booked all 4 of our excursions with, the prices are very reasonable, and after booking the first, he gave us discounts on the other 3.
There are many excursions available: Petra (Jordan), Pyramids (Cairo), St.Catherine's Monastery and Mt.Sinai, Blue Hole, Three Pools and the list goes on.
Note that if you want to visit Jordan AND Cairo, your visa will be invalid after visiting only one of these so you will have to buy another to visit the next; Even though Cairo is still in Egypt - It is not in the Sinai region.
Be warey if your a woman on your own, the men won't try and kidnap you or anything, but they can be very pushy and sometimes intimidating. If they want you go into they're shop, you'll know about it!
The water in the hotel is very expensive, a con to be honest. It will cost you 6 times as much for a large bottle of water in the hotel, than in the nearby village market.
It is well worth the 10-15 minute walk in the sun, considering you are supposed to drink 3 large bottles of water a day in the Egyptian sun! The hotel must make a lot of money from selling water, don't fall for it! We bought 6 bottles at once one time, for the same price as one bottle from the Hilton!
Despite the majority of the staff being friendly and welcoming, the reception staff are rude and unwelcoming! They do not smile, do not look enthused, and do not look like they want your custom. Try and avoid talking to them if at all possible, as you will only feel less of a person afterwards!
There is a spa at the hotel called the Swan Spa. Be warned that if you are relaxing by the pool, you are a prime target for the spa staff. They will hunt you down and pester you until you have your hair braided. Put some music on and shut your eyes, this will usually deter them, however this did not work in my mothers case, they tickled her feet until she had to "wake up" and tell them she wasn't interested.
There are lots of sports activities on offer, windsurfing, kitesurfing etc. There is a bay next to the beach where you can do this, which is beautiful. The sports hut on the beach offers a glass-bottom boat trip, for us it was very disappointing and in hindsight we wish we hadn't wasted our money on it.
Despite the negatives written here, the positives outway them by far, and simply being in the resort is a joy. The landscapes are incredible and it really is baron, as if you're on the Moon or Mars.
I would definitely recommend the Hilton Dahab, and would love to visit it again if I could find the time and money!

Advice: Incredibly laid back and relaxed atmosphere

Activities: Funny Mummy restaurant in Masbat, and Petra in Jordan

Good for: Beach

" Better than described in the brochure! "

The first thing to comment on must be the weather, it is amazing!
We arrived at 9pm and it was 34 degrees celsius!
It hasn't rained in Dahab for over 2 and a half years, and you can tell!
The grounds of the Hilton are incredibly clean, and the architecture reflects Egypt; It is not a block like most hotels, instead there are Nubian style apartments that are clean, spacious, and the beds are very comfortable unlike most hotels.
I can catagorically say that Dahab has been my favourite holiday. The people are very welcoming, the landscapes are incredible - as if you're on Mars or the Moon.
There are ample trips to go on, such as Petra, St.Catherine's Monastery, Blue Hole snorkeling etc. There are a lot of tour guides in Masbat, and they all offer good prices - better than hotel prices, so keep a sharp eye for those. Some guides are not as responsible as others, and I found that when i booked with one, he wasn't even awake when we were supposed to go on the excursion so we went to a different guide and his service was excellent, so we chose him every time. His hospitality, prices and English are very good and he invited us for Bedouin tea which was lovely.
The Mirage restaurant food is okay, nothing special, but we didn't get poisoned or feel sick because of it. The puddings echo those in the Maldives, bizarre mousse concoctions, however, Mirage does do a very nice chocolate ball!
There was one waiter when we were there who was very intimidating, he made us feel unimportant, and behaved like he couldn't bare to be working there. Even if he doesn't want to be there, us customers don't pay a huge amount of money to feel resented.
However, this is the only resort I've ever been to where the grounds look better than in the brochure! Both me and my mother never wanted to leave, even after climbing up Mt.Sinai with our aching limbs. Dahab really is a magical place.
Despite this..
DO NOT buy water from the hotel!
It costs LE 13.20 for a large bottle of water in the hotel, which includes tax, but is still a complete con!
If you walk outside the resort and turn left, follow the road, you'll go in a sort of semi-circle and reach a town. That'll take about 10 minutes or so. There is a government funded market where you can buy cheap water; There is another market a little nearer the hotel which we only found by exploration on the way back, where the water is LE 2 for a large bottle of water. Make sure to stock up on water from one of those shops, you won't want to walk in the hot midday sun to get it everyday!
The shopkeepers in Masbat are friendly enough, just be careful if you're a woman on you're own, they won't try and kidnap you or anything, but every man will talk to you - at first it's quite nice, you feel quite flattered, but after a couple of days, you don't want to know. They're very insistant, if you don't go in their shop, expect them to remember and the next day when you walk past they'll query why you didn't visit.
Me and my mum often heard "For you, I would kill my wife", and "You dropped something... It was my heart". Too sickly for words.
Masbat has a lovely restaurant called the Funny Mummy, there are lots of cats there that try to eat your food, but it's just adorable so you can't help but laugh and give them half of your meal. At one time we had 10 cats around us, they pulled all my pizza on the floor and ate half of my mums pasta but in all fairness, we did offer it to them literally on a plate in the first place.
I would definitely recommend the Hilton Dahab to anyone, especially honeymoon-ers, as the luxury is one in a million.

Advice: It has a very relaxed atmosphere, it is the ultimate paradise

Activities: Petra - Jordan, Quadbiking, climbing Mt.Sinai, St.Catherines Monastery

" We stayed at the Hilton Dahab for two... "

We stayed at the Hilton Dahab for two weeks, in July 2005. It was our honeymoon, and we were hoping for a luxurious and exotic holiday. We were not disappointed!!

The hotel is set on a private beach, 2 km from Dahab itself. The beach was sandy, with plenty of loungers and shades. The beach was large enough to ensure enough loungers for everyone, and to ensure a level of privacy. The sea was warm, and the snorkelling was fantastic! There were excursions to a number of coral reefs, available at reasonable prices, on the hotel beach. Amazing coral, and fish- spectacular!

The hotel was beautifully landscaped, and the rooms were large and clean, all with a private terrace or balcony.

the breakfasts were included in the price of the holiday. There was plenty of food to chose from, along with juices and hot drinks. The food available at lunch time was fine- basic snack bar sandwiches etc. The food at dinner however was very disappointing. The fish served was straight out of the freezer, and actually gave my husband and I severe food poisoning! The buffet food was bland, and lacked any Egyptian specialities. We went to Dahab most evenings. £1 in a taxi each way. The restaurants there were fantastic, plenty of fresh fish, tasty Egyptian specialities, all at great value (3 courses, 2 people, £10!).

Overall I would thoroughly recommend Dahab for anyone who is after a relaxing holiday, and prefers a more authentic Egyptian experience than Sharm can offer. My husband and I are going back to Dahab in March, but are staying at a hotel close to the Hilton.

" This Hotel is fantastic. The staff... "

This Hotel is fantastic. The staff are so friendly, we could not get over how helpful everyone was, they just could not do enough for us. They made our stay very special and treated us like old friends.

Dahab is a very friendly place in general, loads to see, even if you are not a diver. We went Jeep Safaring to the coloured Canyon which is a must. Quad biking in between the mountains to an Oasis, with a brilliant guide. Camel riding with the Bedwins. The snorkelling at the 3 pools is great too. And we still had time to lounge around on the beautiful beach, with waiter service. It couldn't get much better. It is well worth the money and very cheap when your there. It was the best holiday we have ever been on and we plan to return next year.

There is bay about 5 minutes walk from the Hotels private beach that is ideal for kite surfing and windsurfing. It isn't very windy at the resort unless you go round the corner into the bay so it means that the sunbathers, like myself can enjoy the sun without being blown to bits, while the more active people are enjoying the wind round the corner !! Perfect. The food was excellent, with a different theme each night.

The entertainment is excellent, with traditional dancing. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Even the housekeeper would come and check that we were enjoying our stay and that the room was to our satisfaction !! Now that’s service. If you only get 1 holiday a year like myself then you have to have it at the Hilton Dahab.
