Appalling Customer Care
3 / 10
May 2010, sunny

On checking in there was obviouly a glitch in that the pre-payment had not appeared in hotel system. I had credit card statement, email confirmation etc but hotel management insistead that my credit card company be called from the public reception and their attitude was very much that I was trying to "pull a fast one". 24hrs later the hotel found the money but refused to apologise. Customer Care was appalling, Management were off hand and rude when I complained, all in all a very embarassing and humilating experience. I appreciate things go wrong but.... I would not recommend Barcelo Hotels or the Old Ship in particular, life is too short and no one needs the headache!

Booked for 3 nights stayed for 1 and that was one night too long

Mar 2010, regular traveller

We booked for along weekend in a premium double room. Having booked a champagne and chocolate surprise I was shocked when it wasnt in the room on our arrival and failed to materialise subsequently. The room was not premium in any respect. The carpet was ripped, the double glazed windows were of such a poor quality that you could hear people outside in the street and feel the wind blowing. The light in the lobby didnt work and the centre light in the room gave very little light. The fire alarm went off four times in the night, there was continual noise until 5am and we had no more than two hours sleep. After speaking to the duty manager in the morning we checked out and returned home.

This hotel boasts that it's the oldest in Brighton but quite frankly it was a huge disappointment. The room was pretty standard and there were bits of wall paper hanging off the walls and due to the curtain half hanging off the rail, failed to mask the view of the rubbish skip outside.
We were also woken early by a loud buzzing noise which continued intermittently the whole morning.
When we got back from our evening out, the hotel had a party going on and a bouncer on the door - so we had to prove we were staying in the hotel otherwise we couldn't get back in!
Finally breakfast - the food was ok but considering the cost it was a real shame that the size of the plates were so small you could only have measly portions - I've had a lot better in a B&B.
I really would not recommend staying in this hotel - it certainly does not offer value for money.

We were very excited about staying at the Old Ship Hotel but what a disappointment it was and really not one I would recommend.
The hotel itself is in a good location opposite the sea and near to the town but the bedrooms are small and ridiculously hot, there is no air conditioning and the ceiling fan really isn't sufficient enough to cool the room down.
Also for a hotel in its location, it doesn't have any form of sound proofing on the windows and we were kept up till 4am with partygoers outside, swearing and shouting and then woken again at 7am by dustcarts.
Overall we managed approx 3 hours sleep which totally ruined our weekend.
We thought we would treat ourselves to breakfast in bed but when it arrived the waiter demanded we pay the extra £4 there and then, which we didn't have on us so was threatened to have the food taken away, when we finally got to eat, it was cold and revolting.
We asked to speak to a manager next morning and told one wasn't available and had to write instead, which we did, to no avail, we were told conservation laws restrict sound proofing the windows!! (I'm sure a little imagination could have got round this.)
Apparently they are aware of the heating problem but could do nothing to help us.
There really are far better hotels in that price bracket, don't touch The Old Ship.

I went here in January for a little break as the winter blues are nasty.
well the hotel was great lovely rooms the staff were lovely very helpful. Brighton is a lovely place, the beaches are crystal blue the whole place was lovely.
there’s loads to do even in winter. I got to say it was just what I needed, a little break away from the hustle and bustle of all our city’s I’d recommend this hotel for anyone its 10 outta 10 all round

We were a bit apprehensive about the Ship hotel after reading some of the reviews online.
Checking in was easy and the staff were very friendly and helpful offering to look after our luggage until our room was ready. We had a drink at the bar and some food. Again the service was excellent as was the food.
The room was excellent with a large bathroom with complimentary toiletries, and a lovely shower and large bath!
The bed was very comfortable and there was a full size TV with remote control.
Breakfast was a real treat. A large well stocked help yourself buffet feast which once eaten was enough to keep you going all day!
The hotel is close to all the tourist attractions, being in the town centre and an easy walk to all amenities.
The only downside, and nothing to do with the hotel, is the noise. It would appear that Brighton never sleeps! People outside until the early hours of the morning and early deliveries.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to everyone and anyone.
