We were so disappointed by our experience at Crieff Hydro. We were booked into a family suite and didn't initially receive this accommodation except after complaining - we were then given a room which overlooked the designated smoking area and consequently stank of smoke... more

We had a weekend at Crieff in the self catering chalets and had a brilliant time. The chalets are a bit dated but very spacious and would have slept about four folk comfortably. Travel cots are also provided and there was a DVD and microwave. We took our baby who was... more

Culcrieff cottages are excellent. Took dogs and family, lots to do and only short distance from Edinburgh. Some of the add-ons are a bit pricey, such as £15 childcare cost for <2yr old for 1.5hrs and 'Winter Garden' prices bit high too, but otherwise good value in great location.

A great place for all the family
We have a weekend here every year, with three generations of the same family staying in the hotel. My father remembers staying here when he was in his teens sixty years ago, and says it hasn’t changed that much, other than now being able to get a drink (the hotel used to be ‘dry’) We all stay in different types of room, my sister and her husband prefer to stay in interconnecting rooms as they have young children, we like the executive studios as they have a sitting room with sofa beds which are great for our teenagers. Food is good, we always eat in the Meikle, with the younger children having an early tea with childcare available in the evening to let us have a civilised meal. Childcare is always excellent and there are good activities for older children. Apparently they are planning to upgrade the childcare facilities, so we look forward to that. There is a pool where everyone can go, that gets a bit noisy so we always pay a bit extra for the Victorian Spa, which is adult only and blissfully quiet. Evenings are good fun, with Scottish dancing on offer most days. Plenty of places to sit as the ballroom opens out onto the Winter garden, which is well furnished with tables etc. There is also a small cinema. All in all, a great place for all the family.
Fabulous for all ages
I cant believe that there are negative reviews for Crieff Hydro... I guess there's no pleasing some people! This hotel is one of my favourite in all of my travels (I'm from Scotland, now living in the US and have travelled extensively). There is something for every age group, and every type of person whether you want to relax in the over 18 swimming pool and spa area, or want to do activities on your own or with the family from sun up to sun down. There are kids clubs to give the adults a relaxing break, and a large pool area for the entire family in addition to the Victorian Spa. There are even chalets that the budget conscious or large family can stay in. Food- excellent, breakfast has everything you could possibly want, and it's all you can eat. I also love the Meikle restaurant (adults only). The food is fantastic and the service is impeccable. Rooms- I like the older rooms with character the best, and if for any reason you're not happy with your room the staff do their very best to accommodate you with a different one. I have 2 tips... try to do an express check out or check out the night before because it can get very busy in the mornings, and the second one is for board game fanatics or kids... the front desk have a selection of games you can play for free if you ask them :) I wish I was heading back to Crieff Hydro soon, but unfortunately a trip wont be possible in 2006!
Great for a mini break
I should currently still be in Sicily, but following a missing passport disaster, a mini break in Crieff was the next best thing. Having just returned this morning, I must recommend the Hydro most highly. We had originally booked a two night break, but were so taken with the hotel we extended it to four. Our first room was very small and dark, with missing lightbulbs etc, we requested another and were given one of the refurbished rooms instead. This was lovely, ensuite with shower and bath, large flat screen tv on wall, and very tastefully decorated. There are two restaurants, the Meikle and the Brasserie. We had booked on a dinner bed and breakfast basis, and so were entitled to a three course meal in the Meikle or £19 towards the Brasserie menu. The Meikle is the upper of the two, and after experiencing the Brasserie, we chose to return to the Meikle for the remainder of our meals. There is a dress code in place, no jeans trainers leisure wear etc, we were warned of this is advance, and if you are a couple I would reccomend the Meikle most highly. The Brasserie is fine, the food cannot be faulted, but the atmosphere is a bit brewers fayre. Children aren't able to eat in the other restaurant, so this gives the Brasserie a bit of a playgroup feel. The staff are friendly and efficient, mostly non-scots, and eager to help. We had a small complaint about the restaurant deal with brilliantly. The leisure complex is also very good. There is a full swimming pool with gym, sauna, steam room, etc which is free for guests to use. There is also the Victorian Spa, a beautiful, peaceful private swimming pool with sauna / steam room. This is normally quiet, as there is an additional charge to use the facilities. Well worth it! No entry to under 18s though. The Hydro also boasts a beauty room and hair salon, both look very tempting. There are also badmington / tennis facilities, and various outdoor pursuits such as quad biking, horse riding etc. As we visited in January, outdoor activies weren't really on our agenda, and most time was spent lounging in the Spa. The hotel is very popular with older guests, and has a certain 'age gone by' glamour to it. Saying that, there were no shortage of young couples like ourselves, and lots of families. The hotel absorbs these different groups very well, contrary to some 'family' hotels are too hectic for couples wanting to relax. There are lots of activities for kids and families, including faily scavenger hunts. There is also a kids cinema. All in all, I would reccomend the Hydro to everyone, with one small qualifier - do try and book their dinner / bed / breakfast deals (our was £85pp for two nights) This represented excellent value for money, and i'm not sure I would be eager to pay for all the little extras if we'd paid the full rate.
Great time had by all
If you have booked to stay in this hotel - get ready for a treat!! I could not pick one fault with this hotel. Stayed 26th Dec to 30th Dec and had a ball. Daughter(aged 10) did not want to leave - Scottish dancing every night as though she had done it all her life!! Good mix of elderly couples and young families. Food excellent, room beautiful(clean and very warm, we had to open the window during the night!) and to top it all we had snow! Went horse riding, 4X4 off roading, quad biking, daughter went to kids club (and loved it) we went in Victorian Spa (and fell asleep on sun loungers!!) Will be going back this year (2006) Worth every penny.
Only for families with children
Crieff Hydro is in a wonderful location for exploring Scotland. There is a large estate with lots of outdoor activities available and lots for children to do with the childrens club. However, it is not really up to standard for special occassions, especially when it comes to the food. The food was obviously prepared much earlier and is not of good quality, but OK if you have children. We were in the Meikle restaurant and were not impressed with dinner or breakfast. Service was also very poor and we felt rather hurried by the pace of service, which was not very friendly. There were some staff that were very helpful in the bar area, but generally we felt let down by the service. The room was adequate but nothing special and we had paid for an executive room, supposedly with a view, but we had a reiew of the car park instead. The heating was turned off during the night and the room became very cold (it was well below freezing outside). I would recommend staying at a smaller hotel such as one we visited in Comrie, The Royal Hotel, which costs about the same and has great food and service - not to mention the log fire in the bar.
Excellent Service and Delicious Food
Stayed a 2 night DBB break and was not dissapointed. For only £78per room (only £39 per person) it was a great deal booked on their website. We got a contemporary room which i wasn't expecting , lovely big bed, modern bathroom, modern finishes and a big silver Sony TV. Service was fantastic and staff were friendly and helpfull. The best bit is the food. We dinned both nights at the brasserie (a la carte) you have the chioce of two resturaunts. Couldn't of asked for better food, very tasty , well preseted and a good selection. ten ou of ten for the food. Its hard to fault this hotel. Even the leisure facilities were great. Bar prices were resonable and they don't rip you off for a soft drink = £1.10. most hotels are nearer the £2 mark. Overalll a great place to unwind, wine and dine. Me and my Husband went midweek in November so there was not to many children around. I can imagine in the summer it would be full, but it is a family hotel afterall.
lots to do!
took my husband for his birthday to go quad biking and decided to stay in hotel. the hotel does look very dated in the reception area but the contemporary room we booked was lovely and very comfortable. meikle restaurant has also been renovated and food was delicious. A bit too noisy though! Lots to do, but alot aimed at young kids. Quad biking was excellent!! Would go back and do this again.
Great family hotel
We stayed regularly at the Hydro when my children were young and my now grown up son wanted to take his girlfriend to show her around. We all had a wonderful time. Some money has been invested in the hotel recently and it has improved a great deal. However it hasn't lost that family feeling that it always had, a high standard hotel which not only accepts children but welcomes them. I don't think that it is a hotel that I would pick for an adult celebration as it is always obvious that children will be around. You do pay extra for some activities, horse riding and golf but most just cost pennies to book, tennis and bowling. The main pool is free it is only the victorian spa that has a fee. There are so many attractions available, the surrounding countryside is so lovely and the hotel itself is so good that I think that The Hydro would still be my first choice for a family hotel.
If it's your Honeymoon/Special Occasion - DO NOT stay at this hotel!
Having stayed at the Crieff Hydro earlier this year for my honeymoon, I don't think I will ever return again. The staff were well aware it was our honeymoon but unfortunately, they ruined it for us. We requested the honeymoon suite months in advance, only to arrive and find we had been given one of the worst rooms at the hotel. After complaining, we were told there were no other rooms available and we would just have to put up with it for that night......the room we got the next day was still NOT the honeymoon suite we requested! We also had friends who tried to deliver wine etc to us, which never quite made it to our room! These things were apparently insignificant to the hotel and they just didn't seem to understand that is was a special occasion........time that cannot be given back!! I do think this is a nice hotel, but if you are planning on staying for a honeymoon/special birthday etc, I suggest you find another hotel where the staff can actually plan and organise properly!
Dull Dowdy Stay
I stayed for a short break at Crieff Hydro.Never again. The room was dirty. The staff were mostly unhelpful,or disinterested. The breakfast was fairly good but the overall feeling was unwelcoming and dowdy.
