Hotel Description:

Undoubtedly, the great attraction of the Roc E Mar is its stunning beachfront situation and unparallelled views of the surrounding picture postcard coastline.
While the keynote of the accommodation is unquestionably simplicity, this friendly, family run hotel exudes a relaxed, bright and breezy atmosphere that’s sure to make you feel at home from the moment you arrive.

" Roc E Mar is situated in a superb... "

Roc E Mar is situated in a superb location over looking the Bay, probably some of the finest views you could imagine. Hotel is basic but quite adequate for a 3 Star, breakfast was excellent continental style and staff were friendly, but a knowledge of French would be an advantage as few people in the hotel or Propriano itself spoke any English. One disappointment though was the beach equipment which is not owned or managed by the hotel, but the people who run the beach bar (the Tour operator, Holiday Options' brochure though does not mention this). Most of the sunbeds and umbrellas were broken and there was no indication that they would be replaced, we got the impression that the bar owners were not interested in the beach at all, we actually bought an umbrella whilst we were there and left it behind on our last day. Any complaints to the Hotel about the beach equipment were completely ignored saying that it was nothing to do with them. One other thing to mention, as the beach bar was not owned by the hotel, any food and drink consumed could not be added to your hotel bill, it had to be paid in cash each time. The beach bar is far from what we would call a "restaurant", a bit of a shack really, but had a great atmosphere at night when lit up with candles and small electric lights, food options were very limited but great to be able to eat by the sea. Also note that the bar did not open until about 12 - 1pm each day so no chance of a cappaccino or beer mid morning even if you wanted one ! I would also recommend booking if you want to eat at the beach as some people were turned away one evening as it was fully booked and they didn't even open one evening ! Propriano was about a 20 minute walk into town and about 30 minutes back (up hill), plenty of reasonable restaurants and bars catering for all tastes. The hotel has masses of potential and really needs to take responsibility for the beach bar and beach equipment. If they did, I would certainly recommend this hotel, if they don't, and you like lazing on the beach, I would not select this hotel.

" Breakfast is served in a room with a... "

Breakfast is served in a room with a stunning view of the bay. Pity about the breakfast, best to go into town for a proper coffee and croissant etc. Other than this, and the typical absence of coffee making equipment in the room (and a fridge would have been nice), the hotel is hard to fault. Its clean, the rooms spacious and well kept, and the view from the balcony was simply stunning. Most nights all you can hear is the lapping of the waves. No road noise and the peaceful bliss was only once interrupted by a rather poor rendition of Elvis songs from the hotel up the road. French karaoke is even worse than we have here.

The private beach (very clean, sheltered and ideal) and beach restaurant and bar were first rate. Simple food, but very good, great friendly service and the best views of the sunset that you could hope for. We were on a package that included 3 evening meals, but it was so good and convenient, we ate there more often. The crème Brule was amazing, as was the chilled Pietra chestnut beer.

The town of Propriano is OK for a quick drink, has all the shops you need, and a few good restaurants, but otherwise rather run down and best avoided, but the town as a base for touring is perfect. Sartene very worth visiting, but Bonifacio was a bit of a dump, typical town, great potential, setting, architecture etc, but badly needing investment. Oh, the roads are all tricky, very mountainous, and regrettably full of maniac drivers!

The hotel, weather and sites were such that the holiday was great
