Sep 2008, Ms C Cole

I would visit Bulgaria again, but would not recommend the Wela Hotel. The staff were very rude, except for the blonde lady who worked in the shop.
On two occassions we seen other people charged €150 for sheets, one example would be where someone got a henna tatto & it rubbed off on the sheet, when they offered to get it cleaned in a launderette instead of paying €150 or replace it, the hotel satff threatened to call the police!! (even though it would wash off)
We also seen other people charged for breaking a glass! so it seems that this is where they made the bulk of their money.
There main economy would be tourism but they are not geared for this or trained in good customer care practice
The breakfasts were cold & inedible. The only good points is that our hotel room was spotless and wasent noisey when you needed to sleep.
In general we enjoyed the nitelife and trips to Nessebar etc..

Well Well,
after reading previous reviews on this hotel i though people were probably being finiky, until i stayed there! We arrived in the early hours of saturday 30.08.2008. Got into bed, and the sheets felt dirty. In the morning myself and a friend woke up riddled with bites all over our legs! So we decided to do a test, we put makeup on the corners of the sheets, which remained there all week, proving that our sheets had not been changed once for the whole time, which made us think that they may have not been changed fromt the previous guests! After speaking about this to other guests we realised it had been the same with them two. ( A group of people wanted to confront the hotel manager- when the manager seen everyone she walked away... to much to handle i think!). We lifted the sheets and the matress was disgusting! I stayed in a motel in thailand where the accomadation was better!! The breakfast in the morning was awful, i only had it once it was that bad, even though i had paid for bed and breakfast! If i stayed at a place like this in england i would check straight out! The carpets in the room were filthy black stains everywhere! Although our rooms were tidied daily they were not cleaned to any strectch of the imagination! The hotel rating is a 4* i dont think so!!
We were in a quiet location even though on a main road like most hotels in Bulgaira we didnt hear any noise! Apart from in the mornings with children.
Early hours of one morning we were disturbed by a cleaner in our room!? This was weird but we were not the only guests to have had this happen.
The staff on reception were very helpful, the girls in the bar appeared to have a major attitude problem!!
Id advise Not to say at the Wela!!!!! But go Bulgaria it was imazing!!!

I recently went to Wela hotel with my boyfriend. We are both 20 and found this hotel quite satisfactory. The rooms were cleaned everyday and the staff were more than helpfull, however they did struggle to understand us at times. The main downfall for us was the food,it wasn't the best to say the least but we were only bed and breakfast so i can't comment on lunch and dinner.
The hotel itself is quite up to date it does have its flaws but it is by far one of the best hotels in sunny beach.
There were mainly couples in the hotel which suited us and a few families, most of which were not english spoken. We had a great time staying in this hotel.
We won't be returning to sunny beach for own personal preferences but i would recommend this hotel to other people wishing to visit sunny beach.

Sep 2008, Miss C McAlinden

1 reader found this review helpful

I stayed at the Hotel Wela in july with my son and my parents. I would advise anyone who is considering booking the Hotel Wela to cross it off the list.
The Hotel Wela is without a doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed in-
* It is situated on a busy main road that is hazardous to cross. Especially if you have young children.
* The staff are rude, unhelpful and will try to get as much money as possible from you. WARNING- If you break a glass, stain a towel, spill a drink or damage anything then you will be charged. Or should i say robbed..... while i was staying at the Wela another couple had accidently burnt a cigarette on a bed sheet and the hotel tried to charge them £80 to replace a sheet!!! A young lad accidently broke the pool cue and they tried to charge his parents £150! They will not allow you to get on the bus to go home unless you have paid up!
* The food is appalling. I stayed for 2 weeks half board and i went to the restaurant once. Even the food you paid for was very poor and served cold. If you stay at the Wela, do not go half board, eat out!
* Entertainment is no existant. So do not stay at the Wela if you have children, there is nothing for them to do.
* We booked a room for 3 adults and 1 child and were put in a room with 2 single beds, a bed shoved in a corner and a chair bed. There had put us in a normal size family room and just shoved an extra chair in. When we went to ask to be moved to the room we had paid for they said it was not available and there was nothing they could do. We did not get any money refunded.
* A little girl cut her foot open in the childrens pool whilest we were there. It was a deep cut, which she had to have stitches. When her father checked the pool he noticed that the tiles were coming off the bottom and were very sharp. He informed the hotel manager of what had happened to his daughter and asked that they repair the pool before allowing children back in. He told him there was nothing he could do and walked off!
All in all, the Hotel Wela is a terrible hotel. I have never been on holiday and wanted to come home after my first day.
As for Bulgaria, I wouldnt go back! The bulgarians do not seem to want you there, they are unfriendly, unhelpful and all they want to do it rip you off in any way they can.
It was, without a doubt, the worse holiday I have been on.

When we booked our holiday at the...

Aug 2008, Mrs F Buckley

1 reader found this review helpful

When we booked our holiday at the Wela, we read all the reviews as so many people do and decided after reading both good and bad reviews, would take it as we find it. Here goes!!
On arrival at the Wela, we were quite impressed – the reception area is clean, bright and quite welcoming with quite attractive décor. We arrived late so didn’t take in much about the room til the following day.
The first thing I can say is that the beds are really uncomfortable. There were two single and a sofa bed – I slept in both and each was as bad as the other. Also, if you sat on the end of either single bed, the slats underneath were in danger of breaking. As is usual in hotels abroad, there is a severe lack of storage space considering the room was for 4 people. The bathroom facilities are ok as far as things go but our shower drained VERY slowly and had a tendency to leak into the living area and leave a damp patch by the wall. Considering the wall had a plug socket on it, this was a little bit worrying.
A word of warning = if you (or one of the kids in our case) breaks one of the glasses in the room, you will get charged! Our youngest, quite by accident knocked over a glass so we meticulously picked up all the bits, made sure they were safe in the bin and thought that was that. Oh no! When the cleaner came the next day, she noticed the clink of broken glass, swung said bag out of the bin babbled something and phoned to reception. We then had a call to say that we had to pay 3 lev (about £1.50) to replace it.
As far as cleanliness goes, it wasn’t too bad but wasn’t brilliant either. The cleaner came in every day and emptied bins, changed towels etc and brushed up any bits on the carpet. .she also changed the sheets on the beds at least twice while we were there. However, cleaning wasn’t what you’d expect of a supposed 4 star hotel - -we found debris that has got to be have been left from previous occupants under the bed and I even found a discarded toothbrush behind the sofa bed! Oh – before I forget, the shower tray was a little bit on the grimy side and I know we showered every day but you don’t get that level of grime after a couple of days use do you? Also, a couple of tiles on the shower tray were cracked that left a gap and didn’t help with the grime problem.
Next thing – food. .I’m not what you would call a fussy eater but even I struggled to find enough to fill me up for breakfast. There was the usual bacon, eggs etc and the usual spicy continental sausage. Not so bad you may think but everything was covered in a film of grease that wasn’t very pleasant and was quite off putting. Failing that you can opt for croissants or toast (takes forever to do) or leftover cakes that they put out from the night before. They also put out a selection of fruit to choose from as well.
Like a lot of other reviews say the hotel is on a main road and you need to be extremely careful as there are no crossings and even if there were no one would take any notice. They all drive like maniacs and it is a case of waiting for a big enough gap both ways in the traffic and making a run for it.
Outside of the hotel there are LOADS of places to choose from to eat so if, like us you go bed and breakfast, there’s plenty to choose from. Just a word of warning – along the promenade, you will be harassed by just about every restaurant you pass to go and eat in there – just be polite and say no and carry on walking – some will shout comments but they are best ignored. Also you need to be careful of restaurants who don’t display prices outside. They entice you in with promises of discounts and/or free drinks then you find that the prices are extortionate. One place we found to be quite reasonable with price and good size portions was ‘La Banana’ – we ate there quite a few times and I would strongly recommend you give it a try. Also, try the Indian restaurant attached to the Hotel Pirin situated just behind McDonalds.
As far as trips out are concerned, there aren’t that many so the decent ones they do have get booked. There are two water parks – don’t get too excited. There’s a very small one in Nessebar and the one we went to in Sunny Beach. The park is very small and not on the scale of those in Spain. But it is ok and filled a few hours during the day.
If you can stand the packed out buses, a trip into Nessebar for a bit of shopping is well worth it. We tended to go up and down the promenade in Sunny Beach during the day as it was a bit more relaxed than during the evening when I became rather more rowdy with lots more noise from the bars. The further down the promenade you went the pubs got ‘younger’ in that they were more rowdy – you soon get to know which ones to avoid. I would say that the Wela is more suited to couples and groups off friends who like to go out drinking in pubs and bars rather than families with young children. You are probably better off paying a bit more and booking somewhere that has entertainment in the hotel.
On the whole, the holiday wasn’t so bad but if we were to visit Bulgaia again,we would give Sunny Beach a miss (definitely the Wela) and try one of the other resorts - probably Golden Sands.

Hotel was dreadfull, never stay at the hotel Wela you will be massively disappointed. The area is under developed and not ready for tourists, the locals and hotel staff are rude, arrogant and have no idea what manners are. I wouldnt even serve an animal the food they offer to their guests.
MY ADVICE, AVOID IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!!!!

No way in hell is this a 4 star hotel...
3 / 10
Jul 2008, Mrs Lm Jones

No way in hell is this a 4 star hotel - more like a 2 star.
And the defence of star systems being different in some countries is rubbish. Other 4 stars just 200m down the road were a world away in standards.
Good points - Its cean and well positoned
Bad points...
Beds - uncomfortable
Furniture - Basic and uncomfortable
Linen & Towels - Like sand paper
Food - very greasy, driping with oil and repetitive
Pool - salt water ( gave me a weird rash) - athough clean
Air conditioing - underpowered and a waste of time
Staff - majority unfriendly and unhelpful
( though the blond lady from the shop was wonderful)
Entertainment - non existent
Atmosphere - like being at school - rules galore
Interesting incidents during the 1 week..
1) Maintenance let themselves into our room 8am in the morning while we were in bed (well actually undressed on the bed) and had to be ushered out of our room by my husband whislt i run for cover.
2) Recepton mislaid my Passport ( you have to give them to reception when you check in)
3) The check out information was unclear so we asked twice when we should check out, and both receptionists stated the staurday early am and spoke to us like we were stupid for asking
4) On Friday pm we were told we had to leave our rooms the day before our departure and even though i have a very young child they would not comproise in any way despite my challanging the request- in fact they charged a significant amount for not being out by noon. - our rep was not around to help so we had to comply The owner was quite agressive in the encounter ,whilst the receptionist i mentioned earlier stood by looking sheepish
5) In the 14 hour wait we then had for the transfer to the airport there was no waiting room, no showers, and the staff were obviousy irritated by our hanging around in the receptoin area for the last 4 hours ( it was 11pm by this point we had no alternative- our daughter wanted to sleep)
These people treat the guests as necessary evils. All they want is to extract as much money as possible from you - and for that grace they will tolerate your presence - as long its by theyre rules. There are very many people in sunny beach like this - i have never been anywhere like this before and hope never to see anywhere like it again.
After 20 years of traveling all over the world this is the first holiday i have not enjoyed - this is because i am not fussy and do not expect the countries i visit to supply westernised facilities. So i think my review is objective.

Jul 2008, Miss N Roberts

This hotel is no where near a 4* hotel. The room was filthy, parts of the light brown carpet were nearly black & they didn't own a vacuum cleaner. The toilet & sink was not cleaned in 2 weeks & the bathroom floor only wiped 3 times.
The staff were rude, demanding payment of your meal before you'd even finished it.
Our view was of a building site.
Sunny Beach is an ok resort but very very touristy & seemed to have millions of hotels. It is no where near as cheap as it's made out to be, some meals cost more than in England. The people are generally nice, but watch out for the fruit sellers on the beach as they ripped a number of people off.

Jun 2008, Mr Andy Cowap

I stayed in the Wela last year for the first two weeks in June. The hotel its self was fantastic. the rooms were always clean and we were supplied with clean towels every day and the bed linen was changed every other day. The pool and its surroundings was very clean and quiet. the facilities were good as well. However the gym wasn't so much a gym as a room with 5 pieces of equipment. The staff were very pleasant and obliging. However the reception staff were less tolerant to younger guests. The distance from the hotel to the main strep was about 100 Metres which was handy. The food in the hotel wasn’t the best (cold bolognas) however, neither was the food in the rest of the resort. I would recommend getting the bus into nessebar for the best food. Its only a 5 minute bus journey(the bus comes every 5 minutes). I would recommend the Wela to anybody. I am going back with a group of friends in a few days but we didn’t book the wela because the prices were too expensive!!!

Just got back from the hotel wela....

Just got back from the hotel wela. Never been to bulgaria before but definitely would go back again as only went for a week would have liked longer. Hotel was situated on a main road, but that wasnt a problem. It was a 5 minute walk from the beach and the hustle and bustle of shops and bars, which stretched for miles right into nesebar. food in hotel was ok, we had bed and breakfast, coffee and toast, but was other food there, but didnt really cater for the english as such, but there are plently of places to eat and is cheap enough. We arrived on the Monday night 26th May and there was and had been schools out parties which went on til 4 in the morning, and continued through til the tuesday night. Some guests found this a problem, but personally it didnt bother us, they were well behaved, ok the music was loud but didnt stop us from sleeping, and wasnt woken by them. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms cleaned everyday clean towels. Would definitely stay there again. Only downside if you can call it that, no entertainment at hotel, would have been nice even a couple of times to come back to a bit of something happening, but all in all this didnt affect our holiday. Good value and lovely food was the Star Inn, backing onto the beach, lovely mexican (like chiquotos) nachos fajitas etc called mamaritas which is in the sunnybeach mall about 10minute walk off the main road, and is next door to macdonalds. lots of shops, markets stalls etc. definitely recommend the khans tent excursion, dont book with your tour operator as can work out £25 dearer for 2 adults and 2 kids, we booked outside there are plenty around, and paid about £18 less for 2 adults 1 kid, and they pick you up and drop you back. Food there was lovely. Entertainment good. A must. If we do go back we would consider staying at the Hotel Wela again.

Back in August '06 me and my family...

Jan 2008, Miss E.L Price

1 reader found this review helpful

Back in August '06 me and my family went to Sunny Beach and stayed in Hotel Wela...We arrived at a ridiculous time about 2am (their time) but there were staff there reading to greet us, take our cases and show us to our rooms. The first thing inside the hotel we noticed in the reception area is how impecibly clean it was, the reception desk was manned and that the hotel bar was still open. In my party was myself (17 at the time), my parents (40's), Auntie and Uncle (again 40's), Cousins (who were 10 and 8) and my Nan (mid 60's).
We got shown to our rooms which consisted of (in a 2 bedroom room), a double bed (well two singles together) and a chair which also changed into a bed. There was an en-suite bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. TV with Sky, mirror, desk, phone, balcony (mine did face onto building work but the work wasn't in progress while i was there), fridge and A/C. There was the optional facility of a safe which we shared between the family. The rooms were cleaned daily with the beds being made and clean towels delivered and although the cleaners didn't seem to speak fluent English they did try and were very friendly. The reception staff spoke very good English as well as the bar staff who were all very helpful and gave service with a smile.
The pool was lovely, there was the issue of towels on the loungers provided but from what i have seen, read and heard this is common through Bulgaria. We found that having sun loungers away from the pool was better because it was a big quieter, you didn't get splashed when people got carried away and you could general have an umberella to every couple of beds (midday umberellas were in high demand with the sun). There were on site shops with an inflatables store which kindly allowed you to use their facilities to blow up your own inflatables you took free of charge, as well as a general store selling snacks, bread, water, pop etc. There is an internet room filled with up to date computers which was very cheap to use and many other options such as a nail bar (which my mum, nan and auntie used) which wasn't badly priced and the results were lovely), other spa treatments but we didn't try these.
The hotel is well situated, it is a slight walk to the beach and shops, bars but it's away from the hustle and bustle. There's a little train running which you can take to nessebar which works out cheap and if you've been walking all day it's nice to relax and just enjoy the views. When we came to leave there was a room for suit cases to stay, we decided though that with the number in our groups to have someone stay at the hotel just to really keep an eye on time and travel arrangements.
The only issues that i really had was that the breakfast was repetitive although very nice and after a few days i was bored of it but often chose to lie in rather than eat. Also i did get stuck in one of the lifts, i'm not generally a fan of them in the first place but after seeing them working well and using them a few times i decided to use them. I went in on my own on this occation after being in the pool and the lift got stuck just after leaving the first floor...despite hitting the emergency button nothing happened until another couple pressed for the lift when the doors eventually opened (i was probably only in there a couple of minutes but it felt like longer). After complaining to the front desk we found that the emergency button had been turned off due to kids messing about with it, which fair do's but if it had have been an evening when no-one was around i don't know how long i'd have been stuck for. We found this to happen a few times, not just to myself but other guests and when we complained we were told it was due to the temperature and the oil working the lifts.
Overall i would go back to Wela. I know my family are going back ata similar time this year however because i'm going with my friends for more of an alcoholic fuelled holiday this time were going to look for somewhere a little closer to the beach, but deffinately try this hotel out, it's really good value for money!
