" Xmas Holiday in Tikal Apartments "
Submitted By: jontowell@hotmail.com
Arrived on the evening of 20/12/08 with my wife and 2 children. We had booked a 1 bedroom arpartment sleeping 4.
Terrible reception service, no-one knew what they where doing. Lots of people queuing, very slow service.
Got out key for our apartment on the 5th floor, to be fair it was clean and tidy apart from the smell of dirty smoke in there. it seems that it is ok to smoke in the apartments. The disgusting smell had penetrated the soft furishings, cushions mattresses etc.
The kitchen was small, but clean and tidy all utensils where good and everything nice and modern. Nothing is provided other than a basic cleaning kit and 2 tea towels.
You have to make your own beds, 2 single in the bedroom, 1 pillow each which caused a nightmare. it took 3 days to get extra pillows. We where provided with only 3 single duvets but with 2 double duvet covers. Meant on the first night i had no sheets, no duvet, 1 pillow and virtually sleeping in the floor. The pullout bed from under the couch is AWFUL. Very uncomfortable and very small. Literally slept on the floor for the whole week. We where under the impression that we would at least get a double pull out bed. So my wife and i felt like we where camping.
The ski lockers are fantastic, and the access to ski in and ski out is second to none. Take the lift to the 6th floor and you can literally click your skis on and ski down to the lifts. Take the gondola from the bottom of Val Thorens and it brings you just above the apartments, so you can ski back down. We where on the 5th floor so access was superb.
Val Thorens is MEGA expensive so be prepared. With the euro matching the UK Pound, £6 for a large beer, between £2.00 and £3.50 for a can of coke, be careful. try to buy as any groceries as you can and prepare food in the apartment.
Apart from the apartments being a bit small, and the beds are terrible, overall it is still quite good.

Advice: Go to the Frog and Roastbeef pub for happy hour 5-7pm cheapest beer in the town.
Activities: The SKIING is Second to none!!

" Above average standard apartments,... "

Above average standard apartments, refurbishment really shows. At lower end of resort with ski in ski out from 6th floor.
If you enjoy rustic style restaurant, prices from 8 euro upwards for a Pizza, try le petit fornet approx. 100 metres up the hill from apartments, on the left.
Val Thorens was very snow sure in the worst year for snow cover in Europe for 30 years. Advantage of 3 Vallees ski area from the resort.
Nightlife seemed to be dominated by lots of spotty drunk teenagers - great if you are one, not so hot if you are not!!
If you look carefully, there are a few bars that suit other tastes.
Many say Val Thorens is not the best looking resort - they are right, but for a modern French resort it's definitely better than some and looks a lot better than many UK towns!
Great for learning to ski or intermediates.I don’t snowboard, so am unable to comment.
Overall, a great trip!

" Have just got back from a lovely... "

Have just got back from a lovely Christmas holiday staying at the Residence Le Tikal in Val Thorens, France. I stayed in an apartment with three friends, and we were all impressed with the quality of the apartment. It appeared quite new, and comprised a main living room with kitchenette, balcony, twin bedroom, bathroom (with full size bath!) and separate toilet. The apartment was pleasantly furnished with a dark wood table and chairs and double sofa-bed.
The walls were pale wood, like a log cabin, and decorated with tasteful black and white winter themed prints. The apartment was very warm, with each room having a small heater except for the bathroom which had a heated towel rail instead. There was also a heater in the hallway. The ski lockers were a few floors down, but not a struggle as there were lifts. Each locker had space for four snowboards and a boot heating machine with space for four pairs of boots.
The hotel itself was architecturally interesting, with a large open space in the centre complete with stone pathways, blue lighting and trees. The rooms were all around the sides with windows into the middle open area. It was mostly made with large wooden beams, and had little open stairways throughout. Visually it was very attractive, if slightly unusual. You could also ski in and out at level 6, very handy indeed. What was really well thought out was the underground walkway from Le Tikal to it's sister hotel across the road. It saved you from the cold and took you straight to the laundry facilities and supermarket in the sister hotel.
The resort itself was pretty, considering it had been purpose built, and had a good range of bars and restaurants. The people on the whole were friendly and helpful, especially if you tried a little French. I found the food and drink prices to be very reasonable. There was a wooden walkway which took you from one end of the resort to the main shops and bars area which I found to be a great time saver. It was much better than walking up the road and a little bit warmer!
The only disappointment was our Airtours holiday rep, who kept us waiting for two hours on the coach at the airport once we had landed, and appeared periodically to tell us we were waiting for more people and it would only be another ten minutes. It eventually dawned on me that we were waiting for another flight to land, and whether this was delayed or not I don't know, but it would have been nice to have been told the truth, and we could have got off the freezing coach and had a coffee in the airport.
We were also not offered any excursions, and not told our departure time. We had to phone the helpline in the UK to find this out, as the phone number the rep had given us didn't work. He was a personable young man, but just didn't seem to be that good at his job.
The resort was nice, I thought there was a good selection of runs, considering two of us were beginners, and two experienced snowboarders. The queues for the ski lifts were minimal, a few minutes at most, and the pistes seemed well groomed. All in all, it was a great resort, and worth the 3.5 hour transfer time. I would definitely go back to Val Thorens, and I would want to stay at Le Tikal.
