We enjoyed our 4th stay
We have just spent a week at St Ives in a woodland chalet. Although not the most luxurious of accomodation it is fairly good value and is in a good location. We have stayed on the site 4 times previously so it cannot be too bad. The first time however we stayed in one of the tiny 2 bedroomed shoe boxes and found the rooms extremely cramped. The Woodland chalet is quite spacious with a good sized kitchen and reasonable size bedrooms. The kitchen also contains a dish washer and they thoughtfully leave 4 dishwasher tablets for use. It is advertised as sleeping 6-8 but it would be rather cramped for 8. We found it ideal for just 4 of us and a dog! The lounge is upstairs and is bright unlike some of the other chalets on the park which look quite grim. The chalet is heated by portable electric heaters and there was originally 4 when we arrived, one of which did not work. However, this was replaced almost immediately when we complained plus we were asked if we would like a further heater. The accomodation was reasonably clean and smelt fresh. On a previous occasion it did smell of dog altho attempts were made to mask this with air fresheners. However, if dogs are allowed in chalets then i guess it is inevitable that there will be some doggy smells. The entertainment is very basic but we tend to use the chalet as a base. I would go back again but always request this particular chalet. After seeing some of the older style bungalow type chalets and reading the reviews I would not consider any other. St Ives itself is brilliant and the holiday park is a short car drive away from there and Carbis Bay. There are also great country walks accessible by just venturing outside the site.
Damp, Smelly, Awful!!!
We were to stay at St. Ives holiday village for 4 nights, booked through one of the holidays the Sun newspaper do. Luckily, we has already looked at the reviews of this site on Tripadvisor before we went, so we didn't have very high expectations. However, the accomodation was so bad, I felt that I just had to add to the reviews. Please, please, DO NOT spend your money on this holiday camp. The locals have told us that if you want to stay near St. Ives, which is the most beautiful town to visit, then stay at Carbis Bay. Our chalet stank of damp. The staff had put airfresheners everywhere, there were three just in the living room. There was mould growing out of the ceiling in the bedroom and the skirting boards in every room. The sofa was actually wet, it was so damp. The mattresses didn't feel too bad, until actually slept on. The cooker was the only part of the chalet that was in clean condition, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to eat there. After the first night, the insoles in my shoes were wet. After the second, my book had crinkled up, like I'd been reading it in the bath. After the third night we packed up and went home. All of our clothes had to be washed because they had picked up the mouldy smell. Please look at the photos I have posted.
Holiday at St I ves Holiday Village
We stayed at St Ives Holiday Village in both 2005 and 2006. We had a fantastic time on both occasions. We did however find the swimming pool to have less than adequate changing facilities. We were disappointed that there was no changing rooms other than the toilets. The clubhouse and entertainment was great and the children loved both visits. So much so, we're going back in 2007 for another week. I would however like to see the bar serve stella instead of Grolch though :-) The shop has almost everything needed, and there is a good play area for the children. The wildlife also gives the children great pleasure........ ie, the seagulls and rabbits.
We loved St Ives
we stayed monday to friday and had a lovely time, the chalets are very basic but they are in stunning surroundings. The pool was very good and the food in the resturant. The entertainment was very good my four year old loved the kids hour. St ives is a beautiful place and I can't wait to go back.
The Pits - Do Not Go ! This is horrendous place!
St. Ives Holiday Village - Where do you start! this place really is a shambles - We are a fmily of 4 we stayed in the Oakleigh style of Chalet (rather grim shed) - Even though it was the hottest July in recent years - our washed clothes were still DAMP after 4 days the chalets are digusting they are dirty smelly and dark! the park itself is dated the club room is poor the arcade of kids would look old if it were the 80's the site shop is about as cost effective as shopping at harrods everyday! the pool is dodgy stinky and dark DO NOT BELIEVE the pictures they must have been taken in the 70's. But the worst is the accomadation you cant see daylight and damp is smelly ! I can only say Avoid. St Ives is really wonderful place dont let John Fowler put you off!
Could be better.
We went to St Ives Holiday Village in June 2006. It lived up to my expectations, which were low. The 'Gold' class, “recently refurbished” chalet was barely adequate. Even though it was June, due to the oppressive trees it was still pretty chilly in there, and smelt damp. (I saw de-humidifiers being taken to some other chalets) There was one plug in convector heater for the whole chalet, so bedrooms were cold at night. There were no sockets in the bedrooms, and only two available sockets in the living room, one of which was needed for the heater. The main (double) bedroom had a tiny wardrobe, with no hangers. Though as it was full of the vacuum cleaner and clothes airer they would have been little use anyway. The other (twin) room also had a tiny wardrobe. Luckily there were only three of us so we could use the empty bad to store our clothes on. The living room furniture was absolutely awful. The sofa bed (which we were told wouldn’t be in our chalet) was so uncomfortable that it was useless. We sat on the dining chairs, which hardly makes for a relaxing time. The kitchen was ok, with decent storage space, kettle, toaster and microwave. The bathroom was ok too, though nowhere to hang clothes while you used the appalling shower. On arrival the chalet was superficially clean, though on closer examination there were a lot of cobwebs around. As we’d been made to wait until 4pm to check in I’d assumed that they’d had plenty of time to clean thoroughly. The clubroom was old and shabby, and very smoky. The entertainment was very amateurish. They tried hard, but due to a lack of talent, they failed. The pool was adequate. Communal changing rooms are not to everyone’s taste, and were tired and dilapidated. The water in the pool was cold, and the water slide is considerably less exciting than watching paint dry. Adults should avoid it unless they enjoy the embarrassment of getting stuck. Overall, we had a good holiday despite our accommodation. Cornwall is a lovely place with lots of great places to visit. Would we go on a John Fowler’s holiday again? Probably not. It wasn’t terrible, but it should have been a lot better.
Damp, Depressing, Dingy
Three couples with there children all arrived in July for what was supposed to be a great holiday, as soon as we locked eyes on the 'holiday village' we had a bad feeling. It was terrible in every way, the chalets and bedding were damp we couldn't even sleep it smelt so terrible we managed to get pints of water every day with a de-humidifyer we had requested, it was so dark and depressing(and these were supposed to be the 'gold standard supperior chalets) I hate to have seen what the inferior ones were like. The food was inedible we didn't even bother, and the so called restaurant food area was shocking and smelt like a hospital, entertainment if that's what you call it was equally shocking, bingo with a £5 jackpot all based in a dimly lit hall type place which was as equally depressing as the chalet, the so called swimming pool was disgusting, rust everywhere, really old and dated like everything else, and probably a health hazard, I would never have let my kids go in there. Thank god it was a hot week so we could leave first thing in the morning and return last thing at night otherwise we would have packed our bags and left there and then, a couple from the Midlands who were in a 'Gold' chalet next door also hated it, and when asked to be moved were told that these were the best chalets on the site. We couldn't wait to leave, it was the worst depressing holdiday we have ever had, and would not recommend it to anyone, it resembled on which we all agreed a down troden youth hostle or country prison, it was terrible. When trying to contact the owner with our complaint a few times we were consantly fobbed off with one of his side kicks and he never returned our calls, it wasn't cheap and I'm sure JOHN FOWLER is making a packet out of the smoky image he portrays of his holiday camp, I was dying to ask if he holidays there himself, however I'm sure with the money he's made from fools like us the answere would be no, he prefers something a little more up-market, the place is fit for one thing only, to be pulled down or used as a hostel of some sort, it's dark, damp and disgusting!
Long Weekend
went for a long weekend, chalet was clean, dry and tidy, double glazed and warm air heating, clean kitchen and toilet. Clubs house was a little outdated as most are, but was sufficient for our needs, plus being at the end of season I wasn't expecting great things. Food was limited unless you went into there resturant, if you got food over the bar it was all deep fried and looked it! One big problem was the fact that we couldn't get into our chalet until 4pm, although we had to be out of the chalet at 10am, that seems a little excessive to me as we have a 2 year old with us. Place was near St Ives which was cool for a wander and also other places such as Lands End and Corbis Bay. Would go back there again, although we were there on one of those offers from the Sun newspaper, but for the cost it was worth it. Overal a pleasant stay
where's the prozac!
I have just come back from one of the most depressing holidays I have ever had! Booked a "gold standard" forest lodge directly with John Fowler holidays. On arrival we were thoroughly depressed just looking at the outside of our accommodation, it looked just like a shed and was situated in an area where all natural light was blocked completely by the "forest", we did expect there to be woodland but not quite so oppressive. On enetering our gloom thickened as we found that "complete refurbishment last christmas" actually meant pine panelling almost everywhere, two bedrooms that were so small only about a foot of floor space remained between the end of the double bed and the wall and the other had just about enough space to close the door! When we booked the very nice lady told us the only difference between this and a 4-6 berth was that as there were only 3 of us we would have a 3 piece suite in the lounge instead of a sofa bed, it seems she was wrong as all other accommodation seemed bigger and it was just as well there were only 3 of us as the furniture consisted of yes you've guessed it a sofa bed and one rather uncomfortable chair. Add to that no bedside lights, full length mirror, hooks for robes in the bathroom, patio furniture (which other lodges had), no sockets in bedrooms, a window which would not open, no privacy as on the path for all to get to their lodges, damp, (when we complained were told "all cornish property is damp") given dehumidifier which collected about 2 inches of water after just a couple of hours, all in all a thoroughly depressing holiday, definitely not worth the money and will not be staying again. The one redeeming feature was the very pleasant and helpful staff who would have moved us to another lodge except for the fact this was bank holiday and all were completely booked solid.
john fowler holidays at hayle
we first visited st ives three years ago with some friends who asked us to make up the party so as we needed a holiday we decided to have a change and go to st ives. what a nice surpise it was for us the site we stayed at john fowler holidays in hayle was really nice, its clean, the staff are very helpful and its set in woodland which is nice and quiet. there is a big family room where you find foxy club for the kids and even though none of us have children we really enjoyed orselves, there are shows on every night for the family. there is a shop on site for your shopping and all the necessities, a small restaurant fro the times when you dont want to cook. there is a bus service that will take you to st ives or penzance which comes on site every hour, the pool is ace and my husband recommends the massages, we are definately going back again this year and really looking forward to it, we go to carbis bay which is a lovely sandy beach where you can go swimming in the pure blue sea, or go round the shops of st ives looking for trinkets etc, we always visit lands end and have our photo taken but this year we are doin lands end and john o' groats. not on the same holiday of course ha ha .
