" Skiing Holiday 2009 "
Submitted By: frances.0161
This was my first ever skiing holiday & I really enjoyed it. 4 couples went with 2 children each & we all had a lovely time. The majority of us were first time skiers & the tuition from the Ski schools was excellent. We stayed in the Apartments Del Clos attached to the main Hotel which were fine although ours was a bit noisy with snow ploughs waking us up in the early hours. The Hotel was lovely & the restaurant was very good with a wide choice of food. The entertainment was good & there was plenty to keep the children occupied.
My only dissapointment was that I had a skiing top taken from my room. I reported it to the receptionists who checked with the housekeeping staff to see if it had got mixed up with the laudry but no-one seemed to know anything about it. Twice I asked our tour rep from Neilson to look into it & she assured me that she would speak to the manager & see what she could find out but she never bothered to which im quite cross about. In the end I spoke to the manager myself & left him with my contact details. Also one of the children in our party had some money taken again from her room, so just be careful to put your valuables in the safe. Not much you can do about clothes though.

This was my first time skiing and I recommend it to anybody out there to go.
Not only did the skiing top it off but so did the hotel, Hotel Nordic.
We actually stayed in the apartments of the hotel in block B; however apparently, block A is a lot more spacious.
Our family went into ski school as this was our first time on snow, and it was amazing, the views, being able to ski, all the new people you meet, everything was just the holiday of a lifetime.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, there’s a games room catering for adults and children, a fantastic restaurant and a nice spacious lobby.
It also has a pool however if staying in the apartments it does come at a price to use the facility.
Other than that everything was superb.

We also stayed in the Apartments Del Clos which were absolutely amazing although I would say that you should go for the 'Block A' just really because they more spacious but I wouldn't suggest going for the slope view because although the view is lovely in daylight, the snow ploughs come out at night and are very noisy and that’s not what you want after a long day of hard skiing!
But I would definitely recommend it to anyone new or experienced to come to this wonderful resort which is actually in 'El Tartar' not 'Soldeu' although both have some very nice hotels.
The actual ski quality itself was immense it was just completely fun-filled and the wonderful ski instructors are always there to lend a helping hand!

We actually stayed in the Apartments Del Sol which are attached to the Hotel Nordic. The Hotel is fantastic and couldn't be in a better position to the slopes.
They only dissapointing thing for us was that the tour operator had told us the Pool/Gym etc was included - however we were dissapointed to find out that if you stay in the apartments you have to pay a small local charge!!! This was actually 12 euros per adult and 8 Euros per child plus 3 euros each for hat. A family of four would have to pay 52 euros to swim!
That said we had a great time and the rooms/hotel etc was fantastic and we would certainly go back to this hotel again. The food was excellent, drinks were very cheap, facilities great and the entertainment good.
The Ski school is well worth a mention, there was 9 of us in our party and we all attended the ski schools at different levels. Everybody learned to ski and the teachers were of a very high standard. Our children were all in the race at the end of the week and they had the best holiday ever!
We did the Husky trip - what a laugh!!! The tubes slides were a bit dissapointing because after a days skiing they expect you to walk half way up a mountain to slide down it - very tiring!!! All in all we can't wait to go back.

The Nordic is a fairly new hotel with a fabulous position at the bottom of 3 runs, two blue and one black so you can ski in/out. The 4 man chair lift is within 50 m, so less than a minute after you have your skis on you can be up the mountain! The ski hire shop is also just at the back of the hotel and pretty efficient - although struggling on the first day of half term week through sheer pressure of numbers I think.
The hotel rooms are very comfortable with small balconies (ask for a room facing up the slope) with comfortable twin beds plus an easy chair, desk/dressing table and TV. Two good size wardrobes in the 'hall' leading into the bedroom plus coat hanging space made it easy to unpack and keep the inevitable piles of ski gear under control. Nice bathroom - huge mirror over the sink, a bidet as well as loo and a fairly well pressured shower over the bath. If I have to quibble then my main one is that the bath took an age to fill - but there was plenty of hot water so it didn't really matter. Hairdryer provided and the hot rail in the bathroom was good for drying gloves etc.
The hotel has a buffet breakfast and dinner and the food was great - they made a real effort to vary the salad bar nightly and there was usually a regional or specialty selection each evening - smoked fish such as trout/cod/sturgeon one evening and pates etc another. Hot buffet supplemented by freshly cooked fillets of fish, steaks etc. Vegetables not fabulous but hard to keep them perfect on a buffet bar. Very good breakfasts - you need to ski hard to work off the pain au chocolate!
There is a Jacuzzi and a small pool (don't be fooled by the pictures - their photographer has a very wide angle lens!) - all one depth once you are away from the steps (about 4' deep so not great for tiny non swimmers) - watch the tiles around it which are slippery. They ask you to wear a swim hat (3 euros if you don't take your own). Lovely gym (if you had any energy left over), and small steam room. Sauna/massages etc. are available (although we could only book them on one day of the week).
There is also bowling in the basement with a bar alongside plus a bar in the main foyer where everyone gathered après ski. The live music here was ok - a bit loud for my taste.
Sunny slopes, good restaurants on the mountain (not gourmet but very quick and good quality food - not all chips!) and plenty of snow meant we had a great time.
The ski school deserves a special mention - after a chaotic seeming 'sorting out' session all subsequent lessons were efficient and fun - my kids made excellent progress, as did I and there's a good end of week race! Safety was paramount and although I hate getting caught in white out conditions I felt ok making my way down with the instructor. Lift systems were good too - even when the queues were longer at the weekend they can get 2400 people an hour up to the top so you never wait long. they're also reasonably comfortable 4 or 6 man chair lifts - a bonus.
The system is huge and really well linked up so you can explore a big area if you want to. Only downside on the slopes was the number of boarders who seem less in control in the early stages than their skiing equivalents - but at least you can hear them coming!
Travel company was excellent - the transfer time from Toulouse is about 3 hours and it's an easy coach journey. Concept Holidays reps were friendly and helpful but not 'in your face' or pushy about anything and they will ski gude if you want them to. Extra bits to do - my kids enjoyed Husky Driving and another family said inner tube riding (in Canilo) and night time skidoo trips were fun. Enjoy it - we'd certainly go back.

Lovely hotel. Excellent position - can ski straight to chair lift and gondola only a short walk away. Rooms well furnished and clean.
Make sure that you ask for a quiet room as we were right above the evening entertainment and it was noisy if you wanted an early night. The food was excellent and a large choice.
The New Year Gala diner was outstanding. The snow was brilliant and certainly enough runs to keep us Intermediate skiers happy. Ski school was one of the best I have been in. Would certainly recommend.

The hotel was very clean and the resturant manager was charming, most efficient and helpful as were the rest of his staff. The reception were also very helpful but the bar staff were indifferent.
The quality of the food was generally quite poor, with little variety, although there was plently of it and no restrictions on the amount you can eat from the buffet.
The hotel is good for families as children are made to feel very welcome.
Outside the pre paid meals in the resturant, everything in the hotel was quite expensive and the bar meals were also very poor.
The rooms were very warm but could be quite noisy at night so ask for a room at the top of the hotel!
The swimming pool was very disappointing as it was so small. It looks quite large in the brochure!
There is a games room in the bottom of the hotel which is great for kids wanting a game of pool in the evenings.
