An excellent venue for a New Year break. We had snow for a day which gave the place an extra christmassy feel .T American hotel was value for money and the room was spacious, clean and the staff were very helpful.
The position of the hotel was very central whilst not in the notorious "red light" area it was positioned in a square full of bars, good restaurants and within easy walking distance of the cultural and colourful sides of the city. Amsterdam is one of the more pricey European cities for dining and drinking but there is plenty to do and see for everyone; however, I personally can think of many other cities that can offer more for the "family " break.
We stayed for four nights and didn’t even scratch the surface of Amsterdam it is definitely well worth a visit. Last time we visited we stayed at the Ibis hotel which was next to the central station, and this was a good budget hotel, but remember when booking to specify the ibis central as there are several in the city. However for some luxury and a great restaurant the American Hotel is the place.

What a place for a short break. The Crowne Plaza is a centre hotel art nouveau classic dating back to the early 1900s. Very American in service but professional and courteous throughout, with a famous Grand Cafe cocktail bar . Friday eating out, choose the Supper Club, booking essential for a fabulous evening of fine food and entertainment.
Saturday, shopping in the Jordaan Area - fabulous boutiques and sushi bars for lunch and Brown cafes for beer (Gollem on Raamsteeg). In the late afternoon, got to be the Van Gogh Museum followed by shower / shave to hit the Indonesian food experience. Tempo Doeloe, fabulous spicy food! Then out around the many bars to cool off .
Sunday has to be the Artis Zoo via the Canal Bus, take it easy for a couple of hours, back to the hotel for a quick coffee/ sandwich, very nice and cosmo! Afternoon into the coffee shops for a particular kind of smoke for the long journey home (don’t get too wrapped up in smoking, you'll miss your return flight home, but you'll be happy for the experience!)
