The Catamaran is set in nice grounds overlooking Mission Bay, the hotel is split into two with the suites backing directly onto the bay. They come with either balcony or patio and it was fantastic sitting out there 1st thing in the morning sipping a coffee, there is also a tower block which didn't look quite as appealing.
The Catamaran has a tropical theme, which is obvious as soon as you enter the reception, which has a very nice water feature running through the middle of it. There was a nice bar and restaurant on the premises and a nice pool and gym area.
The rooms themselves were very spacious although the bathrooms were a little dated but the location more than made up for that. On Friday evenings there was a paddle steamer the 'Bahia Belle' which was free to hotel guests that made its way across the bay to the hotels sister property The Bahia Hotel and back again which took around 40 minutes and there was a bar and even entertainment on board.
Although we were told not to expect too much in the way of public transport, we found it adequate and there was a bus stop outside the hotel where you could catch the bus to the San Diego transit centre. From there you could hop on the 'S.D. Trolley' into the city centre (about 20 mins in all) or you could stay on the trolley and go to the end of the line which is San Ysidro. From where you can walk through passport control over the bridge and into Tijuana, Mexico. (about an hour in all from the hotel).
We enjoyed everything about San Diego, beautiful coastline, nice city, nice people and something for everyone including good shopping, good restaurants and bars, Sea World which is well worth a visit as is Old Town.
We hope to go back one day and wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Catamaran again.
