Turn the clock back 30 plus years and you have Greece as you imagined. Time has not moved on the island of Halki where many of the local don’t speak English although the few involved with tourism have learnt.
Go to one of the tavernas near the harbour, the only places to go in the evening, and you will be welcomed as a friend. If you like fish you will be in your element as it is really freshly caught in the morning. There are 2 small bars if you are desperate but we preferred to do our drinking in the tavernas over a long meal. The Sofia Apartments are on a slight hill but terraces with a wonderful panoramic view of the harbour. Our room had a four poster bed which was very romantic.
They are well equipped and even had a mini oven. 12 minutes walk away is the lovely Pondamos beach. If you enjoy a village atmosphere, a very slow pace of life and don’t want luxuries we can recommend it here. A lazy holiday but if you like walking you can explore some part of the island although much of it is inaccessible except by boat. Remember to take a torch!!
We had a fantastic time although it was a long journey as after the flight you have to get a ferry from Rhodes.

The most wonderful place in the world. Sheer relaxation sitting on the balcony after the kids have gone to sleep. Memories that will never be lost.
The journey down to the bakery and then delicious breakfasts on our fantastic terrace. The safe and friendly beach with sun and sea respite provided in Nick's Taverna at lunchtimes.
A place that I really feel is safe for children. The newest member of our family is coming to Halki this year (my youngest foster sun). I just know he will thrive and blossom during this 2 week break.
The food is excellent in all Tavernas, the ice cream and cakes at the Parrot Cafe are out of this world.
The best view is watching the Lane Lines ferries from Athens disembark in this tiny harbour. Very dramatic.
