Amazing
9 / 10
Aug 2011, ChrisHR

I am 16 years old and travelled with my family to this hotel. I have been twice before and everytime its been truly amazing!
The hotel itself is cleaned every morning before you wake up by the maids and every single item inside the hotel is made spotless.
The breakfast is as you'd expect from a spanish hotel all you can eat. Bacon, eggs (scrambled, hard boiled, fried) beans, sausages, tomatoes, cereals, special dietry milks, breads, toasters, jam, butter and cakes... lots of cakes!
Lunch is provided for Full Board customers and looked very nice although we never had it...
Dinner has a different theme every night of the week (mexican, spanish, fish, italian, ENGLISH SUNDAY DINNER! ) and the food is cooked to an amazing standard! There is a kids food area that serves kid safe food like nuggets and chips etc... Again this is all you can eat, you only pay for the drinks.
Entertainment runs through the day from 11:30am (approx) until 12 - midnight and has a wide variety of activities (for adults and children) and shows. Evening shows start at 10:30pm. All activity staff speak very good English, French, German and other languages aside from Spanish and are VERY friendly with both kids and parents. There is also a kids club run by first choice which consists of English staff to entertain and watch over your children day and night. This might come in handy when visiting the 6th floor of the hotel (the roof) which is an adults only area (18+) fitted with a pool, jacusi, massage area and beauty treatment.
The staff are all friendly although some are very strict about what you do in the hotel, for example, feet on table inside or outside is not allowedand nor is leaning or sitting on the tables. If the pool tables do not release the balls and you ask for assistance from the bar staff, some are okay and release the balls for you, but others tend to give you dead eyes and question whether or not you actually put the money in there in the first place.
Hotel room size is good for two adults/two adults and two young children. (If travelling with 2 adults and 2 teens I would STRONGLY recommend 2 rooms. Also, if you want to get to sleep before half 12, request a room on the other side of the hotel facing away from the entertainment stage. The rooms are cleaned and stocks replenished every day at a time that suits you, usually clean by 12pm latest.
The pools are great for children and adults, however if you are wanting to do some serious lengths, expect some bumping into others if you are doing it at peak times (10am while 4pm approx). Sunbeds are hard to get if you dont run for them in the morning although its not impossible as sunbeds are left as families go to the many attractions Salou has to offer which are all approx 10 mins away from the hotel (Portaventura theme park, aquopolis, the beach etc...)
Overall was a great stay and would love to go for a 4th time!

  • Advice: Visit all that Salou has to offer as well as taking some time out at the hotel.

We arrived on Friday 24th Sept after a good flight from Birmingham. The room we were allocated was a good size and well furnished as well as being spotlessly clean. However we soon discovered that the sun did not shine on the balcony at any time of the day, making the room gfloomy and not very warm despite the outside temperature being 24 degrees. After a couple of days we asked our holiday rep. if we could be given a different room. We were then put on a waiting list for a room change. So, on Monday evening we asked at reception and were told to come to reception on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday morning we were allocated a room overlooking the pool but were warned that it could be noisy. This room enjoyed sun each morning until 1-00 p.m. Bliss!!! After this we enjoyed a wonderful holiday with excellent food and a spotlessly clean room. Towels were changed every day whether used or not. The rest of the hotel was also very clean. Yes, it was a bit noisy but not too bad and it didn`t bother us. This is essentially a very good family hotel with efficient and friendly staff and we enjoyed a brilliant holiday and would definitely go back. We would also recommend it to anyone.

Just back from a week in Salou. Stayed in this hotel with my boyfriend (mid 20's couple) in self catering apt. The hotel was huge, massive reception area and bar area aswell. The reception staff were not as bad as other reviews say. They weren't the most friendly of people but they answered any questions we had. Beds & towels were changed everyday. The apt was very big aswell, much bigger than a normal self catering apt and the kitchenette was very well equipped. I would def return to this hotel & resort. There is loads to do in Salou for every age.

Great hotel!

Just returned after 10 days at the Dorada Palace. We had a great time and couldn't fault the hotel at all. The public areas were kept immaculate with the cleaning staff working really hard to keep things spotless. Our rooms were cleaned daily and fresh towels provided each day. The self service buffet was very good, with something to suit everyones taste buds. The selection of food for kids included the normal nuggets and pizza but also included different types of pasta and pieces of chicken.
The entertainment was better than the normal for Spain and the hotel Anamacion team kept kids and adults happy all day, and most of the night. The team of Angel, Adrian, Benji and Carmen were absolute stars and put the on site First Choice reps to shame.
The price of the food and drink in the hotel was slightly dearer than in most of the pubs, but 2.70 euros for a large beer is cheaper than the UK.
The resort itself was fairly quiet but still plenty going on to keep everyone happy. There are a number of Irish pubs spread around the resort with live music on most nights. We found these bars lively to say the least - I'll leave it at that so not to offend anyone. The price of beer in the resort was 2 euros a pint with many bars having happy hours at different times. The wine was also very reasonable and buying a bottle was usually good value.
We spent a day at Port Aventura which is only 15 mins walk from the Dorada Palace. Try and buy tickets from the pub/restaurant owners. A day pass is 44 euros - we paid 45 euros 3 tickets. Ask around its worth it.
Overall a good holiday and we would return to the Dorada Palace. Don't let the miserable reception staff put you off, the rest of the staff are brilliant and go out of their way to give you a great holidat experience.

Nice Hotel, but not a 4 star

A nice clean hotel, but as this was our second visit in four years we found that standards have dropped since our last holiday in 2005. Our room was large and the beds comfortable. Our room 145, overlooked a roundabout on a busy road which made it very noisy, but once the window was closed the sound was minimal apart from when the disco kicked out at 4am. The toilet and shower facilities excellent, although I do think that the shower needs a hand rail fitting as the bath is very slippy. The pool area very clean and in October there were plenty of sunbeds, with no need to join the morning rush. The restaurant food was on the whole OK, but certainly not 4* although on a couple of occasions I found that the pork was not cooked and had blood in the centre. The hotel expects gentlemen to wear trousers and a shirt in the restaurant, but doesn't enforce this, subsequently men turning up in shorts and flipflops for evening meal. When I questioned this with the Maitre De the excuse he gave was that they were too busy. Not acceptable I'm afraid. Yes, the staff are rude and abrupt. Not a bad hotel, but I don't think we shall return.

The hotel was very impressive - immaculately clean with what appeared to be good facilities. The reception staff and other public facing staff did not seem to know the value of a smile nor did they seem to realise that they were there for us the paying customers! We were in self catering accommodation which was comfortable and fairly spacious but wasn't well equipped - draining spaghetti or rice quite difficult without a colander for example.
There were three pools - all of which closed at 6.00pm and heaven help anyone who went in for a dip after that - this was understandable with the main (family) pool which had a lifeguard on duty, the pool area was also used for the evening's entertainment: not so with the others, I don't know why their hours could not have been extended as the sun was still shining and it would have been relaxing to have lain out for a while (after all we were on holiday!!)
Evening entertainment was from 9.00pm - midnight - at 1.00am all the balcony lights were switched off from a central location (no control from your room) and if you were out chatting quietly (and I mean quietly) on balcony after that time then you were scolded!!
We were even giving a warning about noise that had taken place when we weren't even in the hotel - nobody was interested in facts - as far as they were concerned we'd done it and that was that - made us very paranoid for the rest of our stay!
It's such a shame that the customer experience wasn't more of a priority as this could have been a first rate holiday.

Lovely Hotel, Awful Staff
3 / 10

The hotel itself is quite new, clean and well maintained. The pool is lovely and the entertainment is ok. There is a problem though ... the staff. The reception staff look at you like dirt and are about as friendly as a fist in the face. Your experience of spanish hospitality starts when you check in and one of the front desk charmers states "You Need to Pay 100 Euros Cash !" Very welcoming after along journey. A deposit for a pre paid self catering apartment ????? I have travelled fairly widely and its the first time I have come across this. I made the mistake of asking one evening whether WiFi access was available in the rooms (not unreasonable as it seems to be available pretty much everywhere these days, my holiday to a fairly remote area of Kos earlier in the year provided it free of charge). Unfortunately the helpful chappie behind the desk was busy reading his newspaper when I approached and decided he was not going to look up until he was good and ready. I politely enquired about WiFi access to which he barked No ! and immediately looked down at his paper again. Lovely !! Even though we paid extra for a late check out (6pm), our room key was disabled at 10.00am and when I eventually made it to the front of the long reception queue and explained the situation, my key was snatched off me updated on the computer and thrust back, no explanation and no apology (not that at this stage I was expecting anything more). Check out is equally as bad as check in as they radio to one of their colleagues who goes to check your room before they will return your deposit. Be warned they are in no hurry to do this so don't leave it until the last minute to check out. Also they charge you 1.50 euros to look after your cases, bit picky perhaps as its not a fortune but I have never been charged for this anywhere before. To have a TV remote control you have to pay a deposit, to get a safe deposit box key not only do you have to pay for the time you need it, but again they want a deposit. Bar staff, with the exception of one, were the most miserable bunch I have ever seen. I appreciate that bar work is hard and not particularly enjoyable but they are dealing with people trying to enjoy their holiday, would it kill them to crack a smile occasionally. In the restaurant drinks are not included in the price of the meal, fair enough I guess, but wine is only available by the bottle so if there is only one of your party on wine then make sure they are pretty thirsty as you will be paying 10 Euros for a 4 euro bottle of wine. Whilst the hotel is only about 10 minutes walk from the beach, you need to cross some pretty busy main roads to get there so take care as stopping at red lights seems to be optional for some drivers. Salou itself is nice, the beach is beautiful and I have to say the weather for October was glorious. The kids club reps seemed excellent (they work for First Choice) and the children loved them. On the whole, would I go back to Salou .... yes, would I stay again at the Costa Dorada Palace ? Not if they paid me !
