We have just returned from 2 weeks at the moonlight.it is a small traditional greek hotel. Rooms a bit basic and on the small side but very cean.breakfast also basic contiental, but plenty of it. Stallis is about 1 mile from malia but you do sometimes get groups of chavs racing through on quad bikes.the hotel accross the road has a decent size pool with loungers which cost about 5 .4 euros for 2 beds with 1 umbrella . A word of warning though air con + fridge + safe will cost you 150 euroes for 2 weeks which has to be paid up front but as the rooms are quite small we were glad of the air con at 40 euros a week.

we decided to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary on our favourite holiday isle, crete, and as a result picked out the moonlight hotel, what a great choice!!from the moment we arrived we were made welcome by george and his wonderful staff. The rooms were comfortable, clean and all have nice views, they are cleaned every day to a high standard.George even provided us with a surprise wedding day gift of cretan wine in a beautiful basket with flowers from their garden. The moonlight is only 50 yards from stalis beach and you have the full use of the Ariadne Beach hotel pool and facilities which is directly opposite the moonlight. We will be returning in 2009 and look forward to meeting up again with the family at the moonlight, breakfast is served either inside or out on the veranda , weather permitting, its always sunny!!it consists of fresh fruit, cretan honey, yoghurt, cereal, toast, coffee, etc.
We have never written a review before about our holiday but on this occasion couldn,t resist due to the quality we enjoyed.

The advertised description of the Moonlight is astonishingly inaccurate. It speaks of peace and quiet, cosiness and culture not to mention a sea view. Expect none, the hotel is losing its struggle to pass itself off as ‘quiet’ and ‘cosy’ in the midst of engulfing, tasteless development.
It is located on the landward side of the very busy front road linking Malia with Hersonissos. The road is fully developed along its length with mass market hotels, bars, ‘English’ pubs, restaurants, shops and clubs such that the two towns merge. There is a constant flow of many hundreds of buses, cars, lorries and particularly speeding quad bikes and motorbikes. It is noisy and dangerous to walk along (no pavements so the traffic weaves between pedestrians).
Ironically, it is the hotel’s own bar with its loud, 17 speaker outdoor music system playing the same CDs into the small hours which ensures no peace, quiet or sleep. Only the rooms towards the rear escape, but they can suffer noise from the by-pass, (frequent ambulances) so keep the windows closed (in summer you’ll need the air conditioning – but see below).
References to ‘the nearby café’ and ‘the nearby restaurant’ imply only one of each, and the adjective ‘cosy’ reinforces this notion of a simple, peaceful and quiet location. Nothing could be further from the truth. With pubs such as the ‘Rovers Return’ and the ‘The Rose and Crown’ closer than the beach (a ‘stones throw’ away) there isn't any peace, quiet or cosiness and forget ‘culture’.
From the sun terrace there are no ‘marvellous panoramic views of the sea’, only the busy road and the back of the Ariadne Beach hotel opposite stretch before you, and they are certainly far from ‘breathtaking’. You’d have to ‘eat breakfast’ in another hotel altogether to 'see the sun rising over the seas’ and to escape the bland tinned peaches, cornflakes and toast every morning.
Rooms are basic and clean but the hotel service fell short of reasonable expectation; with frequently stained and torn laundry, faulty plumbing, occasional lack of hot water and extortionate charges for (leaking) air conditioning, a fridge and a security box (expect to pay £200 for 2 rooms for a fortnight).
You’ll need a car to escape, but driving in Crete can be aggressive and crashes abound . In the end we found only one good beach nearby, turn right out of the hotel, head for Malia’s ‘Famous Beach’ but don’t stop, there's a beautiful sandy beach with no surrounding development 400 yds further on.

What a lovely hotel. Small but lovely. Rooms very clean, breakfast continental but a lot of choice (a few boilded eggs would not go amiss though). The owners George and his mother could not do enough for you and were very friendly and joined you at the bar every evening. Thanks a million to Duchan, the barman. Absolutely brilliant, a good laugh, very attentive and makes a mean mojito. I hope he is there when we visit again as I am sure we will. Made lots of friends and had a great laugh round the bar. Would recommend the Moonlight and will definitely go there again. Thanks George and family and Duchan for making our stay a good one. Did not want to come home.

We booked a last minute deal through Thompson lates, asking for a quiet restful hotel in which I could swim and read novels. They placed us in Malia! After I complained, they moved us to the Moonlight, where the owner was very humble about how it was only a two star and not as nice as the hotel we had booked. However, two star or otherwise, it was clean, quiet, with comfy beds, and free use of the lovely swimming pool at the hotel opposite, which faces out over the beach. You do have to pay a couple of euros per day to use their sunbeds at the hotel, but it was well worth it.
I did not know in advance, but Malia is an 18-30 type drinking resort, with buzzing music and the culture that goes with that. If you like drinking and clubbing all night you will like Malia, if (like us) you hate that, you will hate Malia by night. It is a resort aimed at young British holiday-makers. This meant that the hotels in Malia all have a penalty charge list up on the wall, listing the costs for all the damaged you might make, from dirtying the white walls, to losing towels, to setting off the fire hydrants.
This hotel is just out of Malia into the neighbouring village of Stalis. I was so relieved to find the Moonlight did not have a penalty list, or dance music playing all night, or couples audibly arguing or copulating in the rooms adjacent, that I could forgive the room being a little dated in appearance, and a little smaller. What there was included a lovely little bar, where you could people-watch, proximity to nice beaches, shops, carhire and supermarkets. At it was low season it cost us very little to hire a car for 3 days and explore the island. Changing hotels only moved us about a mile, and took two days but it turned what seemed like it was going to be a "holiday from hell" into a very pleasant short break.

We paid £250 for 10 days in the Moonlight Hotel in the middle of July. Its decent enough, though basic - you pay for what you get though. The location is about 20 minutes walk from Malia and despite other reviews mentioning this, I never heard any loud music at night....only the chicadas rattling. The roads are dangerous (this is not the fault of the hotel though) as there are loads of bl==dy idiots riding mopeds and quads and not looking where they were going. I saw two (English) wallies nearly get splattered on their mopeds so if staying in this area you do need to have your wits about you.
Pros: Friendly staff who were very helpful. Free breakfast every morning. Maid service daily. George who works at the bar will play you at Pro Evo soccer if you are so inclined.
Cons: 'double' beds are just two singles pushed together. The shower cubicle is tiny, and the curtain sticks to you every time you need to use it (in my case at least 2x a day as it was so hot over there).
All in all it was ok, but I think next time I would go for a hotel with a larger shower. If you stay here you won't go far wrong though....I have no real complaints about the place.
