We've just returned from a 2 week...

We've just returned from a 2 week stay at the mythos aparts. I can honestly say its been one of the best holidays we,ve had. The apartments were clean, well mantained & comfortable. Although i would say the kitchen area is very small and i dont think you'd be able to cook an evening meal but its ample to prepare breakfast or a midday snack. The owner panos is friendly, helpful and is available at anytime should you need anything. As in all the reviews the aparts are located on a fairly steep hill and probably not suitable for elderly holiday makers. However the walk is only about 5-10mins from the main square. The aparts position unfortunately makes it not accessible for the transfer coach to drive up to so the coach drops you in the main square and panos meets you to take your luggage in his van to the apartments. The pool area at the mythos looks smaller in photos than actually is. Although in high season if you are not an early riser you may be found searching for a sunbed. The food at the pool bar are of generous portions and very reasonably priced. We can recommend trying one of georgias full english breakfasts which are served with toast, orange juice and tea/coffee. Out in the resort itself you'll find its a very popular scandanavian resort so if you expect to find english dishes on the menu you'll be dissapointed. Nearly all the restaraunts have a fine selection of greek and local cusine though. There is a very good chinese restaraunt along the main road (bottom of hill turn right 400yrds) the food was good and a nice price for a family of 6. Out of the aparts turn right going uphill will bring you to restaraunts with wonderful views recommend viglis for the best view and decent food, watching the sunset from viglis top floor is something not to be missed make sure you take your camera. The astrea restaraunt is shortly before viglis and a great night out for a more traditional greek eve (mon, wed, fri only) with dancers, music and audience participation most welcome, i must say at this point be prepared for an alcoholic feast of an evening as the staff are well renown for constantly coming round with shots of raki, ouzo, brandy and anything else with an alcoholic content so be prepared if you leave a shot glass empty it'll soon be refilled. If you go in season air con is a must, the 2 weeks we were there the temp ranged from 36c-42c. The excursions with the tour company were very expensive and you can do most of the trips on offer much cheaper by either a very good local bus service or by the little train company suituated in the main square at the foot of the steps. All in all we had a very enjoyable 1st visit to crete and the mythos being small and friendly made it easy to make friends with other holidaymakers that were staying there. If you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday in friendly surroundings look no further. We would definately visit again.

Apartments were clean and well...

Jun 2008, Mrs M Barrows

Apartments were clean and well maintained with daily maid service, barr Sunday. The pool area was clean although not many sunbeds or space for children to play. However would suggest you go the beach as the pool area gets too hot, with no breeze even in May. Location was in the old town of Platanias which was a lovely setting, quieter but only a 5 min walk to the main street where there was a wide choice of bars, restuarants, supermarkets and shops. There is crazy golf, trampolines, motorised cars areas etc for younger children . Although the Mythos is uphill from the main road (the owner collects your cases at the bottom of the hill in his van) it is not a killer walking uphill to the apts, saw plently of older people walking up and down daily. There is many restuarants in the old town and would recommend Panorama and cosmos, although Cosmos is a bit more expensive. The tour operator trips are very expensive and you can book similar trips in the town for half the price. A trip to Elafonisi beach is well recommended, it is stunning and the local buses also go there. You can also visit Chania, the old capital of Crete by local bus for a couple of euros. There is plenty of shopping there, especially for leather goods and is a lovely place to sit around the harbour area on an evening people watching. In Chania go to Tamans to eat, even the locals recommend it, suggest you order lots of starters rather than a main course as its a good way to sample the local foods and the portions are good, you wont go hungry. A good holiday and would go back.

The 70 metre hill was a killer, we are in our 30's and it did us in, but after all that lovely greek food a little exercise was what was needed! Apart from that, the apartment was spacious and clean, maid service 6 times a week and very quiet. Panos the owner very friendly and helpful, food good and the pool very clean, overall the holiday was excellent value for money. We will definitely visit again. Not for the faint hearted, old people, people with mobility problems or perpetual moaners!

I would not recommend the Mythos...
1 / 10
Dec 2006, christiaan

I would not recommend the Mythos apartments as a place to stay.
We suffered greatly because of the weather at the time, constant rain etc, what we did not expect was to have rain coming in from both front and back door to the apartment, constantly having to soak water up with towels, others suffered from rain coming through the ceiling.
The apartment itself was poorly maintained which was evident from the state of the toilet/bathroom. The bedroom linen was old and tatty, the filling from bed covers was falling out, torn sheets on the bed!
The kitchen area was very small and dark, to try and cook was a problem with what was provided. Outlook from the balcony included a scrap car directly below.
The pool was never cleaned and was very small, not safe for children to play at pool side, as the room from beds to pool was a matter of inches.
The attitude of the manager was poor and bordered on being rude. Thomsons have received a long letter listing our observations and a reply was received, the tone being, you get what you pay for.
So if you want a cheap holiday in disgusting surroundings, choose the Mythos Apartments in Platanes in Crete, you won’t be disappointed. Our highlight of our particular stay...was leaving.
