me and my wife have just returned from crete it was great the hotel was fantastic the staff could not do more to make your stay feel great. the room was cleaned every day and the sheets were changed every other day (there is a charge for air con of €40 per week which we did not get ) all staff are very freindly .thomsons are sadly not renewing the contract with them BIG MISTAKE!!!!!! it is only 5 mins walk from malias old town where you will find the best food in malia would recomend a visit to toto lotto for a romantic meal great prices and then its a 5 min walk down to the main strip whitch is full of pissed kids thinking they are it .but stalis is only a 15 min walk (just walk down the strip and turn left at mc d"s much better for familys and more mature people we are only in our 30"s but not into expencive bars and clubs.) back to the hotel the rep for 2009 has got very little time for people that are not in big groups as she did no welcome meet as such plus she gives you the impression that repping is not what she thought it was going to be. if ya want to do any trips like kanossos or spinalonga the ask the hotel staff they will gladly tell you a way of getting there for a fraction of the price . i would recommend that aparts as the staff are the best thanks for a great time hope to see you again!!!!!!! i must mention that there is a deposit of €50 pp on arrivel due to kids that cant handle the drink and causeing damage the the aparts(thomson forget to tell ya before you go but when you see the aparts you will understand why as it is a beautiful place you get the money back on day of departure.) dont let the dep put you of as the customer service is second to none!!!!!!!!!
Cheap, clean and recommended

I was very impressed with the Kristalli apartments! I paid approx £120 for a week (4 bedroom) direct to Thomson and booked an Easyjet flight myself. Upon arrival you have to pay €50 deposit per person....and €40 for a weeks worth of air conditioning unless you want to sweat it out! The rooms are huge! We had 3 balconies as well. Lovely walk-in shower and powerful water jets. We ate out every night which was reasonable. There is a gorgeous Traverna (traditional Greek) restaurant square hidden away! Ask the bar staff where it is.......We unfortunately only found it on the last night! :( The barman, Mikos, was extremely friendly and spoke good English. The management are onsite and looks like a family run business. The Thomson Rep never spoke to us once and we were not impressed with Thomson Reps throughout the holiday. They appear useless! Walking down the strip of bars after 8pm is quite frustrating. The law stipulates that the bar workers are NOT allowed into the street and have to call for you to come in from their bar's steps. We found that this was often not the case and you had to say NO THANKS at least 4 times before these idiots went away!! The only complaint about the place was these bar staff trying to get you in their clubs! We rented a 250CC buggy and explored the surrounding towns and villages. €70 for 2 days with full insurance from MOTOR FUN. HIGHLY recommended!!!! Dont sit by the pool all day when you can go up the mountains and explore the gorgeous untouched villages and the many, many olive groves! After many holidays in Spain and the Balearics I am now converted to Crete!!! Malia is great....but the Kristalli apartments are a must!!!!
Great Hotel

8 of us travelled to Malia at the end of August 2008. On arrival we were split up into 2 rooms of 4 and placed in 2 different blocks which was a bit annoying but not really a big deal! The rooms were massive! Having stayed in very cramped accommodation in Gran Canaria the year before we were expecting similar but these were great. The staff were very nice but as others have said they don't stand for any nonsense at night! The food is good and resonably priced and we ate at the poolbar almost every night! The pool was amazing although the day we arrived the water had just been changed and it was FREEZING! It is cleaned every night and the surrounding area is always tidy! There was also a very friendly waitress who worked during the day who would bring you drinks or just stay and chat! Obviously if you are travelling at peak season you're bound to find lots of teenagers...that's to be expected in a clubbing resort! Stay away if you have young children or are older but I'd think that would be pretty obvious anyway! It's about a 10 minute walk to the main strip but personally I'd rather have stayed a bit out that be above bars and clubs open til 6am! Overall I thought the hotel was fab and would definitely go back there!
Kristalli studios amazing!!

The Kristalli Apartments were fantastic, great during the day as it was quiet but enougth people by the pool to still have a laugh, the nightlife was fantastic wasnt to far of a walk but enough so you didnt get disturbed in the evening. The rooms were fantastic, clean and spacious we stayed in the new block and the rooms were massive we even had two balconies unlike the rooms opposite. The food and drinks were reasonable prices and the food was fantastic couldnt fault it at all, i would reccomend the fry up in the morning absolutley fantastic even better than anywhere here. The staff are friendly and the family that run it are an asset to the hotel, they didnt let people get away with any funny business (if you get me) For anyone going say hi to the staff for us from the cats in 206 haha!! guarenteed a brilliant clean stay at this hotel!
Very average

I went with Thomson for a week in May with 2 babies and my other half. Upon arrival, the cots were filthy. The mesh was ripped. There is no lift and no assistance. The owner Maria told me that it was not "her problem". She then comes around on the day of checkout (at 10am) to knock on doors to remind people that checkout is in half an hour!!! Rooms very basic. Just a kettle, fridge door was broken. Cutlery in short supply. Lack of bedding. Our lights were not working either. Location was on a hill so not suitable for pushchairs. Swimming pool was not clean either and bedding and rooms not cleaned as stated by owner. Location good in terms of it being quiet and away from the main strip of clubs. Supermarket and bakery very close by. Restaurants and amenities only 10 mins walk away. You can also get a bus to Knossos and Aghios Nicklos instead of being ripped off by the tour operators. Would go back to Malia but not with Kristalli apartments.
Nice Hotel
from carly2008
I went to this hotel in october 2006, the appartments were clean and spacious and ours over looked the pool which was nice, the pool area is not massive but its big enough. The pool side snack bar sells food at a very resnoble price and has lots to offer like full breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, steak any thing you fancy, the drinks a cheap aswell and this stays open till you decide to leave, the staff are really freindly and join in on the fun. the hotel is about 10 minutes from all the main bars and nightclubs and 20 minutes to the beach but there are shops bars and resturants on the way. But at least you can get a good nites sleep been a little out of it. i would defanatly return to these apartments. i would recomend to: young couples and groups in high off season, but out of season anyone.
would definatley recommend

The only bad thing about Kristalli was that we were asked to pay a 50euro deposit when we arrived which as a group of young people ruined our budgets a bit because we didn't know about it before arriving. We were in the old block which was clean but not very spacious and the bathroom wasn't very good. There wasn't a holder for the shower head so you had to hold it yourself while you washed which was difficult when washing your hair! The staff were lovely really friendly and the snack bar had a good choice of food on offer all day at reasonable prices. enough entertainment even in off peak months and a nice pool area. About a 10 minute walk from the main strip and although it wasn't a scenic nice walk it was nice to be out of it. we noticed that alot of the other appartments were right on the strip and this can be really loud until early in the morning. the only noise thst disturbed us was the occasional lorry passing but that's because our room backed onto the road. the only thing i could complain about was out of the hotels control. the weather. we had a couple of storms which caused power cuts but the staff dealt with it brilliantly and made sure we were all alright and in the light. would definatley recommend!
Loved Kristalli - Hated Mallia
from fraserbrook
My Husband and I have just got back from Malia. Have to say the accomodation at Kristalli appartments was superb - one of the best self-catering we have ever stayed in. It was very clean and the staff there were very nice and friendly. We stayed in the new appartments which were very roomy but the old ones from the outside looked very small. The staff were very quick to clamp down on horseplay between some young people which had the potential to get out of hand and spoil other peoples holidaying. They have a zero tolerance philosophy. However the town of Malia had very little to offer in the way of evening entertainment if you are above the age of 30 - it's full of clubs and bars which play types of music that we over the age of 40 could not even contemplate being in the vicinity of. Apparently the Mayor is trying to encourage more older people and families here but they have not got it right yet.
Great Place

We have stayed at the Kristalli on five occasions, and are going again in September 2007. We have been going to Crete since 1997. We used to stay in Ag Nik, but changed to Malia because there is a lot more going on. The problem with Malia, is that from June to August, it caters for the Club 18-30 crowd. Anyone looking for a quiet time should avoid it like the plague. All the accomodations in Malia are rammed with young brits, looking for a good time. May, September, and October are far quieter. Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of the younger element there in these months, but they confine themselves to the beach road at night, and sleep all day. We normally travel in a group whose age ranges from 13 to 70. The Kristalli is one of the best accommodations we have stayed in, and the greek owners and their english staff, make everyone feel extremely welcome. It would be extremely unfair to criticise Kristalli for the behaviour of their guests, as they have no control over who is booked in there. That is down to Thomson, and Escapades (Mytravel), who market Malia in the same vein as Faliraki in Rhodes, (we've all seen Rep's Uncovered on the telly). Anyone who has stayed at the Kristalli early or late in the season, will testify to the great place it really is. I'm sorry if anyone has had a bad experience, but the reality is that you need to think about where your going, and at what time, if you want to avoid having to write bad reviews.
honest review

We visited the kristalli in June and to be honest upon arrival we were impressed. However when we were allocated our room number 8 in the old block the image shattered. We were to find out this was the smallest room in the whole accommodation the hotel owner even agreed and said small is good for couples! If you are placed in the new block or any other room except 8 then you will be happy. Providing you do not complain about anything as they do not welcome that. Our complaint was the start of more to come. Maybe we were just unlucky perhaps? If you want a holiday when you will never have a moment to yourself then go here. We were told this was in the old town i.e. quiet in day and you could party at night. That is exactly what we wanted. The kristalli itself has nice grounds but the fact they share their facilities with escapades and don’t have to inform you only added to our poor experience. If you stay in any other room other then room 8 and never batter an eyelid or complain about anything then you will have a great time. We didn’t moan about everything far from! But when our bathroom smelt of urine and sick from the above appt constantly and we couldn’t be moved, you would be angry! We aren’t one of these couples who complain about anything and everything but we feel this holiday was very poor and sold with misconception. The grounds itself are nice and as long as you are placed in the new block then you will be very happy. We believe due to complaining upon arrival that it started us on bad footing for the rest. Young and lively accommodation only.
Myself and 3 other of my girlfriends went to Malia this summer and stayed at Kristalli for a week. Nico George and Yanis were all lovely staff and made you feel like you were at home. The rooms were cleaned everyday and the food there was gorgeous! Kristalli is the perfect... more
