This was our 2nd visit to Petra, the prewvious one in 2005. I was a little apprehensive after reading the reviews for 2008, but found they bore no relation to what I experienced. The apartments were basic but clean and the cleaners never stopped working. There are plenty of... more

The best holiday i've ever been on! so would find it hard to rate the accomodation too low, at the same time i find it hard to rate it any higher than 8* this is purely because of one reason; a large amount of money was "misplaced" in our apartment. we have no explanation... more

up the hill
These apartments are on a steep hillside above Hersonissos bay. You dont need to worry that you have to keep walking up the hill as there are lots of traditional tavernas and restaurants in the traditional villages along the road from the Petra village. Come out of the apartments and turn left and stroll for 2 minutes to the nearest mini supermarket and bakery ( run by 2 English ladies),continue on for another minuteand you come to the first lot of bars shops restaurants etc. Another 5 minutes and you reach the centre of the village. Dont get the idea though that this place is lively it isnt.It is a lovely quiet place to eat or have a drink with no rowdiness at all.The local people were really friendly always willing to chat but not overbearing. One day we (55 and 57) walked the whole way through Koutouloufari,Piscopiano, and into Old Hersonissos in about half an hour.Another day we walked down the hill in about 10 mins spent some time at the harbour and then walked back up the hill, that took a bit longer. The apartments were just as described. They were clean and friendly. The shower had a curtain and the room had a kettle and a toaster. Basic but what else do you need.? If I had to criticise it would be the lack of space round the pool and also the lack of sunshades. We ate here twice....the first time we had a burger which was fine ,the second time I asked for a bacon club sandwich. when it arrived it was cheese and a tiny piece of bacon when I pointed this out I was told all the sandwiches have cheese in them As I dont eat cheese I was a bit annoyed .Any way we just went off and ate in a lovely place called Fabrica . We also went to Knossos with the tour company (Thomson) dont make the mistake it would have been better to get a taxi and a guide when we got there . Anyway all in all go to these apartments if you want a quiet relaxing break in friendly company.
Petra Apartments
My wife and I booked Petra Apartments at short notice through Thomson travel agency shop in our local High Street. We thought we had made our requirement clear - a quiet out of the way spot. Unfortunately the Hersonissos area is more like Blackpool or Southend! The apartments themselves are basic but satisfactory. Bed sheets were changed mid-week, towels twice during the week and the helpful staff and imaginative layout of the complex of apartments meant that we were not overlooked nor did we overlook others. The view down the hillside to the coast was pleasant, the building work going on on the adjacent plot was not. The swimming pool was well used by ourselves and the other guests of the complex and the bar seemed to be open from breakfast time to the early hours. A good selection of tavernas in the local village gives plenty of choice off site. By renting a vehicle we were able to get further east along the coast to less crouded areas which was a pleasant relief after the commercialism of the local area. We would not visit this area of Crete again for that reason but would stay at Petra again if it were in a different location. That may suit you - you must decide!
Fantastic Location
Was just searching for reviews for my next holiday and thought it was only fair that I leave reviews for the accomodation we have recently stayed in. Last summer we booked a last minute deal with Thomson, which was allocated on arrival - not something we usually risk. Thankfully we lucked out. Petra Village is in the most fabulous location for tavernas. Hersonissos, only 5/10 minutes walk away, has the most fantastic places to eat, with spectular views. The appartments themselves, although basic, were kept very clean and were more than satisfactory. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and kept the pool bar open until you were ready to go to bed... early hours of the morning. Our room was away from this area so not sure if this would disturb you if you were in a closer room. The pool was not big, but big enough for a pleasant dip, and deep enough to swim. It also has a small childs pool attached. The views from the pool were gorgeous, shame that there wasn't more room and sunbeds really, but with a little manuvering we always managed well enough. I have to add that this hotel would be unsuitable if you aren't very mobile. It is situated on a hill (superb views) and the appartments are up quite steep slopes and numerous steps. Good exercise for most. Beaches - star beach, which is actually part of a 18-30's resort, is 15 minutes walk down hill - cheap taxi ride back if not feeling very active after a day of sunbathing. There is not much BEACH itself here but many pools and sun beds (small charge for sun bed) - fantastic for families. There is a handy little supermarket just turn left out of the appartments and walk for 5 minutes. Lovely british people who run the shop, always willing to give advice and will point you in the right direction for good car hire. Bigger supermarket at bottom of hill - sells everything you could want. However, we tended to catch the bus (towards Stalis) from outside the supermarket at the bottom of the hill, which took you to much nicer beaches with some lovely restaurant/pubs for a quick bevvy and delcious fruit salad. Also plenty of shops and more lively bars along the main road along front. Would recommend hiring a car for a few days of your stay as there is so much beauty around to see, some delightful tavernas high up in the mountains, with much cheaper prices. Also, some beautiful hidden away beaches. Don't bother with the city though, complete waste of time and effort. In summary, a fantastic location for whatever you have in mind, either a relaxing holiday by the pool with a vast variety of tavernas in easy walking distance or a more lively holiday. Only downside was the distance to the beach. We had a fabulous time!
Good Budget Accomodation
Having just returned from our holiday in Crete, I can honestly say that I am missing the Greek way of life already! We spent two weeks at the Petra Village and thoroughly enjoyed it. The appartments are traditional and pretty but fairly basic. The rooms are kept immaculately clean along with the pool area and bar. The appartments are situated within the picturesque village of Koutouloufari where there is a selection of nice restaurants. The village is slightley ruined however by the number of cars, quad bikes and skooters riding around. The town of Hersonissos was a little dissapointing. The main road is very busy, lots of traffic, not very attractive. The beaches are very poor. Crete itself is a beautiful country but I do not feel that Hersonissos is a very nice area. If you travel to other areas of the country it is doubful that you would want to return to Hersonissos. Apart from Hersonissos, this was a great holiday. Lovely appartments, nice pool, great people.
Would recommend
Just spent a week at the Petra. Have spent many a holiday in Greece but this one stands out. The apartments themselves offer a huge amount of privacy - no worries about neighbouring balconies and as the actual apartments are in very small blocks you are not really aware of your neighbours. The rooms themselves are kept clean and tidy. One down side was the air con - we paid extra for the week but it was far from effective, in fact some nights it was cooler to try and keep a breeze going with open doors. Unfortunately a few nights the nextdoor hotel which seemed to be populated by some Irish did seem to all stay outside drinking very loudly until 6am which upset several guests at the Petra. But those are the worst things I can find to say. The village itself is really lovely. Huge selection of tavernas, many fantastic sea views, we only had one meal that wasnt up to much, the majority were fabulous and the staff were extremely friendly. Couple of nice bars, but if you're looking for wild nights out then you need to head into Hersonisis. This is an ideal holiday if you want to go and chill out, have some good food, good company and quiet nights. Be careful of the sun though, being slightly up in the hills the breeze was deceptive and everyone seemed to have one day of total covering up due to burning badly the previous day!! Would highly recommend. Definitely one of the nicer places we've stayed in Greece.
MY BROTHERS WEDDING
My brother got married from petra appartments, alot of our family and the brides were staying there, we all had afantastic time, the staff were more like friends they made our stay with them something special. The appartments were very clean, and we will certainly be going back
Relax, unwind in true Greek fashion.
Nestling upon the hillside close to the beautiful village of Koutouloufari. Petra village apartments offer simple, clean, well maintained (traditionally Greek) accomodation, in a location which many will find perfect. What made the holiday for us was primarily, the location:- close to the quaint village of Koutouloufari and it's fabulous array of tavernas. Gallini's, Pegasus, Emmanuels are all worth a mention for the quality of food and service offered. For those wanting a more lively time, Hersonissos, 1KM away is very lively - check out Star beach complex. Water park, beach, bars, gym, music, crazy(!) golf, Go carts, water sports, bunjee! The staff at Petra village treat you like one of their extended family. This was our 9th visit to Greece, and was definately amongst the top three holidays we've had over there. All round, a great holiday. Andy, Helen and Kate.
Reasonable budget accomodation
We are in our early 40`s and got a cheap late deal for 7 nights at the Petra apartments in Koutouloufari, near Hersonissos, Aug 28th - Sept 5th 2005. We found the place reasonable overall, although we were unfortunate to get the ground floor apartment where the maid dumped all her stuff on our balcony for the day! This meant that we didn`t get much privacy as she was coming and going all the time. That aside, the complex is clean & safe and relatively peaceful, with a nice pool & bar. The staff are very friendly and local amenities are good. Koutouloufari is a lovely quant village with a great selection of bars and restaurants to suit all. Unfortunately it is totally ruined by the constant drone of youngsters on scooters & quad bikes, especially in the evening. This can make for quite a hazardous walk through the narrow streets as there are no pavements! We do not really have any desire to return to the resort for this reason alone.
fantastic
we have just had a fantastic two week holiday at the petra apartments 29/5/2005--12/6/2005 and can't fault it. the rooms are clean, staff excellent especialy demitris and rita if you want something different to snack on ask for a nigel burger, the resort village is very picturesque with narrow streets and cobbled roads, the main resort of hersonissos is a 10-15 min walk away but if like us you want to cheat hire a car we wiil be going back next year and can't wait+
Great base for rest or buses.
Have just retuned from 2 weeks holiday at petra partments and thoroughly enjoyed it. The apartments and grounds are kept very well and services to apartments are very good. If you like travelling round the island as against staying round the pool I can recommend the bus services, very cheap and regular. The only draw-back is after a few times, the journey back up the hill can get a bit of a effort and you may want to gat a taxi,of which there are plenty. restaurants in koutouloufari are plentiful and can recommend "pegasus. If you are down in town, can recommend the"greek corner"restaurant.
