" glorious crete "

My sister and I have just returned from a wonderful week at the Petra Village, the apartments are what you would expect for a 2 star rating, basic but equipt with everything that you need. The staff are friendly and helpful and the apartments were cleaned daily and clean towels supplied every dayyou can stay round the pool and bar which serves snacks as well as drinks or explore the surrounding areas.the towns of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano are about 10 minutes walking distance away and are very traditional, quiet and relaxing.Down the hill about 20 minutes away is Hersonisis and star beach which are livelier if you prefer.the windmill tavern in Koutouloufari serves lovely food (try a greek plate)and the owners are warm and welcoming.
the holiday rep was warm and welcoming and was available everyday at the complex

Advice: ignore the bad reviews and see for yourselves

Activities: WindmillTavern, the spinalonga excursion and the palace of knossos excursion

" Basic but brilliant "

Me and the other half stayed here and, as with the other reviewers, we got a bit worried when we read some of the comments made about Petra. Absolutely brilliant, all the staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful including the Thomson rep Alicia. The apartment were cleaned everyday and the bedding changed about 3 times a week. Yeah there is the problem of the single beds concreted to the floor on either side of the room but it got so hot while we were there that it was a relief not to have a sweaty individual next to you! The hotel is ideally situated depending on what you want to do - turn left outside the apartments for Koutouloufari village with its lovely shops, tavernas and restaurants and turn right then left for the night clubs and pubs of Heronissos (also the buses). We had a brilliant time and would definately consider Crete again and the Petra Village.

Advice: Good food and traditional

Activities: Museums, and Aquarium

" Fab Holiday "

I booked my holiday to Petra Village last minute through Thomson. After reading reviews i was a little worried but this was unecessary as when i got there i found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was very clean and the cleaners came in every day with out fail. We did have to walk up and down a hill to get to the beach but there are plenty of opportunities to hire cars/ scooters/ quad bikes. There were plenty of things to do Watersports/ bungee jump/ visit the aquarium/ relax on the beach/ water park. This holiday can be as relaxed or active as you want it to be. There were loads of places to eat and drink. I would go back to Petra Village as i had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday and met loads of lovely people.
One issue i did have was when i booked with Thomson i made a point of saying i was going on holiday with my partner we wanted a double bed. The lady assured me i would get a double bed but when i arrived i was allocated a room with two single beds that were fixed down to the floor. I later was informed that the lady i booked with had booked a room with two single beds, which i was irritated about as i had made such a point about wanting a double bed. We had to stay in that room as the hotel was full. I also did not enjoy the flights with Thomson as i found the staff to be rude and unhelpful. We had a late flight back so i thought i could get some sleep on the plane. This was not possible due to flight crew constantly walking past and knocking me, loud talking and banging cupboard doors at one point one of the cabin crew open the toilet door and it swung in to my seat and hit me on the arm

" nice place "

This was our 2nd visit to Petra, the prewvious one in 2005.
I was a little apprehensive after reading the reviews for 2008, but found they bore no relation to what I experienced.
The apartments were basic but clean and the cleaners never stopped working.
There are plenty of supermarkets and bakeries nearby and the apartments are only a few minutes walk from Koutouloufari, one of the nicest spots in Crete.
Dont expect a lot of nightlife in the village but there is plenty down the hill in Herssonissus.
The only downside was the air con which leaked and was always "going to be fixed"!
There are plenty of restaurants in the village but Gallini is pretentious.
An essential is a visit to Fabrika where Maria and "Yanni" will do their utmost to make you feel at home.
Be warned about Iraklion airport. It is a nightmare on departure; the system is chaotic and overly complicated and takes ages to get through. In fact they were making a final call when half the passengers had not got through passport control.
Also, Thompson Airline were red hot on weight lomits and at 11 euros an kilo, it can be expensive.

" a really friendly and nice place "

To be honest after i booked this holiday i was not sure about going to Petra Village after some of the reviews i read but i've just got back from a stay here and loved it!
OK it had a few faults but so does a lot of place's anyway its not a palace your paying for its a 2star plus which is basic with a lot of basic things. I think it could do with a lot more credit as the staff was all fantastic and really friendly exspe Zarga, the bar lady always smiling, helpfully and polite which i no u would exped. anyway as for the place its self it can seem a distance from the beach as its down hill but on the way back up its a lot harder, but having said that it the best place to be away from the very busy town and a short walk away from a lovely little village with great place's to eat and shop for things. I would not tell anyone this is the best place for you if you have trouble walking and young kids also elderly as it is on the hill can can be very hard going even the walk to the rooms can seem a bit hard. The apartments have lot of different flowers and fruits to look at in its grounds which gives it a nice look so overall i think anyone going here will have a great time but please don't not expect a palace.

Advice: absolutly beautiful litte village

Activities: this place had lots of great place to eat

" brilliant!!! "

Me and my girlfriend booked a late deal with thomson and after reading the previous reviews we thaught we had made a mistake but how wrong we was! on arrival we was greeted with our keys and room number and was in our room within 5 mins, the appartment was great we had everything we needed fridge, cooker, microwave, kettle, balcony ect.., we coulden't believe it was only a 2+ star!, okay it is up some steep stairs and is a bit hilly but if ur not disabled it shouldn't be a problem, as we arrived at night we was very hungry the next morning and was pleasently suprised to find a snack bar serving full breakfast and snacks right next to the pool along with a bar, there is also a supermarket next to the complex which was very handy for essentials, the place is very clean and the pool was cleaned every day along with our room and the staff are very friendly and helpfull, it is a bit of a trek to the main town centre and the beach but worth it as beaches are beautiful and the sea is gorgeous and crystall clear, there is also a little village with some excelent restraunts and shops only a 10 min walk away from the complex, the greek are so friendly and treat you like you are royalty!, the mountains surrouding you are stunning and weather is allways sunny, honestly the people who have stayed here and give it a bad rating must live in a palace at home as we loved it and would defo go back, what more can i say it was fab!

Advice: excellent location and petra village is great!

Activities: there is lots of nice places to eat and enjoy urself.

" Petra Village Apartments "

I stayed at the Petra Village apartments and was very disappointed. The apartments are built on a hill and we had to climb a very steep hill and steep staircase to reach our apartment. This is not recommended you have to pack your bag with all you need for the pool to save the sheer effort of the climb, not a relaxing way to enjoy your holiday. I do believe that there is a statement by the tour operator to indicate that these apartments are not suitable for those with mobility problems and I understand why.
Once inside I found it very cramped. The electrics were directly above the sink and all cables stretched across the sink and the kettle placed precariously on a very narrow space and would not be suitable for families with young children as was very dangerous. The patio area is very small and looks into other apartments and offers no privacy. The shower was very small and tended to overflow and flood the bathroom.
The cooking facilities were a two ring hob and separate cooker. The fridge was very old and completed mottled with rust. We travelled as a family of 3 however there was only 1 dinner plate in the apartment, very poor.
The smoke alarm in the apartment went off and we had to report to reception for repair. On return to our apartment to find the smoke alarm had been removed and placed in a drawer in the bedroom, surely a breach in fire safety especially considering the electrics at the sink.
My son had the bed in the lounge which was on a concrete plinth with a hard mattress similar to a prison cell. The bed was crawling with ants.
The location is a little remote from the village bars and tavernas.
I love the resort of Koutoulafari and Piskipiano and stayed at far better accommodation last year. The locals are very friendly and the food and service excellent. I would however not consider the Petra Village ever again.
I have never felt the need to write about my holiday before but considering the poor accommodation and the danger of the electrics and lack of smoke alarm I felt compelled to write and let you know.

" We have just returned from the Studio... "

We have just returned from the Studio apartment from Hell at the Petra Village.
The accommodation was a ground floor studio. It was terrible in every respect. The single beds were at right angles to each other. We attempted to rearrange the bedding only to discover(ants)+ the beds were in fact concrete blocks with mattresses on top. No wonder our backs and ribs ached.

The cupboards and fridge stank and we had to clean every plate and all the cutlery before using them.
The cleaners came in for a few minutes to empty the bins. The towels and sheets were only changed once mid week.
The Air Con which cost 7 euros per day.We bought a fan instead. We asked for use of the safe but that was too expensive. Having spoken to other couples who had items stolen from their room we had no choice but to take our money, passports, camera etc with us when we went out. Very inconvenient!

The tiny patio with old plastic chairs was directly overlooked by other guests bedroom window. We had no privacy at all. Neither did they.
Our toilet window faced onto another families patio area. We could hear people talking and laughing when we were using the facilities. Quite unnerving. To make matters worse we only had hot water for 3 days out of 14. Terrible

Overall these apartments are tired and poorly designed. The area is ok if a little isolated. The staff are ok until you complain then they become very aggressive or dismissive. The so called handyman `babis` seemed to spy around the complex. Very creepy little man.

Please view the high ratings given by some people(who may or may or may not have vested interests) with scepticism. These apartments are a health hazard and no where near 3 star.

There is a little shop next door which is really expensive and never charged the same price two days running.

Koutouloufari is a lovely little place but quite remote, if you don’t have a car you will struggle as there are no pavements and its hilly.
The outlying villages are lovely and the people are so friendly and helpful. Crete is definitely worth a visit but don’t waste it by going here!!

" The best holiday i've ever been on!... "

The best holiday i've ever been on! so would find it hard to rate the accomodation too low, at the same time i find it hard to rate it any higher than 8* this is purely because of one reason; a large amount of money was "misplaced" in our apartment. we have no explanation for this as we are all 100% sure the cash was placed in the apartments safe wich was locked.

the apartment was very clean and neat, compact but not too small and was equiped with everything we would need;
>Microwave oven + Grill
>Kettle
>Toaster
>Sink
>Plates, Glasses, etc.

The bedding was always cleaned and arranged neatly, clean towels were always there for us.

The bar area was ideal, enough chairs and tables, beautiful cocktails. Not a wide range of food on offer however.

Rita was by far the best member of staff at Petra Village, so friendly, helpfull and just a lovely person! Babis is also a really nice guy and never seems to take a break, hardest working guy ever! Vas was quite unaproachable at the beginnning of our holiday however i think he warmed to us and started being more friendly however he was constantly pre-occupied with his mobile phone or his girlfriend, too busy to serve our drinks in a hurry. Vas's sister (The blonde girl on reception) is OK but there never seems to be anyone at reception to help.

The pool was not cleaned once during the week i stayed there (i think) and Vas tipped out half full glasses into the pool while he was clearing tables (hmmm, nice)

The Rep at Petra Village, Claire something i think she was called was not to helpfull and very patronising! especially when we informed her of things going missing in our apartments/around the pool, my little brither's Nintendo DS dissapeared from the pool area, Claire was not too concerned.

Overall contradicting most of what i've said above i really enjoyed my stay at Petra Village, thanks to the group of people i holidayed with, Rita and the facilities, etc.

The area around Petra Village was beautiful, some fantastic places to eat and drink and some fabulous traditional shops.

" Tatty furniture, smelly showers,... "

Tatty furniture, smelly showers, microwave with burned on food, saggy plastic sunloungers and three sun parasols between forty-odd people. Butlins circa 1972? No! It's all there at Petra Village! The whole place has a run-down, depressing air. The communal areas were weedy and dirty, for example spillages in the bar area stayed there indefinitely. The most annoying thing though, was that there was not enough room round the pool for the number of people staying at the place, so unless you got down there at eight o' clock in the morning you were practically sitting in the toilet block. Nice! But the most worrying thing was the state of the pool itself; the water was the colour of milk and the filters were blocked with a charming gunk of plasters, hair etc. We gave it a wide berth after a day or two but not before my eight year old son had developed a running sore on his face. We mentioned our misgivings to the rep but got no joy (they only seem interested in flogging their hugely over-priced excursions) and the lady who ran the place seemed to spend about ten hours a day perched on a stool at the end of the bar chain-smoking. The only time she stirred herself was to fetch us the key to the air-con (yours for an extra fifty euros a week). I also walked into the lobby one day to find it deserted and a huge pile of pasports left unattended in full view on the desk. Be aware that if you book a one bedroom apartment for four and are hoping to use the balcony you will have to go out there two at a time - you've seen bigger handkerchiefs. It was interesting that only Brits appeared to be staying at Petra, other more discerning nations having presumably abandoned the place. We went to several other complexes in the area frequented by Dutch and German people and they were totally different, clean and well-equipped. The owners are quite happy to let you use the facilities as long as you buy a few drinks or lunch. This saved the holiday as far as we were concerned. The resort itself is fine and has some nice restaurants, Patriko's in particular was very good. There is a good beach at Stalis, crowded but clean and sandy. Weather was also super, so the only downside really was Petra Village.

" just returned from a 2 week break... "

just returned from a 2 week break with our 2 kids 7 & 3.

We all had a great holiday, the apartments were basic but kept clean and we were provided with clean towels and bedding freqently by a lovely maid called Ula.

The staff were excellent and great with the kids, we found the mixture of staying in the apartments and going down the hill to star beach kept the kids and us happy although be prepared for a big hike with kids or a 7/8 euro fare to return by taxi, also worth a visit to the aquapark and the crete aquarium.

Overall a great holiday and if you do visit i highly recommend a visit to a restaurant in the village of koutoulofari - follow the signs for the greek dancing and plate smashing restaurant (which is worth a visit also) and just before you reach that restaurant on your left is a roof top garden restaurant where we were greeted by a lovely lady called Wendy and served by the nicest staff in the duration of our stay

" We went here on the recommendation of... "

We went here on the recommendation of a friend who likes the same kind of resorts as we do. Our apartment was basic but clean, and although we only used the kettle, the fridge and the toaster, people we met there did cook meals and snacks in their rooms. We loved this place, and people we spoke to had no complaints either. Some people were there for the fourth time, others the second and we will certainly go back. The staff - Vas and his family, Rita and Babis are so friendly and cheerful, well informed and ready to help with anything. It's true about the supermarket which is next door but one, it is expensive, but if you turn left when leaving the complex instead of right, or instead of going down the hill, there are other supermarkets selling the usual food, drink and everything else you need, at cheaper prices. We only went down the hill once and never felt the need again, because we're not "beach people". The pool was enough for us. Going a little further along the road, past the supermarkets, brings you to the gorgeous village with winding cobbled roads and loads of restaurants. We ate at different restaurants every night for the first week and didn't have one bad experience. We went back to them all the second week, although there were others we hadn't tried yet. All the meals were of good quality and were good value for money. All the waiters and staff were friendly and pleased to see us. All in all we had a fab holiday, one of the most relaxing we've had and would tell anyone to go there - from our own experience.
