Got back from two weeks at Silver Beach yesterday. The hotel location is literally on a pebbly beach (sandier along the coast towards Platanias). Great if you want a quiet location but with good buses to somewhere a bit livelier.
Gerani itself is about 5 min walk from hotel, pretty quiet, quite a few shops and restaurants. We tended to get the bus to Paltanias for food in the evening though (5mins on bus, €1.20) as there are over a hundred restaurants to choose from! Also ate in Hania a few times (half hour bus ride, €1.60).
The hotel rooms were really clean and we had a little kitchenette with fridge, mini hob, microwave, sink and cutlery, a pan etc. This was really useful but don't get stung using the mini bar they have in the fridge. When booking out at reception they tried to claim we had used some things from the mini bar, which we hadn't, and got a bit shirty when we refused to pay for something we hadn't used! We also found out when booking out and speaking to another holiday couple that the air con hadn't been on all the time we were there!!! Bit confusing but apparently the hotel turn it on when they want but there is a valve on the machine in your room, which if you don't turn on will just act like a fan rather than kick out ice cold air. We weren't told about this and managed to cope really well considering we thought we had had the air con on (doh!). The other couple had kicked up a stink as he fitted air con units in the UK and had a go for them being stingy so just watch out! I think when it gets even hotter end of July, August, you might struggle without the air con on properly. Other than that the service was really good, everyone was very friendly. Bar food isn't great but passable if you are staying by the pool and don't want to go anywhere for food.
Pool was lovely but you need to get up early to get your towels down (I'm talking 8am)to get a sun bed by the pool, everyone was quick off the mark! If not its not a disaster, the beach is 2 mins from pool and you can pay I think 4 euros for 2 loungers and an umbrella on the beach.
Maids came in every day (apart from Sundays) but didn't change all sheets, just the top sheets. Bottom sheets only got changed 2 or 3 times I think (in 2 weeks). Fresh towels every day though.
Buses run from main road in Gerani, 5 mins walk from hotel. There's also a taxi rank in Gerani and loads of taxis in Paltanias. Loads of shops and restaurants in Platanias and we tended to go there most evenings if we weren't in Chania or out for the day. We did have a walk into Platanias a couple of times and it took about 40mins. If you walk along the beach it will take you about 1hr 15 as the pebbles can be pretty tough to walk on.
You can get bits and bobs of food, fresh bread, jam, cereals, tinned food etc 5mins walk from the hotel and can get international papers 10mins walk from the hotel. There is a phone card phone box about 7min walk from the hotel (turn left from hotel drive, keep walking and at another cross roads on left by a taverna), There is also one on the main road in Gerani and loads in Platanias.
To be honest, the hotel is lovely and clean and a great base if you like going out and exploring like us. Take a small torch though as the lanes are lit but not very well when you walk round at night, though it did feel really safe.

We stayed here for a week arriving back on 05/06/2007, I have to say it was excellent in nearly every way apart from the bar service it let them down on a few occasions.
It was spotlessly clean we had maid service every day including clean bedding.
We would definitely stay there again

The rooms of Silver Beach are very well kept and cleaned everyday. Although in our 2 week stay our towels were only changed about 4 times, and for a supposed 4 star hotel I don't think this is acceptable.
The staff at the hotel were awful to be honest, apart from the maids who always spoke. The woman who ran the hotel was extremely rude and just did not want to help. She was not welcoming at all. The bar staff never seemed to be there and when they did turn up they only served you when they wanted to, they would look you right in the eye and walk away. Which we found very unusual of a Greek person. We have been to many Greek islands before and have always had a warm welcome and great fun, but the staff at this hotel are just lazy, rude, and boring. Which was such a disappointment as we had been very excited about this holiday after the great holiday we had to Corfu the year before (Tzevenos in St George, absolutely fantastic).
If you're looking for a boring holiday with nothing to do, this place is for you. The location of this hotel is so poor there is literally about 5 places to eat, including Silver Beach and about 2 bars. We got a taxi every night to Platanias just up the road, it cost us 14 euro (approx 7 there and 7 back) a day but it was worth it, this place is buzzing, with something for everything. There are many bars and restaurants to choose from and lots of shops to look around so I would strongly recommend finding a hotel there instead.
So overall - Platanias is excellent and Gerani is extremely boring.
