Submitted By: Mrs S J YarrowOn arriving at the hotel, found we had to walk down a flight of stairs (with cases) to check in, only to be told we had to check in across the road at the International II.
On using the toilets next to the lobby was disgusted to find excrement smeared on the walls of the toilets which were next to the bar.
Our room (1 bed apartment) was okay ish, one window was broken and could only be shut with the aid of a piece of metal that the hotel had obviously put there.
Generally the room was shabby, the hotel needs a major refurb, would not go back or recommend.

Submitted By: Mr G BartramWe should have realised from the price that the apartment wouldn't be 5* but I think I can honestly say that it was the first 0* (zero*) place I've ever stayed in - even the B&B's in Whitley Bay are nicer.
The place is certainly run down - but then looking at the other properties in Salou there is little better to compare with; one or two nice hotels but all apartment blocks look like they should be demolished.
Hotel has no reception and we didn't spend any time either in the public area or at the pool (although it did look clean). If we needed a pool we went across to the International II over the road.
The hotel has no reception; the entrance is dismal at best; the lifts (one of which broke down while we were there with a child stuck in it) have seen better days, as has most of the overall building.
The room wasn't 'dirty' but very basic, there was a regular delivery of clean towels & sheets, although we did have to ask for a kettle (took 2 days to get one).
There is a bar at one corner of the compound (not part of the apartments) which did stay open until 5am, but we were sufficiently far enough away not to be affected by any noise - at the time of booking we were advised to request a high-floor room, but given the state of the lifts this wasn't the best of advice.
Area of Salou & Cap Salou is quite nice - if you can get a better place to stay!

Submitted By: Mrs T CurzonThe location was pretty good, not even 10 mins walk to the main lovely beach and there are excellent places to eat just out of the apartment block with lots of friendly people.
We thought that there are probably some grubby apartments as we thought ours had been redecorated fairly recently and these are the ones people are complaining about. The corridors certainly didn't smell of urine and the pool isn't particularly dirty, although pretty small.

Submitted By: Mrs L MitchellI would never get anything off the Reps again as they rip you off, they were charging 69 euros for a football match. Plana Bus Company did the exact same trip only for 25 euros cheaper. They also charged 38 euros for a glorified ‘Rep Party’ which was really just a horse show.
The people in the area overall where very rude and not at all helpful. I don’t think our family will ever go back to Salou after the two weeks we just spent there.

Submitted By: Mrs J ChallonerWhen we opened the door to our apartment we were hit by the stench of stale cigarette smoke. No lights, we had to find the fuse box to make the lights work! The room was full of tatty old furniture but we were so exhausted we fell into bed. The horrendous music kept us awake until the early hours - 5.30am - and then all the dustbins outside were emptied, piles of them. By which time it was time to get up.
The curtains looked as though someone had puked over them, in between the holes. The linings were ragged and stained. The towels were clean as was the bed linen - don't look underneath! The mattresses were dubious. The beds seemed to be made out of Dexion shelving legs!!!
The cooker was indescribable - thick grease, broken. No kitchen equipment - bowls, utensils, nothing to cook in except a couple of broken dishes and pans. No kettle. But there was a washing machine with no door - Didn't work!
We were broken in to as was the apartment next door. Fortunately we had nothing stolen because I had hidden our money well.
We didn't look at the pool because we were so put off by the whole image. We asked to change but were told we had to make an appointment with the rep. because First Choice haven't used this hotel before; not his normal patch. Our complaint was written by him and we asked to change but he said we may have to wait one or two days out of our 7 and offered us a room change, which had a hole in the door before we got in! Description much the same as the other room but slightly quieter.
People off the streets seemed to come in and wander the corridors. Bagfuls of rubbish littered the corridors along with cigarette ends. You had to take your own rubbish down to the dustbins by the exit to the complex.
Disabled access, if you could negotiate the cattle grid like drain in the disabled entrance at the side. Main reception/toilet you need long arms as the light switch once again would go off every few seconds while you were sat on the loo. I had to sit with a walking stick holding the light pull! Oh, what a sight!
All in all the worst holiday I have ever had. Still fighting for compensation.

Submitted By: Miss L GRAYWe were to check in at 2pm but were told the room wasn’t ready due too cleaning, we eventually got in our room at 5.30pm after given wrong keys/room number/even block-and then the room didn’t look like it had been cleaned.
There was what appeared to be blood on the bathroom wall, no plugs for the sink, not enough clean sheets for five people and dust and hairs on everything!
I do have to say the pool wasn't too bad but the staff weren’t all that helpful and as for the rep-she was down right rude(due to hangover) when told our complaints after eventually finding her!!!
Anyone going to Salou it is nice if you get a nice hotel/apartment but do not stay here!!!

Submitted By: Mrs L A FiscusFirst night horrific; room situated close to disco come strip club, which is open till 5am with very loud music, also loud Spanish football fans singing; only got 30 minutes sleep! Parking very difficult to find; filthy streets around the back; never cleaned; only main roads cleaned.
Hotel; I reckon a 2 star; no TV; no air con; no kettle; very basic ; not filthy but better cleaning needed as under beds dirty; on day before leaving I spotted what I think was a small baby cockroach!!! I didn't dare to tell the kids!
Pluses; we got a change of room on 3rd day; free use of kettle; enough towels and sheets overall; manager at reception good and understanding; swimming area nice, but water freezing.
Salou; fantastic beaches; lively; good for kids overall; if want quiet and better cleanliness stay in Cambrils and can travel to salou only up the road; very expensive Spain is; be prepared financially; probably due to euro.
Eating; Uncle Sams huge portions; chippies next to uncle Sams; Sinatras; plenty of Spanish restaurants/cafes if want Spanish food; plenty of bars/cafes/English bars.
We will never stay at Catalonia gardens again; not suitable for families and too dirty re the surroundings; couldn't believe we had no TV; if you want one cost around £100! I will only now stay in 4 star or above and also do not have any faith in Thompson at all!! Just a rip off they are!!

Submitted By: jojenningsThe room was dirty and smelt like toilets, the lifts and staircases were just as bad. The pool was dirty with excrement in it, and there was rubbish and broken glass everywhere, hardly the place you would want young children to be.
For the week we were there the room was not cleaned and no towels were provided, the beds did not get changed and there was no kettle in the room and the furnishing were old and broken.
With no air con in the room we had no choice but to have the doors open, but the music was so loud and played all night that we had very little sleep.
I think this place should just be for 18/20 years old that don’t mind all the noise, other than that they should burn it down and start again.
It’s the worst holiday I’ve ever had and would never return to Salou, I think Thomsons should be totally ashamed of themselves for sending a family to that hell hole.

Submitted By: Ms E SmythWe were reassured by the travel agent that the Catalonia Gardens is good accommodation. Well this was not the case.
The place is filthy, stairwells dirty with rubbish lying around, and the lift was broken and smelt of urine anyway.
There was no air conditioning in the room; we got 2 fans from the reception across the road, €32, hardly cheap! With soaring temperatures in July 2 ancient fans did nothing to cool us down at night.
€100 deposit we had to pay upon check in... When I asked what the deposit was for, the receptionist told me that it was for breakages! What a joke, if there was absolutely nothing worth €100 in that apartment I can assure you, never mind breaking anything!
If you are on a tight budget then €132 before you even start off is hardly reassuring.
The reception staff are friendly, but when we asked for a different room, (due to the noisy night club were directly above) she offered us an apartment at the top of the same block, hardly safe with a 6yr old that is blind.
The swimming pool is filthy, the walls of it are brown and we never seen it being cleaned.
Salou is great for kids, but the Catalonia Gardens is a terrible place to stay, unless you are 18 yrs old and with a crowd of mates, and don’t mind slumming it!

Submitted By: Ms Js SimpsonIt was very hot I recommend hiring a fan for 20 euros. Because the noise is dreadful if you leave the doors open. On arrival we were put on the 3rd floor facing the night club which is open till 5.
So we asked if we could move facing the pool but there was no room so on the 2nd night we were moved straight away. Staff are friendly and helpful to. On arrival check in was closed but we use international two. You can also use there facilities. E.g. the pool games room E.T.C The Lift Was broke in the apartment but after 3 days it was fixed.
Salou its self is a great place. Very good for kids. I recommend going the theme park port venture and the water parks and if you have lads its worth visiting Barcelona I always recommend eating in chippes sanatras grannies kitchen boomerangs Texas embassy uncle sams.
Weren’t the best apartments ever but was excellent my daughter wants to go back and she made lots of friends to. My son said he wants to go back he enjoyed it and my husband loved the fair. Overall its great don’t let people put you of.

Submitted By: Miss A DaviesWe read some bad reviews, and before arriving we were very wary, but it was clean, spacious, and in a central location.
From the outside it appears quite scruffy but the inside is clean, and the pool is really big.
Overall we had a lovely holiday, it’s in a good location and there’s loads to do in the day, as we were young we thought the nightlife was very quiet but we didn’t expect big wild parties.
I suggest going to Aquapolis in Pineda it costs 2 euro on the bus and 20 euro each but is well worth it a lot of fun.

Submitted By: Miss D LittleFor a start the apt, was never cleaned right the maid came once in a fortnight.
We had to go reception 3 times to get clean sheets and towels. The security was terrible, the noise started about midnight till 5.am from a local disco music blaring as loud as possible.
Salou itself is a nice place the beach was great but, this family will never go back to the Catalonia Gardens ever again, truth be told it was hellish.

Submitted By: Miss D Mc CallionThe room was huge, good facilities to cook a good Irish breakfast in the morning!
The pool was the business with those amazing reps (even though they couldn’t dance!).
We won a fortune on the bingo and it was within walking distance to everything we needed.
The cleaners were a wee bit lazy, but we befriended them and things really looked up after that! (Tell them their hair is muy bonita!).
Loved these apartments, would definitely recommend them if you areup for a laugh...oh and btw, it’s close to a few good Irish pubs....what more could you want! Enjoy people!

Submitted By: Mrs K ClarkWe have previously stayed at International 11 apartments which is situated next door and all persons staying at the Catalonia Gardens can use the facilities at the International 11.
Salou is ideal for a cheap getaway which is what I and my family needed. The resort is noisy but the Catalonia is away from the clubs but is situated next to a regular used road. The noise cannot be heard if you have the doors and windows closed during the night, but this could be quite hot if staying at peak season as there is no air con in the rooms.
Rooms vary in style and condition. Although our room was not of modern standards probably 1980s style it was clean and basic. Other rooms have been updated.
Our apartment was large enough for myself, husband and two teenage daughters, we had a large corner balcony and all the facilities needed for self catering.
On arrival you check into the international reception who give you the keys for the Catalonia. You have two keys one opens the main gate which can only be accessed by residents and the second key is for your room.
The Catalonia has both Spanish and British residents and the pool area is very nice and quiet but if you want a pool area with noise and games then visit the International next door.
We paid £500 for 1 week for 4 people inc flights and accommodation so we didn’t expect luxury. We had a nice break with lots to do in Salou and lots of nice restaurants and bars.
If you want a quiet peaceful holiday do not go to Salou but if you don’t mind a bit of noise with lots to do then this area is ideal. A lot of the apartments are dated as this is an old Spanish resort but for a cheap break or anyone on a budget the Catalonia are good basic accommodation with a lovely pool.

However I was disappointed with the apartments.
Upon arrival we had to check in at the international hotel across the road.
At which point we were told we need to give a 100 euro deposit, which the tour operator said there wouldn’t be, so that threw out spending budget as we didn’t bring much money anyway and hadn’t prepared for that.
The corridors and lift in our apartments were clean, but when we got in to our apartment it was a different case. The place was filthy, there were only enough cutleries for 1 person, yet the apartment would comfortably cater for 6 people, there were no small bowls, and all the plates needed a good wash before use.
There was no kettle, microwave, air con or TV, which we were promised by our tour operator Fleet way travel.
There must have been a problem with the drains or some thing because it smelt really badly, and we only had 1 plug for the 4 drains in the apartment.
The apartment we stayed in desperately needs refurbishing, the curtains were torn, and holes punched in the doors that were hanging off. The walls were badly marked.
The location was good though; we had a pool facing one, so had no noise from the clubs and pubs, but were still close to the centre of Salou.
I would defiantly go back to Salou, just not to Catalonia Gardens Apartments.
