what a rubbish hotel
got back sat 22nd august and was glad to leave hotel.travel agent said was lovely hotel dont no where she was looking.food was awful unless u like chips and salad for breakfast and tea! rooms were not very good ours leaked in the rain and wet the beds, we were not moved to another room just given towels to mop up wet.entertainment was rubbish just a mimed act every night. pool area was nice but you would never get chance to go round pool unless you queued for bed from 8am. outside hotel you have to dodge dog dirt and glass.went to cambrills last year was much cleaner area.was told hotel had been newly refurbished that end was saved for spanish, dutch and germans.english were thrown in dirty end with grotty unhovered purple carpets not nice marble floors like other end! wouldnt visit this hotel again even if we won free holiday. there were also several people who had handbags and money stolen.my advice if you are going to salou give this hotel a miss and stay nearer to cambrills end of resort!
What a joke!
We decided to try out a different part of Spain this year. Travelling with a 13 year old boy we needed somewhere that there was plenty for him to do, but where we could experience the local culture!!! Hah what a joke!! The only difference between Salou and Blackpool is that they drive on the other side of the road. The hotel is classified as a 3 star. The hotel itself is very tired and dated. The lobby was extremely hot, the conservatory cane furniture was dirty and tired. The leather sofa's were torn and seen better days. Bearing in mind that Spain has a new law supposedly enforcing no smoking in public places, restaurants and hotels, as a non smoker l and my family were fumigated to the point of nausea. The food ok if you like chips with everything and not a Spanish dish anywhere to be found. The staff with the exception of the Hotel Manager who was a miserable, were lovely. The only ignorant people there, l fear were us Brits!! Who did nothing but smoke, swear, shout , push and shove, and make enough noise very late at night and early morning to wake the dead. The funniest bit was the early morning ritual. The coffee served in the hotel restaurant was the foulest l have ever tasted. So we used to go to the bar and order a couple of expresso's where we sat and watch the swimming pool ritual. Every morning the pool man cordoned off the pool area as he finished cleaning it at 1000am he opened up the pool area and then the fun began. I have never seen anything like it, unless you count the Harrod's Sales!! Us Brits were the worst offenders, they would push over their own grandmothers all to grab a sunbed and parasol!!! The evening entertainment was so bad it was funny. They mimed everything, although give them credit, out of the 8 entertainment team there the only 2 that couldn't speak any other language other than English was yes you guessed it the 2 British team members!! We had money stolen from our room, when l stupidly forgot one day to take my purse, l complained and the hotel manager was rude and condescending and basically told me she wasn't interested. Other than that the staff were friendly and courteous. They had to put up with alot from us as a nation and did it all with good grace and a sense of humour. Why anyone wants to go to Salou is beyond me, if that is what you want stay at home!!! Calypso was tired looking, smelt and the air con was tempermental and very very noisy. The rooms were clean but like something out of the 70's. They catered well for those people who are afraid of actually going abroad and trying something new!! Go Figure! For us, it was hell on earth, as we like to go native and if it hadn't have been for Port Adventura that our son wanted to go too, we would have left after the first night. The food was plentiful but not the best quality and anyone who thinks the food was good, have very low standards. Would we go again. NO NEVER. If we go back to that area we would stay in La Pineda or Cambrils or further up or down the coast. But we would avoid Salou and its Rover Return and Queen vic pubs for those who live in fear of actually trying something new and different. Sad really as you only get one shot at this life, and going on holiday should be to change scenery and experiences, not to continue as if we were at home only that we pay in Euros and the weather is actually good.
Not good for children
Great hotel, great food, fantastic nightly entertainment team, but thought Spanish staff were ignorant, too many Spanish in hotel, HOTEL IS SITUATED NEXT TO A NIGHT CLUB once 1am arrives prepare yourself for a sleepness night, we had to put up with loud Spanish chants, traffic, horns sounding, shouting, screaming, loud music from 1am till 5am every night except for Sunday, hotel is supposed to be described has suitable for children, how can it be, we couldn't wait to get home to get a good nights sleep, pool area clean but didn't have enough chairs for the amount of guests booked in, went with Thomson but wouldn't go with them again, for the 1st 4 days they constantly pestered you to come to one of their meetings, notes were put under your door every day, they even phoned us from our room to ask us to come to the meeting, they signed our 11yr old to one of there clubs without our permission. We went there for a weeks break but now need a week at home to recover, you have been warned!
Great place
Spent a week here in August 06 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Reception staff were helpful. Room was nice (free bottle of Cava) with a good sized balcony and sat tv. Food was varied and excellent - we put on half a stone each! Entertainment was first class and there were loads of kids fully occupied by a brilliant in-house entertainment team. There are 2 pools and sunbeds were available every day. Drinks and snacks were reasonably priced. Nice location - easy reach of shops and beach. The Thomson team were also very good. Highly recommended.
Loved the Calpyso
Just returned from Salou two days ago. Hotel was excellent, 10 minute walk to "strip" which was perfect as you were far enough away from nightlife not to be kept awake in the early hours, but close enough to get to if you wanted it. The food selection at the buffet was excellent, kids buffet less so, but they could always use the adult one which had plenty to offer. The meal times were convenient (breakfast until 10.30, dinner until 9.30) A sit down meal on one night of stay was also included - very nice touch. Staff were pleasant, rooms were clean, plenty of entertainment nightly on the complex, and lots of silly games to play during the day as you lounged around the large pool. Plenty of chairs and tables to use if you couldn't get a sun bed. Reasonable drink and food prices at the poolside bar, large tv lounge. The rooms are airconditioned - a must in July. The only downside is the rooms are a bit small (especially if booked as a quadruple) but fine if you just want a place to lay your head, and the walls were very thin, so you heard a lot from your neighbours - otherwise, 10 out of 10 and Ideal for families. Highly recommended.
OK But not for non smokers
Stayed at the Calypso for 4 nights with my wife and two children (boys aged 7 and 6) at the end of a 10 day stay in Mardrid and Barcelona. Check in was fine (be aware there are no hotel provided car parking facillities only limited parking on streets nearby). The staff were pleasant and friendly. We were slighly dissappointed in the room we were given - it was a standard room with 4 single beds squeezed into it. We had a balcony that was really too small for all of us to sit comfortably - even if we wanted to (it was facing the front of the hotel and got pretty noisy at nights). The room was clean but not particularly modern - 2/3 star really. We stayed on a half-board basis and thought the food was very good considering the amount of people they had to cater for - my only gripe about the meals were that we had to pay for the drinks - even those on an all inclusive package had to do this - a bit of a rip off really. The pools were clean but you had to be out pretty early to get the beds and sunshades - the pool guy opened the pool at 10.00am and there was an almighty rush - like the first day of the sales! The evening entertainment for adults was pretty awful - the night we stayed in, we saw these enthusiastic reps miming to a "Greese" backing track- quite funny and embarrassing at the same time. The kids club rep was pretty good with the kids and kept them occupied with games and other activities - Thomson reps had their own room that we were not allowed into. Our biggest gripe was the unavailability of any non-smoking areas outside by the pool and during the evening entertainment. This really spoiled our holiday at this hotel as the staff did not enforce the no smoking by the pool rule. In summary an OK pack 'em high and deep hotel - but we will not be going back there.
Excellent hotel great quality for 3 starts
Just returned from this hotel yesterday, it was fantastic. The hotel was very impressive from the outside, had 4 pools really, 2 main ones and 2 smaller ones. The only downfall that I would say was the queues for dinner, they were a little long, but if you went either early or later they were fine. We had a family room, a little cramped but satisfactory for what we needed it for. The hotel staff were very pleasant, and the Thomson reps were great. I cannot understand why some people have put bad reviews on this, they are obviously just looking for faults with the hotel and very picky. I would recommend this to anyone, without a doubt the best 3 star hotel that I have stayed in. Please feel free to email me with any questions or doubts that you have in relation to this hotel or Salou (laupeiluj@aol.com).
Loved This Hotel !!!!!!
Well, where do I start? The food was superb, there was a huge selection and the theme of the food differed each night. Rooms were spotless and maids are fantastic. Bathrooms are always supplied with a fresh set of towels. The pool was well maintained and there are lots of deck chairs. (You will always be able to get yourself one !!) Overall, the hotel was immaculate. The staff were friendly and very helpful towards guests! I would certainly recommend this hotel to others. GREAT HOTEL - WILL GO AGAIN !!!!!!!
Worth a try
Stayed here at the end of May for 1 week and thought it was really nice. There was a lot of youngsters, english, spanish and french. The hotel is split in 2 parts, one being above the disco which i heard was pretty noisy at night, the other where we were was ok, after the entertainment finished it was very quiet. Food was pretty good with a carved meat every night, not much choice for kids but do they ever eat much on holiday anyway? If you do venture out for food do not go toa restaurant called boomerang on the street down to the beach. We went and waited 1hr 20 mins for awful awful awful food. Pool was freezing cold (worst part for me). Kids club very good and in house reps were very entertaining.
Never again
We went on a two week break but will never return again. Very noisy hotel with lots of spanish students running around late at night keeping us up and waking kids up. Food for children was terrible not alot to choose from it was pizza every night with another dish Poolside was ok alot of broken and dirty sunbeds you had to look through them to get good one. on checking in was told we had to wait half hour for key that turned into three and half hours. Lots of guest said about recieving a bottle of cava in there room this didnt happen for us when i mentioned this to reception they told us tomorrow but tomorrow never came
