Very noisy… no in fact make that very, very noisy!
Entertainment went on way too late and was mostly the same stuff every night. Rooms were clean and the staff friendly. (Thompson rep was a bit of an unhelpful prat but we will say no more about that.)
Food was ok but could do with a bit more choice. No way is it a five minute walk to the beach. If you’re a family of four with young children it’s at least twenty minutes.
Nothing for young children at night outside the hotel. On the plus side theme park and water parks were excellent. We would go back to Salou at a push, but definitely not Calypso unless we lost our hearing.

Just got back from the hotel Calypso. There was 8 adults in our party and we all had a good time. The food was varied and of good quality and the rooms were adequate. The hotel has lost its super family status. l don’t know why; the pool area is very good for children with a nice play area.
There are good bus routes, we all went to Tarragona by bus for the day which was excellent. Also 2 of our party went to Barcelona on the bus they had a good day.
The entertainment was ok. The entertainment staff worked hard. With it having Spanish, Portuguese, French and English in the hotel it restricted the entertainment they could put on due to the different languages spoken.
Our only problem with the hotel was the security; one woman had her bag pinched when she went to put some rubbish in a bin 10yards away. Also a man had his wallet pinched and was on his way to the police station to report it. There was also a man checking in and left his luggage and hand luggage near reception and he caught a man walking off with his hand luggage. There was also a woman who had her bag pinched and the thief was caught but the hotel did not want to involve the police. If this is not sorted out there will be nobody booking in to this hotel because they will be ill at ease there.
The hotel is at the back of the resort and I don’t know if this is easy access for people who just want to wander in.

This is the 2nd time we have been to this hotel-the 1st was 2 years ago and I can say that I can see this time round why this hotel has lost its Superfamily status.
We were placed in Calypso II, which we were told later is the family block, so you are not disturbed by noisy teenagers. Somebody was having a joke I feel, as we were placed directly above the stage where the evening entertainment was each night.
Loud is not the word-we couldn't even hear the TV and this entertainment started at 10.30pm and went on until 12.30 ish each night as there was a disco after the main show!
How you manage to get a 5 year old to sleep with that noise I have no idea! I think I would have preferred noisy teenagers. This hotel does not seem very set up for kids-the kids disco did not start until 9.30pm! And finished at 10.15pm.
There was a cinema which showed films, mainly for the kids, at about 7.30pm but this was taken off if football was on. No warning was given, so if like us you had promised your child to see Ice Age-The Meltdown, then tough as football took priority.
The food was ok, no complaints really, you will always find something to eat.
The pools were great, with a play area for the kids which was handy.
A 10 minute walk to the beach which was lovely and just round the corner for shops and bars. All in all, a fairly typical 3 star, ok for the price we paid but just a shame about the noisy rooms.
Just watch out when receiving any change for any purchases, especially on the buses, as they give you the change in coins, but then wait a few seconds to see if you notice you need, for example, a 5 Euro note. Salou is ok, abit dirtier than last time, but all in all it's ok, but nothing for kids to do at night apart from parents to pay for arcade games and rides-parents beware you will need plenty of 1 Euro coins!
If you don't mind noise, Calypso Hotel ok, and Salou ok for a beach holiday.

My husband and 2 young children have just returned from a nightmare holiday from hell, in the dirty urine smelling Calypso. The corridors in the Calypso 2 building are covered with graffiti and the carpets are stained and smell.
The bathroom was another story with my rusty bath and mould around the taps. Skirting boards were covered in dust and broken.
The Thomson reps well they are a joke they told us if we wanted to move we would have to go to an internet cafe and find somewhere else to stay and sort it for ourselves. Great customer service. Not!
We also found the food was not edible and spent all are spending money on food. We also hardly had a good nights sleep all week thump thump music and shouting and yelling going on to 5.30am.
This was the worst holiday I have ever had the misfortune to go on as standards of everything were low. This hotel is meant to be 3 star I wouldn’t even rate it 1 star.

We went to the Clypso in July 2007. We were accompanied by friends who helped to make this particular holiday much more bearable. I say this because if we had gone alone we would probably have caught the next plane home.
Our main disappointment was the fact that we were kept awake while 5.30am every day due to excessive night club noise from the cage! The title of the club is rather befitting to the clients that frequent it.
In spite of protestations to Thomson’s & the hotel desk nothing was done about it. Thomson’s recommended that when the noise took place ask the desk to telephone the police & they would tell the night club owners to be quiet!!
Yeah right. I strongly recommend that future holiday makers actually do the latter
otherwise you will have no redress because you will not have exhausted all options.
Other than this & the house keeping of corridors somewhat lacking the restaurant side of things was excellent. The staff were very courteous & extremely friendly & sincere.

Absolutely great holiday....have just booked up for next July. Rooms very basic but cleaned daily.
There was always something going on in hotel throughout the day and night. The entertainment team were brilliant, my little 4 year old fell in love with one of them I think...It was Pio that’s all we hear about now.
The evening shows were all great and very well choreographed by the animation team.
All the staff at the Calypso were very friendly and helpful at all times...
This was the best holiday we have ever had as a family and would recommend it to anybody young and old.
This year there were 6 of us went. We have just booked for next year and there are 13 of us going.

The Hotel Calypso is undoubtedly a three star hotel. It was very basic.
Little touches where lacking that we'd taken for granted having stayed at higher rated hotels.
That said, for the seven days of our trip, our room was clean and fresh towels were provided each day. The hotel had a general feel of cleanliness, (although the hotel could have done with a refurb). The hotel staff where friendly and professional.
For us, the biggest advantage of staying at this hotel was the "food". We're fussy eaters so we were pleasantly surprised that the food was varied, fresh and really well cooked - well done to the chef!
From our experience, we would advise anyone staying here to give the "Alfresco" restaurant a wide berth. We went there as a treat for my birthday. The ambiance was spot on but the food was seriously disappointing. We enjoyed the nightly entertainment.
The location was great for travelling around by foot, and the transport links to Port Aventura where nearby and easy.
This hotel suited our needs for a budget summer holiday with a child.

I am 15 and have just come back from holiday, most of the reviews are from adults, so I thought I’d give a teenagers point of view.
The hotel is great for kids, 2 large pools and 1 small, with fountains and a small river running around a park. The park has a slide and climbing frame.
There is also a great arcade with a variety of things to do:
Pool, bowling alley, dance mats, table football and much more. The upstairs of the arcade is the internet centre, with around about 30 computers in.
The area around the pools got quite busy, so it was hard to get a bed around there, as in any hotel in the world. However, there is a large seating area, which is the best place to catch the sun anyway, but it is also possible to sit in the shade there to.
During the day you will see the Animation/Entertainment team rehearsing the routines for the show that evening. They work from 10am till 3am, with 1day off a week; however, they still have to rehearse for the show that night, so they are a very hard working team. All of them are great people and easy to get along with.
The shows are done to a very high standard with a totally different thing every night. For the kids there’s a mini disco at 9.30pm for an hour, then the main show starts at 10.30 and usually goes on until 12.
Then after that there is always either a disco or karaoke on in the apple bar, this is then on until 2am, and the bar is open until 3am.
The food is fine, nothing special, just what you would expect from a buffet, the usual eggs bacon beans an sausage in the mornings, and a choice of warm or cold foods in the evening.
The food tends to be the same everyday, with just a few things changing. There is also a small separate buffet for the kids.
There were 3 of us and the room was fine, just 3 beds, a TV and private bathroom. What else do you need? The TV had English channels: bbc1, itv3 and zone reality. However, we did not have a remote, if you plan on watching TV, then I would say take a TV times.
Quite a majority of the guests at the hotel were French, Spanish and Dutch. The smallest majority of people seemed to be the English, which could make it harder for the children to make friends.
English football and sky sports was shown everyday in the air conditioned apple bar on a giant screen (Which was great to see man united lose on!!!!)
Overall it was a great holiday, couldn't find any faults with it at all !! Would recommend it to anybody.

Have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Calypso. We had changed our accommodation a few weeks before going due to building work issues at the hotel we had booked. We read the reviews good and bad and were not sure if we had made the correct choice but after a brilliant 2 weeks we knew we had.
There were 4 adults and 4 young children in our party and we all had a great time and would recommend this place to other families.
The rooms are a bit basic and Calypso 2 could do with a bit of upgrading but it is only a room you sleep in.
The food was fine and the children had their own buffet in the evenings and always found something they liked. The staff in the restaurant were always chatty with the children and were quite quick to give lollipops to them (even at breakfast!!).
The children had a brilliant time playing in the little stream between pools, at the park and at the mini disco in the evening which was not just dancing but included games and everyone got a lollipop at the end!
The Med Playa reps were brilliant, they work from mid morning to late at night always smiling and encouraging everyone (children and adults) to join in with their games and activities. They put on some brilliant shows in the evening all choreographed by them and sometimes even live singing. Visiting shows were brilliant particularly the men from Ghana!
The reception staff were helpful and would quite happily order taxis and point you in the right direction and answer any questions you had.
The Thomson reps were really good as well. They helped us out when we had missed the bus to their decades evening by arranging taxis for us making sure we got in them, that there was someone there to greet us at the other end and that we knew which coach to get on for the return journey.
We had such a good 2 weeks that not one of the adults got that "I'm ready to go feeling" The children were sad to be leaving and my oldest keeps asking if we can go back next year!
Would definitely consider going back to this hotel as it's great for families of all ages.

A lovely friendly hotel, basic room, but sufficient and kept clean on a daily basis.
Food fresh and well prepared. Plenty of staff on duty, sometimes queues, but just have to work out less busy times! All staff very helpful and friendly.
Entertainment throughout day, various kids clubs, Thomson entertainment staff, and hotel entertainment staff on duty throughout day and night. My children loved it and I myself enjoyed the shows.
Plenty of pools for various ages, great little streams for your toddler to paddle in, and life guards on duty, and cleaned daily.
Travelled with a 2 year old and a 68 year old, with various ages in between. Will be going back next year.

I read the reviews after I booked our family holiday and was dreading it because some of the comments were that bad, but we have just returned from spending 2 fun filled weeks at the Calypso hotel and all I can say is I cant wait till next year when I have booked for me, my partner and my 2 children aged 13 and 8 to go again for another 2 weeks
The hotel is very clean, staff are all friendly and the entertainment staff are out of this world, they work very long hours but do their best to make sure both adults and children enjoy their stay. There is plenty for the kids to do in the hotel and the shops, supermarkets and restaurants are all close by, the beach is very nice and clean and is only a 5 to 10 min walk away.
It was the best holiday we had ever had, thanks to hotel Calypso and all of its staff
