stayed at this hotel in sep 2004 and had a fab time, didnt have a child then so thought when we had our 3 yr old son we would take him there. what a big mistake.
the food was awfull, cold and the kids section contained of either chicken in breadcrumbs or fish. no meat or veg.
the room was noisy with either the sound from entertainment (which was rubbish) or the rooms either side who never seemed to sleep!!!!!!!
would recommend salou, but not the calypso hotel

Rooms
-----
Our room was lovely. One deep red wall, deep red bed covers, stripey/arty curtains with reds and purples. 3 beautiful pictures or nature on the walls. Sliding mirrored wardrobe doors. Balcony with table and two chairs. TV with about 16 channels – We mainly watched the English film channel or Flava music channel. There is a safe in the wardrobe which you can pay to use. We had a problem with the bathroom lock but it was sorted quickly. Walls were very thin - people were moving furniture next door, someone was walking in flip flops above, people were arguing the over side of us and had there TV loud - this all sounded like it was in the room.
Cleanliness
-----
Rooms were cleaned everyday. No complaints there.
Food
-----
General: Buffet style. Lots available. Always different breads and butter available.
Breakfast: Full english, cereals, biscuits, toast, hams, cheeses, pinapple or orange juice and hot drinks. There were Churros on our last day (Tuesday). Only problem was the toasting machine - took forever - had to put our bread through about 4 times and people got very inpatient with it. Also, because it was at the end of the queue - your breakfast cools down.
Dinner: Varied each night. Always two different soups to start. Always a variety of salad, chips, pasta and different sauces, vegetables, potatoes in different styles, some sort of fish dish each night and a few meat dishes each night. There is also a Kids menu. On our first night (Tuesday) it was Chinese theme, we didn't try any of the Chinese food as we had salad, however it looked good. You have to buy your drinks.
Entertainment
-----
Beijing Acrobats on the Tuesday was amazing. We also watched the entertainment staff’s version of 'Grease' which was very good - funny and they are great dancers. They speak many languages to make sure everyone is happy. The entertainment staff were very funny and very good with children. The other nights we were not in the hotel for the entertainment. If you are outside on the terrace / near pool area during the day they play small games such as if you catch a stick that is dropped 3 times then you win a cocktail. However, if you are close by then you WILL have to play - The lady lifted my chair up to get me off it, then pushed me backwards towards the game - this was very embarrassing.
Bars
-----
There is a downstairs bar which has pool tables and a couple of arcade games and goes out onto the terrace where the entertainment is held if the weather is ok. 1.75 euros for a coke. 1 euro for a packet of crisps. 2.50 euros for chips. There is also a bar which is sort of a lounge area where the entertainment takes place if the weather isn't good. Happy hour is from 5pm-6pm where drinks are 2 for 1. You can buy a jug of sangria for 6 euros and get 2 jugs. There is also the 'Apple Bar' on the same floor - which we didn't actually realise was there until someone pointed it out to us. It’s more like a club bar, there's a huge screen where music videos are played and a DJ playing good music, Karaoke (loads of songs to chose from) or on the last night we were there they were playing the Nintendo Wii, this is open until 2am.
Staff
-----
Entertainment staff: Happy, funny, helpful, speak English well (and other languages), great with children, maybe slightly pushy.
Reception staff: Speak some english but weren't very helpful when my purse was stolen.
Thomson reps: VERY helpful, very nice, however they are not around between 1pm and 4pm/5pm if you have any problems. You don't meet them until the morning after you arrive which wasn't good for us as we arrived early afternoon and didn't know what to do for that day.
Waiters: The men were friendly - one was perhaps too friendly. He bothered my friend about going for a drink all the time and in the end we complained. He was coming up to our table about 4 times each meal trying to get her to go out with him. He then later told her that he didn't want her to speaking to these other guys who we made friends with.
Area
-----
There is a Bus Plana stop a short walk down the road - the people there are very helpful and you can go wherever you want to go - Barcelona, Port Aventura, Tarragona, the markets, etc. There are restaurants and shops close to the hotel, the shops mainly groceries and touristy items - the surround is very commercialised and everything seems to be written in English. So if you're looking for Spanish culture, Salou is not the place to go. Clubs are a 15 minute walk away and there are English Reps dotted around if you don't know the way.
Check Out
----
Barcelona, Port Aventura, House of Illusion Show, Snoepys (Club), Beaches (Sea was lovely), La Pineda, Tarragona.
Bad Points
----
The men were a bit too friendly in Salou - they all stared at us and wolf whistled or blew kisses or asked us somewhere. This got frustrating. My purse got stolen on the terrace outside the hotel and also my phone and my money was stolen when I went clubbing. Be very careful. Check your change - I was short changed 3 times (that I noticed). People try to push you into going places or buying things - just walk away.
Think that's about it! Hope this helps! If you want to ask me anything, my email address is: chessyblampied@hotmail.com xx

Having just returned from a week at the Calypso Hotel writing to say that although the hotel corridors were a bit shabby, the rooms were all clean and good. We had a poolside ground floor room ideally situated for the numerous swimming pools that the hotel has. The food was good with plentiful supplies of both breakfasts and evening meals and good quality. We had no queuing. Staff were all very friendly. The evening entertainment by the hotel reps was first class and the best entertainment we have had in any of our holidays. The children's entertainment was all in English and very popular with the children's reps wonderful with the children. All in all I would have no hesitation whatsoever in going back to this hotel next year.

my wife and i have just spent the last 2weeks at the calypso hotel.this has to be the worst hotel that we have had the misfortune to have stayed in.when we first arrived the hotel looked to be of a reasonable standard.thats were it ended.the staff at reception were so rude.we then received our rooms keys and were told that we would be based in calypso 2.as we went to our rooms the smell that greets you when you come out of the lift is that of a dirty mouldy smelly carpet that had been there for years.the room was above the main stage area were they have the caberet every night of the week.so if you are one of those people that like an early night forget it.the maids must be the quickest that i have ever seen.they took less than 10 miutes to clean the room.the bath was at no time cleaned. we ended up doing it ourselves.
the food was well lets just say eat out as it was terrible.be careful when you buy a drink at the bar as it is very expensive.they were charging £1.50 for a small glass of cola and £2.80 for a pint of lager.if you have to drink here wait for happy hour.beware of the vending machines they are a rip off £1.50 for a can of coke.the shop just around the corner charges 50 cents.

just returned from hotel calypso on arrival was informed i was staying in calypso 2 what a nightmare on entering the calypso 2 it smelled dirty lifts had been vandalised , the filthiest dirtiest carpets in the corridors ,the room smelled dirty the bathroom was beyond belief , pubic hair on bidet and toilet, someones toenail clippings on floor, a clump of white gunge on the floor i can only imagine what it was , brown gunge in every corner, filthy flush button it must never of been wiped clean for years and human excrement on the tiles. the bedroom was filthy too, clumps of muck and dust all over the floors they must employ the laziest maids ever,so i demanded they moved us the siesta rep was verygood but i was informed i had to show the housekeeper and rep the problems which i did and was moved into calypso 1 the next morning this block of the hotel was fine but i could never ever stay at this hotel again because i could not be guarenteed not to be put into calypso 2 . please if you are considering going to this hotel think again because i found it unbelievable that this is a 3 * plus hotel there are much better cleaner hotels in salou please avoid this hotel so you are not dissapointed when you get there as you may not be as lucky as me to get moved if i hadnt of been moved i would of had to return home it was that bad . calypso 2 is so bad it remided me of a run down block of flats on the roughest housing estate in the uk i cant believe tour operators take good money off you and have the audacity to expect you to stay in the calypso2 because i know they wouldnt stay in it .

We stayed at the Calypso hotel for our first visit to Salou.
What a great place for everyone to stay.Me and my partner had such a great time there. The entertainment was great we had Chinese acrobats, Grease, We will rock you etc.
There were 3 bars in the complex, 2 for the family and one sports bar which was packed out for the Man Utd vs Chelsea game.(we are both 22) .There was so much food to choose from at meal times and they often had themes nights like Chinese, Mexican etc and the desserts were just amazing : )
The room was immaculate and modern, the towels were changed everything other day and it was spotless. There is a tv in the room but it only showed BBC1,Sky News and German MTV but that was fine as i didnt miss the soaps : )
The staff were very friendly and always said hello or good morning to you.
The Thomson reps were great as well as they advised us on all of the great excursions to go on.I recommend the 4X4 adventure and the Catmaran experience as these were such good value for money and lasted for most of the day, the guides are all english and are full of facts about the town and surrounding places.
There was a 5 minute walk to the main strip of bars, pubs etc. There was not much else to do other than walk into the town at night-this got a bit tedious by the end of it all as you see the same thing but least it was better than the UK.
Loved this place will definetley go back again!

Just back from Salou. Found calypso a very nice hotel. Didnt no what to expect as we weren't here before. Staff nice and friendly. Room were basic but comfortable, cleaner came in daily and were very nice. Location was excellant as it's only a few minutes walk from the pubs and shopping areas. Beach is about a 10 minute walk but with all the shops you dont find the walk going by. Only problem was at the pool where people reserved the sun loungers for hours with there towels and staff didnt remove them. Didnt have a meal here but had a few snack at the bar and they were fine ~ Overall i'd come back here again

Stayed in this hotel for one week with three other girls. Having read the reviews we were not sure what to expect but all I can say is that the hotel was good. It was clean and was a great complex. The food was ok and there was always something you could choose from. The hotel was in a great location - shops and beaches only a couple of miuntes walk away. Would recommend this hotel especially to families with young children. Staff were helpful and rooms were cleaned every day.

Just got back from the Calypso and got to say rooms were great, breakfasts lovely, pools clean and great complex. The only downside was they dont unlock the sunbeds until 10am by which time there is a mad rush for people to reserve them - some of who dont ever use them which was rather annoying. Overall the hotel was brilliant, plenty to do and the cleaning staff did an excellent job. Entertainment very good and bar staff very friendly. Really near to all the shops, bars and restaurants and the beach is only a short walk awake though it does get very very busy.
