Went to California Gardens hotel with...
9 / 10
Oct 2007, Miss N Willis

Went to California Gardens hotel with my sister 22 , my mum 46 and myself 19. I was very worried after reading some reviews on this hotel complaining about staff and food and bed shelves but I have to admit it was one of the best holidays I have had in Spain!
The hotel was well situated with 10 min walk to the beach and Porta Ventura and only about 15- 20 mins to the Spanish side with an extra 10 mins to the train station!
The hotel had a lovely reception and friendly staff that speak English! The food was good and they had meat cooked fresh in front of you every night and there was a wide range of food to choose from!
The night club across the road only opened on Friday and Saturday nights and didn’t start till about 1am but it wasn’t really loud and I slept through it anyway. The walls in the room are very thin and could hear the man next door snoring!
In September it is mostly old people on holidays and the entertainment was suited to them but we still went down to have a laugh and sip a few cocktails will playing cards and watching them dancing!
The rooms were very clean and the bedrooms did not have a shelf above the bed! They have a computer area downstairs but the prices are awful. There is an internet room beside the supermarket across the street which is extremely cheap!
I plan to go back next year! I loved it!

I have been on many a holiday but...
1 / 10
Oct 2007, Mrs S Bridle

I have been on many a holiday but certainly would NOT go back to this hotel. The resort was lovely, but the hotel simply awful.
We arrived at 9am on Sunday morning; I waited and waited for the receptionist to look up from what she was doing, she didn’t even say good morning let alone a welcome to the hotel. We were then told 'go away, come back at 12, your room is not ready’.
We weren’t offered a breakfast - although the dining room was open. We returned at 2pm, and they couldn’t find the key to the room so had to wait for 20 mins for them to find spare ones.
I couldn’t believe the room; so very basic, no fridge and no remote to the TV or the air conditioning. No details in the rooms to describe the hotel times of the restaurant and bars. No hair dryer and no towels for the swimming pool which I was led to believe would all be available.
The food was indescribable. Breakfast, no other eggs but fried daily, 3 choices of cereal - all the same during the week. You even had to lay your own table and for evening meal you had to get your own drinks (even water) from the bar. If you like chips you were on to a winner.
We didn’t sleep Thur, Fri or Sat as the nightclub opposite had thumping music till 6 in the morning and the guests then started to go home - let’s say quite jolly.
We were due to leave at 7.30 in the morning and asked what would happen with breakfast to be told that as the restaurant would be open till 8 we would have to have a breakfast box and pick it up from reception at 7am. When my husband went to get them he found the restaurant had been opened for the French who were going home as well.
So like idiots waiting for our boxes we could have been in the restaurant getting a hot cup of tea and something to eat.
I would not recommend this hotel at all.

This Review will concentrate on two...
4 / 10
Sep 2007, Mr S Brown

This Review will concentrate on two main areas: food and amenities and hotel accomodation. Firstly the food was horrid; be it pasta dishes, meat dishes or english dishes - they were all bland and tasteless. Even the puddings were awful how you can mess up jelly is beyond me. Avoid meal times at all costs, there are plenty of good food outlets in Salou offering good value meals for all the family. The beach front restaurants are superb but obviously pricey, but what a view and there’s always McDonalds where surprisingly it is easier to get served than in England.
The amenities in the hotel are at first glance excellent, nice reception, three lifts although very small and prone to breakdowns, and superb entertainment area, very modern. When you get in your room that’s when the problems start; there were three small beds pushed together and the balcony area is totally unsuitable for children as the balustrade is very low with large gaps at each side. Please keep the patio doors locked. There is a busy nightclub opposite but with the air-conditioning on you cannot really hear it. With the air-con on the room is freezing and is really smelly. The rooms are cleaned daily to a high standard, beds changed and towels changed every other day which is nice. The hotel caters for a large variety of nationalities be it english, spanish, swedes or russian –they are all here.
The problem being the entertainment is solely aimed at the spanish with spanish ballroom dancing and performers only. Not once did I see a english variety act there, although I suppose you will not be going on holiday solely for the hotel entertainment. The hotel is situated about ten minutes walk from the beach. It is on a busy road so beware the spanish do not have to stop at zebra crossings, and do not seem to stop at traffic lights sometimes either. Be patient and careful though and you’ll be fine.
There is a supermarket opposite which is really good value and the fruit is wonderful, please try. Overall the holiday was spoilt by the food and noisy room but I would definately recommend Salou, just not this hotel. So 7/10 for Salou but only 2/10 for hotel.

Disgraceful! Like most holidaymakers...
1 / 10
Sep 2007, Mr Stephen Brown

Disgraceful! Like most holidaymakers read the reviews for California Gardens Hotel with some concern, all I can say is please do not go here.
First impressions were very nice, nice entrance and easy booking in, then to the room, with two adults and a two year old child to be placed on the fifth floor facing the disco opposite is a bit much.
The room was tiny just three single beds placed together which moved around the tiled floor when you sat on them, there was a small balcony with a three foot fence with one foot gaps at either side, needless to say we did not venture out. Please keep the patio doors locked at all times, the door to the room had no internal lock so had to keep the childs pushchair against it to stop him from running out of the room into the busy corridor.
The room as I mentioned was opposite the flashback disco, which opened at about twelve till six thirty and was really busy at weekends, we drowned the noise out with the air con, the only problem being it smelt horribly of pee, so we had the air con on to drown the noise out but had to get the big blue furry covers out because it was freezing even though it was 27 degrees outside, so don’t expect a good nights sleep.
We went half board and the food was horrific, I had two meals there that’s all, just because money was getting tight ,both which consisted of bread buns and orange juice, I am not a fussy eater but I could not stomach it, some people were tucking in but I don’t know how, I cannot stress how awful the place was.
The pool was very rundown with large two inch ledges to the poolside great for stubbing your sunburnt toes on ouch!
The entertainment consisted of Spanish ballroom dancingx3, Spanish kids discox2, Spanish singer x1 total rubbish, totally biased to the Spaniards who were extremely ignorant, saved up all year, glad to be home.
Please like I say do not go to this hotel its terrible, Salou itself is a lovely place just a bit boring if you have very young children, hope this review helps, so many bad reviews cannot be ignored.

Second time writing this as I...
8 / 10
Aug 2007, sangel222

Second time writing this as I accidentally deleted the last one. I would like to say that this hotel doesn't deserve the 1/10 as given by some!
The entertainment at night was certainly not for the Spanish as one reviewer mentioned- it was very touristy, brit pop and brash. Either that or aimed at children.
The hotel certainly deserves the three stars, the decor in the reception and bar was very tasteful and modern and it's probably the rooms which bring down the rating.
Rooms: Pleasantly and standard decorated but a little bit small for three people! Still, we tolerated it, not like we were spending the entire holiday in our hotel rooms.
Watch your head!
I recommend you pull your pillow down to avoid hitting your head on the shelf above the bed! You can rent items such as cd and DVD player, mini fridge and you must pay for the use of the safe -18 Euro and another 10Euro deposit-returned on check out. TV already in room.
Some things were a little old fashioned about the room. The telephone for one. We could not call reception on the telephone but it didn't really matter, if you want reception you go down to reception basically.
Air conditioning did what it was suppose to, rooms nice and cool although please remember this- you MUST have the balcony door completely shut before you put on the air conditioning or it will not work. You will know its working because you will hear it and the little red light will be on!!
Maintenance: When we arrived our door knob was broken, this was fixed the next day and we hadn't even mentioned it to the hotel staff so I thought this was good.
The flushes on the downstairs toilets were not attached when we arrived but this was also fixed during our stay. One problem was that the trip switch in our room blew when we tried to use the hair dryer (quite funny as we've had the same problem at home!!! -not related to our hair dryer though lol). Although the trip was fine when my friend was using her straighteners.
Also, when we arrived the table in our Balcony was broken; this was also fixed on the second day. A problem was the lift, the censors don't seem to work so well, as it closed on my mum when she tried to walk in leaving a bruise! It will be fine as long as nobody presses any of the floor buttons before you step in or out!
Pool: Pool was a nice size. There were two. The larger had a smaller enclosed shallow area for young children. Problems were children jumping in and splashing or played will beach balls over your head!! Loungers were also always claimed with towels, their owners nowhere in sight-probably down in Salou for the day! We chose to use the beach often.
Beach: Lovely, very busy though but it didn't really matter-loungers always available! It costs 18Euro to rent three loungers and a parasol for the whole day. Water was nice, sometimes there were waves which was quite fun. Beach quite empty at night time, nice for a walk.
Night-time hotel entertainment: Really aimed at the tourist who wants popular music from home, not really Spanish entertainment and not our thing. We chose to find other entertainment in Salou.
Noise in hotel: Hotel entertainment ends at midnight each night, after this there really aren't noise disturbances and we weren't disturbed by the night club mentioned before we left- also we had a room over the pool adjacent to the night club.
You shouldn't be disturbed unless you choose to go to bed early, I recommend going for a walk on the beach or for a drink - Talelia-I think that's its name-is a nice place for a drink.
If you continue round, walking past this cafe around the beach you come to more Spanish orientated restaurants - quieter and closer to the sea with a lovely view of the lights of the protruding bay ahead.
Location + Salou: Very good location, near to numerous shops including a twenty four hour Supermercat shop - there are a few of these, look out for the one that says its 24h on the door!
Hotel was literally ten minutes from Port Aventura- to get here, walk out of the main building into the pool area-walk to the annex building and out the doors into the street, turn right and just keep walking until you get to the sign which says Port Aventura.
Hotel is also 5-10mins from the beach- it was mentioned to be a busy road but really it's not bad -there is a Zebra crossing and lights- be warned that in Spain pedestrians don't have the right of way at the Zebra crossing so you have to wait for the traffic to stop and the lights to change. There are lights at every busy crossing.
There are numerous different bars and restaurants - lunch was about 20-30 Euro for three people so certainly very reasonable. To put it into perspective that's approx 13-20 pounds sterling.
Salou had mostly souvenir touristy shops but often ones that also sold nice little pieces of jewellery-again not dear. There were also more high street type shops selling loads of Betty boop stuff and other clothes shops - some more boutiques like also selling perfumes and Chanel and Dior make up.
Housekeeping and cleaning: Hotel was very clean, very well kept, as were rooms at all times.
Food: Great selection of food, all very nice, tasty, well cooked. Each night a chef cooked something in front of you at the grill such as burgers, roast beef. Even with this loads of other meats were available like roast chicken, pork, also available were lots of salad, soup, pasta, lots of cake, fruit, chips etc.
There was something for everyone and it was of a very good standard. The dining room was never too busy and was well organised. Be warned, at breakfast time the milk beside the cereals is WARM MILK, if you want cold milk, use the bottles beside the tea and coffee machines.
Transport: Really everywhere in Salou is within walking distance. We did take a bus to Cambrilles one day and found this a bit confusing. You buy your ticket on the side that the beach is at (or on board), it costs 1 euro 35 cents for one for Salou-Cambrilles. The bus to Cambrilles stops on the other side. Standing on the other side, facing the road you walk right and on past mac donlads till you see the large silver/red pillar thingy... which is a bus stop! We didn't take a taxi.
Rep.: We booked with Airtours and our rep. was very friendly, very helpful and always available. I can't complain! Everything in that area was very well organised.
While I can't complain about our own rep the rep on the bus to the hotel was misinformed, she told us the dragon khan had nine loops (it has eight) and called the new ride (Furious Baco) by the wrong name - this wasn't really a big deal but still, she wasn't as well informed as the others.
Excursions: We took an excursion to Barcelona one day. We chose the one with free time. It was very well organised and the guide new exactly what she was talking about. She described everything in great detail. Three hours was all the free time we got, not really enough for a good look around the city but still - we didn't mind as we were quite tired anyway. If you do go make sure you get to the Ramblas and the Sagrada Familie. -this was my third visit to Barcelona!
Port Aventura: Fantastic! I recommend going at night as it's less busy. Night ticket gets you in from 7pm - midnight and costs 25 euro per person. I highly recommend riding the Dragon Khan - I was on it just as the sun was setting and the Spanish sky was purple- lit by the Chinese lights :) -Amidst being flipped upside down on the coaster I actually enjoyed the scenery!! If you can pluck up the courage you really should ride it, it is a fantastic experience!
Went on Furious Baco first - this ride may not look as threatening as the Dragon Khan but I do not recommend it for young children simply because when it takes off it goes from 0-135 km/h in 3.5 seconds which is very very powerful and shoves you back in your seat-I couldn't even breath at first! It's very thrilling but probably not suitable for young ones-it only lasts about fifteen seconds in total and we queued for about an hour lol.
Dragon Khan is more fun but Furious Baco will really WOW you and the pictures are usually hilarious! If you have to choose between, go DRAGON-fantastic!
I didn't get on many rides this time but I would also recommend the Tutuki splash and the Rapids! I also unfortunately didn't get on Stampida!
We ate in "Marco Polo" which was quite nice and we didn't have to queue for too long. Really a good place if you’re very hungry and just want a burger and a very large coke as we did!!
The fireworks, music and water display was magnificent!! STAY FOR IT! I also love the Port Aventura theme- a rendition of "How long have you ever seen the rain" which they play as you leave the park.
To conclude, I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday. The Spanish are very friendly people in most areas. The hotel staff were very friendly, it was well staffed and all areas of the Hotel were being cared for at all times.
There's a nice atmosphere about the place, there are always people about. I can't believe how some reviewers stated that nobody spoke English, this isn't true at all!
I doubt there will be anything you need the reception staff at the hotel to deal with that they will have difficulty understanding. I think I've covered everything.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and resort. Hope you enjoy your hols.

I guess anybody reading these reviews...
7 / 10
Aug 2007, Mr D McCarlie

I guess anybody reading these reviews are doing so because they now know what hotel they are booked into, not because they are looking for a hotel.
We paid £1,200 for half board and this was the hotel they gave us. I did think the whole holiday was pricy for what we got. After knowing where we were staying, I checked these reviews for what to expect. All of them are varied and valid comments, to be fair.
Whoever designed the beds must have been drunk. Imagine having a ledge six inches above the pillow. You couldn't avoid banging your head each time you moved. I have a ring of bruises right around the skull, from whacking the head when you lie down, whacking it again when you turn round and again when you get up. It's just a stupid thing to have above a bed.
The bed was more like a hammock. You lay down and the middle sagged and the edges rolled up to actually almost cocoon you. Maybe this was to offer some protection against the shelf. Definitely well worn out mattresses.
We never thought to request a pool facing room so it was obvious we were going to get one facing the main road. Frankly, it's a 50 50 chance you're going to be looking over the road. To be fair, this did give us some privacy.
However, it is not at all easy to sleep and stay sleeping. Fortunately, we had the foresight to take earplugs and they were very welcome - definitely recommended.
The food was, well, an acquired taste. Given that they were catering for over a thousand guests, there was always plenty to eat. We avoided the queues by getting there early.
There was variety and the menu was changed daily. The orange juice was a disappointment though. Instead of freshly squeezed Valencia oranges, the stuff came out of a machine. It tasted odd and I realised why when the machine obviously ran out of powder and water came through instead.
The salads were okay, the sausages had a very spicy flavour, the meat dishes were perfectly okay and the pasta was fine. After a few days we had to eat something different and there were plenty of other places to eat - at a cost. We did miss proper coffee though, theirs came out of a machine. Powder again - even the milk was powder.
The reception staff were great, especially the girl at the second block. She gave me directions to get to the station for the Barcelona train. If you fancy a day trip to Barcelona then get the train. It's a short walk along the beach to the end and then up a street. You cross the railway to get to the station. Day return was 11,60Euros and took about an hour and a half.
The bus was almost 19 Euros and tool well over two hours. The train was fun but it fairly threw you around when it got up speed. Forget it if you have a wheelchair though, at the end you have to drop almost two feet to get to the platform. Best train is the 10:15, plenty of time to eat breakfast and wander along.
Salou had plenty to do, Port Aventura in the morning and the beach in the afternoon. Beware the traffic though, they are crazy drivers. I've never met so many folk blasting their horn for no reason.
Pedestrian crossings are also lethal. Just because the green man is lit doesn't mean it is safe to cross. The big roundabout near the hotel was incredible and you really see a different standard of driving.
I was amazed at the number of people with broken legs and arms. Obviously a testament to the crazy drivers and the numerous tripping hazards. Wearing sandals was not such a good idea with unexpected steps, holes and ledges. Beware some of the one inch ridges on the walk around the path at the pool.
We heard as many ambulances as we did irate horn tooting drivers, so they obviously have a busy casualty department.
A tip for others though. Don't change your currency in the UK, get it in Salou. Only take a handful of Euros to keep you going until you get there. Rate from Thomas Cook was 1.37 and the rate from a shop near the beach was 1.435. On £500 that's an extra 32.5 Euros.
Also, get your E111 over the internet, it comes within a week even with the postal strike that week. Get your Port Aventura tickets from their web site too, you get a colourful E ticket which we had no problem in getting the pass with, although you need to print the e-ticket and take it with you.
Would I go back? California Gardens was no different from the hundreds of other hotels in Salou.
I guess I would go back simply because I know what to expect rather than take a chance on somewhere else.
I hope they listen to all the comments about that wretched shelf above the bed though.

We came back last week from this...

Aug 2007, scully27

We came back last week from this hotel and would not go back again.
The food was the worst we have ever had. Restaurant staff so miserable. Not one of the staff for the 2 weeks we were there smiled.
The maids and reception staff were very friendly. Hotel very clean, rooms cleaned every day.
Entertainment was very poor... mainly for the Spanish.
We go to Spain every year but most people in Salou were so ignorant, not friendly at all.
Back to Benidorm for us next year... different place altogether...much more friendly.

When we arrived our room wasn't ready...
1 / 10
Aug 2007, Mrs A Woodward

When we arrived our room wasn't ready which is the first time this has happened to us, wouldn't have worried too much but our daughter of 4 years old was burning up, all I wanted to do was to get some calpol down her.
But we only had to wait half an hour anyway, we had a drink by the pool and it seemed fairly quiet which surprised me for the time of year.
The lifts in the hotel were quite small, the rooms are very small with air conditioning which was useless, my hair dryer on cold heat was better!
Very noisy in the evenings, kids running up and down the corridor's. Bad language being used. We ventured out in the evenings, as the hotel entertainment was crap. Rovers Return is a really good family pub, kids played musical chairs, pass the tomato. We also played Bingo, Quizzes and Deal or No Deal.
We have put an official complaint in against this hotel as one morning I found a dead woodlouse on my sausage, luckily I didn't eat it!
The morning after this incident somebody had pooed in the children's pool which took the Lifeguard about 45 minutes for it to be removed. The pool wasn't closed and cleaned like you would have in this country, there were children still playing in the pool while the poo was still there!!
We stayed in a 2* hotel last year in Mexico, which was ten times better than this 3*, we would never stay in this hotel or Salou ever again. The beach wasn't much better, wherever you laid down to sunbathe groups of lads thought they would play football right next to us which was really annoying. On our last day of the holiday there were lots of litter in the sea, even a sanitary towel!
Our day trips were very good we had 7 days for the price of 3 at Portaventura, it's much cooler in the evenings, we done all rides and all shows, but you really need the 7 days to do everything there.
We went to Montserrat which was brilliant, some breathtaking views, done this trip through the rep, but you don't get enough time there. They combined the trip with another (which we didn't know about when we booked it) to Torres which is a vineyard; it was a bit boring for the kids.
Also went to Barcelona to visit Nou Camp (Football stadium) had photos with Ronaldinho which are really lifelike even though it's just a cardboard cut out.
Went shopping in Barcelona, really pricey as it's mostly designer shops, also saw the Magic Fountains which was fab.
We did find people in Spain really rude and ignorant, no please, or thank you, no smiles, pushing and shoving, really bad road rage. The hotel staff were just as bad, if you can avoid breakfast between 9.30-10.00 than do so, as you will have to queue like we did on several days, the restaurant isn't big enough for the amount of people they have staying at the hotel.
Also one side of the hot food closes down about half an hour before the restaurant is due to close.

Aug 2007, Mrs J Findon

The hotel was pleasantly clean and the staff efficient and friendly. I didn’t like the half board but that was my choice I will go all inclusive to my next holiday.
Unfortunately I would not go back to the hotel as nice as it was it claimed to have a entertainment programme but found this and the kids club very poor.
The staff at the kids club were very pleasant but very little was done to get kids to join in my family are used to more livelier hotels with much more going on and perhaps this happens at all inclusive hotels rather than half board hotels.
It’s a nice hotel plenty of people around but for me lacks any get up and go!!!! The food was nice plenty of choice at night but the breakfast got a bit boring with the same things every day and far too many sausages!!!!!
There were not enough sun beds for the amount of people there and these were booked very early so getting one was a nightmare!!!!!!
A good hotel if you like to entertain yourself and do your own thing but certainly not one for the more livelier families!!!!

I've just got back from just short of...
8 / 10
Aug 2007, Ms H Jonse

I've just got back from just short of 2 weeks at California Gardens with Ferris Holidays.
Good holiday and there was good and bad about the hotel...however mostly good. Staff excellent, from the reception staff to the cleaners to the waiters to the "food hall". All very pleasant.
Agree with comments about the sun beds being booked up by just after 8am - very annoying and made us spend most of our time at the beach. Even saw some prats putting their towels down the previous evening...after 12 midnight!
We did have some Dutch youths make a nuisance of themselves when passing one evening at about 11.45pm when they banged our door and a couple of others but after yelling at them and someone must have reported them to reception as it was dealt with by staff immediately and no trouble again.
Credit to the reception staff, they don't seem to tolerate any nonsense, after all you're there for a pleasant holiday. Even had an apology from one of the culprits. Is a family hotel and I think that was an exception. But I suppose you expect some exuberance once in a while, it was no more than that, with no malice.
Food, served buffet style, was varied and catered for all tastes. However I've been self catering on previous holidays and I'll be doing that in future, but that is just personal preference and no slight on the Hotel. I don't like the regimented approach.
Breakfasts were varied from cereals to eggs on toast, to bacon and egg, croissants etc etc. I think it was varied enough and you didn't have to eat the same every day. We did eat breakfast out a few times just for a different atmosphere.
Salou the resort I found to be spotless with the Council/munical workers out at all times cleaning and tidying, even up and down the beach during the day with their bags collecting any rubbish. I've been to Calella a couple of time and Salou is a bit more upmarket.
Trip to the Nou Camp and Barcelona Centre was good. Used the local bus service who run tours there and were much cheaper than via the reps. Very informative and very pleasant.
Port Aventura. I found to be brilliant and I was very impressed. My young son was in his element. Previous review mentioned that staff don't speak English. I found that they did understand basic requests which is all what we expected. So what if they don't speak fluent English, we are in their Country after all. They do have to communicate with tourists from many countries, not only the British.
We did go to one of the water parks, not the one attached to Port Aventura, but the one in La Pineda, I think Aquapolis or something like that. Again a great place to go. One annoying fact again as picked up in an earlier comment is that the Spanish do seem to have different views to us about queues. Family, friends, everyone seems to join them and when you felt you were at the start of the queue the next time you look up you are well back. This wasn't the case at Port Aventura as you tend to be treated like cattle anyway (like in a bank queue with the zig-zagging barriers).
Overall I would certainly recommend the California Gardens as a hotel and Salou as a resort. If you are a gang of lads or girls it is not for you, it caters more for families. Loads of kids about.
Would I go again? Yes I would. Would I use Ferris Holidays again? Definitely.

Had a terrific laugh at the account...
3 / 10
Jul 2007, Mr Alex Thornton

Had a terrific laugh at the account published here on 30.7.07, I agreed with so much of what the lass said about the hotel, rooms, neighbourhood, theme park, however I have to add my tuppenyworth. I was there for a week in July, just back, and took my 2 young ones, girl(10) and boy(14). Holiday Overall Rating = 8 /10 Resort Rating = 7/10 Theme Park = 9/10 Hotel CG = 3/10 Ok in Order, California Gardens Read the brochure, read the blogs so thought I knew what I was getting into. Phoned the hotel beforehand to arrange an appropriate room with a poolside view (aka the brochure pic !). Waste of time. We had a good view of, err, not a lot of anything really. Looked like an abandoned apartment block opposite. Rooms : small/cramped for 2; even worse for 3. Rooms cleaned every day, much welcomed. The shelf - managed to whack my head of that blasted thing 4 times during the week. Telly was never on (pointless). Privvy was clean. Dining room: H/B but was awful; ghastly, degrading sub-standard high velocity high throughput joke parlour. Food was quasi (queasy?)-passable considering the enormous number of people it had to cope with. Get in, find a table if you can, get out, fast! Awful experience. Pool: Good for kids to jump into, err that’s it. Poolside : cluttered with the usual sun-gonads and beached whales. At 6pm they cleared the area for the nights activities; the mess of fag-butts/drink containers/detritus was unbelievable! Do people really believe that this behaviour is acceptable ? Could not tell who was actually worse, the Brits or the russkies (many many of them). The sun bed/towel issue was seriously annoying. I wanted to go down after the selfish bleeders 'reserved' their sun beds, strip off the towels and throw them all into a large bin. Pity. Staff : Mostly nice - I felt sorry for them. Bar Prices : Go somewhere else, anywhere and it will be far cheaper. Poolside 'cafe/bar' : Snack foods burgers etc, truly the worst pile of horseradish I have ever seen; amazed me that people actually bought - and ate that muck! Evening entertainment: witnessed it once, never again. nuff said. Salou Town : nicely laid out, beachfront was really impressive, particularly the fountain displays. Enjoyed walks up and down. Most annoying thing : Many appeared to be on a major smoking mission. Thoughtless foul-smelling bunch. Spoiled the air, the beach and any cafe visits for ice-creams etc. I do hope the Spanish bring in serious smoking regulations soon and banish the puffers. Tat-shops: all run by the indo-pak consortium, which is different from Magalluf as they are all run by the triad there. Day trips etc went on the jeep safari. Enjoyable adventure which would improve tremendously if they got the TOTAL pricing correct. Felt pretty light in the pocket at the end of that one. Market : took the normal bus up to the market at the neighbouring resort. Not bad, typical, some bargains. Thomson rep : new girl, tried her best. Hotel location : fine for situation midway between beach and Porta Ventura. Beach : Large, long and away from road. Sand and low gradient int the water. Could walk out quite far before chest reached. Very good all round. Spoiled by the zillion fag butts. Town streets : typical Spanish resort. Watch out for the movable tiles on some pavements. Bars : many and varied. Went to O'Briens down towards the roundabout from the CG; read about it on a blog - it was excellent, good food, good prices and a nice place to watch the world go by. Ambulances ; Heard at least 5 - 10 per day humping along, sirens blaring. Port Aventura : spent 1 day and 2 evenings there; brilliant time! It caters specifically for Spanish, however this did not really cause me any great concerns. Total thrill palace! Did not manage only one of the rides (barrels), but enjoyed the rest - many times. Remember to wear comfortable footwear as you do a lot of walking. Food was okay, generally fast-foodish, entertainment was superb, shows, events, happening all the time (laughed my socks off at the missionaries in Far West land). Aqua park : err ran out of days ! Reus Airport : converted hanger. Entirely unsuitable for the volume of traffic passing through. It was a joke - even worse than Aberdeen airport which is saying something! Best Memory - walking along by the fountains in the evening on the promenade Irritating Memory #1 - waiting in a 45 minute queue for the barrells ride in Port Aventura in the afternoon; the heat was grim, the people crushed into a small space, the smell of concentrated humanity a bit much to take... I left... Irritating Memory #2 - Looking out from the balcony everyday to see the amount of rubbish / waste thrown out of the rooms in the levels above us. Usually goon contenders for this were the young (male) brits and the Russians. Must be a culture thing ?

If you cannot speak Spanish, don't go...
7 / 10
Jul 2007, Miss Sam Wilkinson

If you cannot speak Spanish, don't go to Salou! I can speak enough to get by, which was lucky, but even then I struggled as they don’t even speak proper Spanish, they speak Catalan! Some of the residents don’t even class themselves as Spanish!
The hotel
The hotel was okay, although the apartments were across the road and the pools we both by the hotel, so anyone staying in the apartments had to cross a road to get to them... which must have been annoying.
The pool area was okay, although I tried to play ball in the pool with my boyfriend, and we weren’t allowed, although other rules such as reserving the sun beds and diving in seemed to have been forgotten!! The sun beds, by about 8 am I think were all reserved, so much for the rules!

I went half board while I was there, and by about day 5 I hated the breakfast, it was greasy, cold and just disgusting! The chef looked like she had crawled out of her grave to cook for us! So from then on, I didn’t eat in the hotel for breakfast.
I found a wonderful little English cafe about 5minutes away! Phew!
The dinners were okay, well if you like pasta and gammon and shrimps! One night I decided to have a salad, although when I sat down to eat it I discovered that it was saturated in some crappy dressing which was revolting, so I left it all!
Also, every night there was different pasta, be it spaghetti or ravioli etc. It always tasted the same! So yeah, that got annoying and you seemed to dread dinner time! Also, I didn’t realise that drinks are not included on your half board or all inclusive package! You have to buy them separately, its 1 euro 60 for a coke, and up to 10-15 for wine.
The rooms were alright although the broachers advertises it as having a shower, yes it does have one, but it doesn’t have a clip so it can be on the wall, so I make-shifted it so it went over the rail with the shower curtain so I could have a shower.
Also the bathroom door looked like someone had decided to play target shooting with the amount of polyfiller hiding holes in it!
Also if you like to receive a very painful headache every morning, you’ll love the beds! There’s a little ledge across the whole wall that you always hit every morning! Its only about 5 inches wide, but god it’s annoying!!
The television in the room looks as old as the chef! There is usually only one English speaking channel, bbc world which is a looping news channel, so you hear the same thing about 100 times a day! The phone on the wall is one of those which were popular about 40-50 years ago.
All the fittings, plugs etc all looked really coloured as though they had been there since the beginning of time!
I had asked when I booked the holiday for a double bed, but I couldn’t have that, so I thought, fine ill push them together, but that didn’t work as the maid came in everyday and separated them everyday! Annoying that she was! She also kept taking the shower down!
The nightly entertainment was the usual holiday trash, although allot of it was in Spanish and seemed a bit bland, I didn’t really go to the holiday entertainment, I didn’t see the point.
The staff were okay. The reception staff were probably more useful than the reps to be honest!! They were friendly, and when I saw one of them in a bank, she even said hello which was lovely!
The waitresses although, were like vultures, always sifter your plate! Which annoyed me loads! But then on the morning I was checking out, I had a run in with some Indian guy! He wouldn’t give me back my deposit for the safe key, even though I gave him the key back! He swore at me and told me he hated me and he hated the English etc. but I got my money eventually! After about 25 minutes of arguing like hell!! But on the way out I got to tell him what I really thought of him!
The hotel is located next to a night club called Flash Back, so normally if you get a crappy view, you won’t hear it, but if you get a nice view, you will! And it is open until 5am as well!!! So beware.
Oh yeah! Another thing! Beware of the sun beds as loads of them were broken!
Port aventura
As a park, owned by universal, I was and still am tempted to complain about the park.
No one speaks English! Shock horror! Or at least they chose not to, and they are very favouritism towards the Spanish, they had an offer on in the park, where I you bought two large drinks, you got a free bag, although nothing was said to anyone other than the Spanish!!!
Also the ride that the reps couldn’t wait to inform everyone on he coach about, the furius, was always breaking down... about 10 times a day!
Oh and there are so many queue jumpers that the workers seem to not see!!
Every show which had talking in it was in Spanish... including the can can show, where some woman was singing all that jazz, in Spanish!
In an American themed area of the park, even there shows were all in Spanish, yeah I know it’s in Spain, but I would have at least thought, they would have done, one English show, one Spanish or something.
The food at the park is disgraceful, three times I returned the meal and it still came back cold. I was not impressed!
The reps
Don’t book excisions with the reps! They over charge you and rip you off!! There are all the same excursions with a company called plane whose main office is on the front opposite Mac ds, and do them for about half the price of that of the reps!
eg. the shopping trip to Barcelona, run by the reps was about 30 euros, but the one by plana was 18 each! The bonavista market by the reps was 11 each, by plana was 3.5 each!

So be careful, also they will tell you that the caribe water park is crap in comparison to aqua polis. That’s because they earn more from selling aqua polis tickets, caribe up at port aventura is great if you only want to go for a day or something and have tickets for port aventura anyway, and its only 11 euros to get in for each adult and I think its 6 for a child. Whereas its 22 for an adult for aqua polis.
The area
There are so many people giving out flyers for their restaurant etc, it’s worse than London!! You dread walking past some of them as you know it’ll be hurtled into your face!
There’s loads of little shops near the hotel under the wooden walk way, but when you’ve been in the first half a dozen, you’ve basically been in them all!! The beach is really nice but gets full so quickly, same as anywhere really. The supermarket, basically across the road from the hotel is great for bits and bobs, coke, etc. Which you can pick up for about 1 euro 50, about 90p. So yeah its good value.
Overall
It was a good holiday. Yeah I have critised it loads, but it needed to be to, but it was a good holiday that I enjoyed allot, but I wouldn’t go back, the Spanish ruined it!! They are arrogant and unhelpful!!
Thanks for reading.
