Upon opening the front door a wall of heat issued out of the room. It was ridiculously hot, partially thanks to the fact someone had left a spotlight on for some 16hrs!!
I left my partner trying to get some sleep whilst I went looking for the hotel mentioned in the note - and several beers, which I duly found. The hotel (Elvita) manager was great and very reassuring, as were the couple from Bristol propping up the bar, Dave and Maria who also told me how lovely the resort was.
I contacted Thomson’s 24 hr helpline at 05:00 to request a move the following morning, retrieved my partner and wondered off to the beach to watch the sunrise. I contacted Thomson again at 14:00 as nobody had been in touch regarding a move and when they did offer alternative accommodation it was at extra cost (400 or 800 euros) on top of what we had already paid.
Eventually we caught up with the rep, who said she would check out whether there was an upstairs apartment available at Sunview or rooms in the nearby Olive Gardens Hotel (same price). We never heard from her again! We knew the studio above us was empty and on our flight home I discovered that the Hotel did have rooms. Obviously Thomson are more interested in cashing in on distraught holidaymakers than ensuring they are happy.
Once we realised Thomson didn’t give a stuff about one couple amongst thousands we resigned ourselves to our fate and took up the Elvita managers offer to use their facilities.
From then on our experience changed. The locals were so warm and friendly it was easy to relax and enjoy our stay. I’ve heard about Greek hospitality and have now had the honour of experiencing it myself.
The village of Lardos is like something off of a western set, but don’t let that put you off. Its full of great restaurants and the welcome is always warm. Stick to Greek dishes and you won’t go far wrong. We were really impressed at the local cooking. Similar to Italian, simple but very tasty and very filling.
We have every intention of returning, both to Rhodes and the Lardos area, but will give the Sunview Studios a miss and will most likely never use Thomson again!
