Andros is reached by ferry from Mykonos and the crossing takes in excess of 2 hours. It is probably the journey that has allowed this island to retail its tranquillity and authenticity.
I stayed in Batsi, which has the best beach, which is wide with golden sands and is great for taking it easy. It also benefits from the Melterni winds, which helps to cool you down in the heat of the day. There are a selection of good Tavernas serving fish caught by the local fisherman and also a couple of very good bars.
The island itself is very green and sparsely populated. I stayed at the Villa Rena, which is on a hillside and is reached by 60 odd steps so not suitable for the less mobile. It has swimming pool and poolside bar and the owner is very hospitable. The rooms themselves are basic but comfortable and air conditioning is available at an extra cost.
The village is quaint with alleyways and you still see the locals sitting outside playing backgammon. The holiday was enjoyable but I did find the steps rather a bind and tiring. When I return I will look for accommodation more on the level. This was my only criticism on what was otherwise a fabulous holiday.
