Good location but terrible hotel
3 / 10
Jul 2011, magic123

I have just returned from Salou after going there with my daughter and some friends.Salou itself is lovely, beautiful beach and close to Portaventura and water park.
The Hotel experience on the whole was negative ,Food terrible-as a vegetarian i didn't expect wonderment but i did expect a fair selection of food -how wrong was I!There was nothing for my daughter and I to eat expect for cold salad and pizza everynight.Even the rice had fish or meat in it.The food was very bland and the same every night-a few curries, spanish vege paella would have been nice. Our friends who eat meat also hated the food.
Staff in the restaurant were rude and arrogant and when we complained about having to pay silly prices for drinks in the evening did not receive an apology.Pool is small and sunbeds dirty.Entertainment was very 1970's,some of the dancing acts were ok though. We would not return to this Hotel.

We have just come back from spending two weeks at this hotel and we had a great time. We have 3 kids aged 6, 3 and 1 and they didnt want to come home. Staff were really friendly, hotel was clean, food was fine. For a 3* hotel you couldnt ask for much more. We would recommend and would book at this hotel again.

A reasonable hotel. The place has a HARD bed its ok but the pillows are like rocks. T.V Has 2 English broadcast channels if you want to watch it of a night. Average pool water polo and kids water polo. The hotel is only a few minutes away from PortAventura one of Europes biggest theme parks! Food is BRILLIANT 5 star. Daytime staff are helpful but nightime staff can not speak ENGLISH! This hotel is OK. Just book with Thompson.

the belverdere a clean hotel and that's about it .my wife and i spent two weeks there with our two grand children. the staff are useless( if you are british).it was full of bad mannered old spaniards (who hate the british). and every night there was atleast a coach load of arogant, bad mannered, loud, and ignorant spanish teenagers who ran wild every night.......the ones i blame for my holiday being ruined is first choice this hotel should not be in a british brochure.they are quick to get your money off you so why don't they get their finger out and do some thing about this hotel......p.s i put a complaint in about this dump ,but guest what still have'nt heard back off any one ....we will never use first choice or thomson again.

Holiday good, hotel awful

After booking with thomson we were told that we would have 1 double bed and 2 singles but when we got there it was 2 doubles and when we went down to report it we were told that it was ok for my 16 year old daughter could share a bed with her brother who was 12 at the time, the room was full of damp on the walls reported it and 2 days before we were leaving they offered us another room. The lifeguard stopped the kids from playing ball in the pool, best bit about the hotel was the 2 kids entertainers and in my oppinion could not be faulted but the adults entertainment was diabolical. Best entertainment we found was at the titanic bar just around the corner the food monday to thursday was always cold and on a friday it was hot and it was their special, breakfast was ok if you were constipated, cleaner smoked on the balcony. Highly recommend any other hotel as for the water park next to porta-ventura i would recommend aqua-landia as the one next to porta-ventura wasn't that good for teenagers but was ok for younger children. Porta-ventura is ok if you like to stnd in queues.

We enjoyed our stay

The hotel was clean and air conditioned.
We arrived at 10.30 am and had to wait until 1pm for the room to be ready.
The rooms are good, cleaned everyday, has a TV with CNN channel for the English.
There was plenty of food served, breakfast was cereal, crossants including chocolate ones, cakes, cooked breakfast, fried eggs and omlettes cooked freshly for you, sausages, fresh fruit which was good, even bubbly to drink. We alway enjoyed it.
For dinner there was a good choice but often the same things. The meat could be tough but as it was a buffet we just threw it away and chose something else like chicken.
Choice of salads and again fresh fruit, I liked the vegatables, sometimes a bit over cooked but they are catering for about 1000. The Pizza were cooked freshly in the Restaurant. Desserts were cake, ice cream, jelly, blamange. Overall the food was good as there was a selection to choose from.
The entertainment in the evening started at 9pm with the childrens disco and at 10pm they had different acts each night including Tom Jones type act, Spanish Dancers, Juggler duo act, Karaoke, mexican dance group. The hotel was a mix of Spanish, Danish, Russian, French and English so the entertainment was aimed at everyone. Therefore the Karaoke had Russian singers, Dutch singers and some English. We enjoyed listening to the various languages and entertainments. They were not aimed at the English in an overt way, but we were in Spain and for us, we quite liked the entertainment the Salou Hotel provided.
The entertainment was outside and if your room faced on to the pool/bar are I should think it could be a bit noisy.
If you prefer an English type entertainment there are alot of places in the town which are only 5-15 mins walk away.
The pool was adequate, lots of room around the pool if you included the bar area
but around the actual pool area got busy very early.
The inside bar was usually empty, chairs not that comfortable. There was a piano bar, no one played the piano and not many people went there but the TV was on for football and was quite comfortable.
Had two pool tables, about 5 computer one euro for 10 mins.
Reception staff were ok, they helped us when asked and gave us information on how to get to Barcelona by train.
Hotel is situated 15 mins walk to Portadventura, and 5 mins walk to shops and pub and about 15 mins walk to the beach.
We found it family friendly resort.
We were a little concerned reading some of the reviews, we were worried about theft so got the key to the safe in the room and we made sure we kept all our valuable with us. We were on the 5th floor. Thankfully we didn't loose anything.
We enjoyed our stay at Belvedere, plenty of food, clean, air-condioned room and a good location.

Not Bad

We arrived back today from the Belvedere and overall the experience was fine. We read the reviews before we left and many of them lead me to believe that many of the reviewers had expectations beyond what you can reasonably expect from a 3 star hotel.
Food.
There has been a lot of commentry that the food is not up to standard. For a 3 star holiday hotel you cannot expect a la carte cuisine for an occupancy of 1000 odd people over 3 meals a day. We were half board for b/fast and dinner.
There are 3 serveries in the centre of the dining room, plus a pizza/pasta servery and a hot plate. One servery has a salad cart which has just about everything you could want on it. The middle servery usually has the deserts which usually are a mix of blancmange, custard, and rice pudding dishes along with tiramisu and other similar deserts that change on a daily basis as well as a selection of yoghurts and ice cream. The end servery has a selection of hot dishes that include chips, potato dishes, a hot veg, annd a couple of meat dishes as well as a fish selection. The hot plate would serve roast turkey/beef as well as fresh cooked fish or chicken. One night we had paella and another night had a BBQ/burgers. Fresh pizzas are cooked continuously.
Breakfast consists of a continental selection of cold meats (mostly for the Germans) and cheese, pastreis and bread, and a full English. The hot plate serves fresh cooked pankakes and omlettes. Cereals and toast are readilly available.
There is also a children's servery which offers a mini-version of the full menu.
Drinks do have to be bought seperately and are a bit expensive. Service is usually quite ood and Snr Jose was incredibly helpful as we have 2 small children who can be a handful so he always saw to it we had an appropriate table.
Pool
This is too small for the number of people in the hotel and seems to be a lot busier than the pools in the neighbouring hotels. The opening hours are 10am to 7pm which I would have wanted extending if I had had my way. I suspect a lot of guests wait until after the evening entertainment is finished and then they pull a sunbed out (which are put away each night) and put a beach towel on ready for the morning - then they don't rock up until mid afternoon sometimes. I would have liked the hotel to do something about that (such as chaining the sunbeds up until pool opening time for example) but they didn't seem to see it as a problem.
Reception
This let the hotel down a bit as some of the receptionists were not particularly helpful. Albert and Jose-Maria were quite helpful as they spoke the best English, the others were mildly indifferent. Every check in time seemed to be chaotic as the reception isn't adequately staffed to deal with multiple check-ins, and with people arriving at any time of the day the best option was often to go and do something else if you need reception when people are checking in. The main problem was the key-cards which seem to fail often, especially if you put them in the same pocket as your mobile phone.
Bars
The most popular bar was the pol bar. The cafe/piano bar was often empty. The bar staf are helpful and friendly.
Entertainments
If you hate the "Chu Chu Ua" song (and if you don't know what that is, you will by the end of your stay in Salou) then you wil go clinically insane. There are events running through the day, but the main ones are in the evening starting with the mini-disco at 9. Our eldest daughter loved this and the guy who dances on the stage was brilliant with the kids and probably the best act of the night. The rest of the ents are of varying standards. We had Vanessa Mae and Tom Jones tribute acts as well as a dance routine and a comedy act that was about as funny as a colonoscopy. I'd sugest sticking around for the kids disco then going out.
Rooms
Spacious enough, clean, and adequate. Housekeeping work hard, but I would seriously reccommend geting a room safe for valuables.
Security
It seemed to me to be a bit too easy to get into the hotel unchallenged and I heard of a couple of thefts and a break in during the week we were there. I had my wallet stolen on the train to Barcelona that almost left us stranded there without any cash, and pick-pocketing and theft is rife. When I was in the police station one couple told us that their hand lugage was stolen as they got off the transfer bus from the airport.
Thomson Rep.
Steve was an absolute star! He sorted a room change to a quiter room for us (we were right over the stage the first night) and helped us deal with the police after my wallet was stolen. He was around when he said he would be and gave us his mobile number if we needed him any other time. The Thomson 24/7 help line though was worse than useless.
Overall it was a decent week. We didn't expect miracles from the hotel (being a 3 star) and were pleasently surprised. Most guests were a mix of Spanish, German, and Russian with the Brits making up a minority. Salou was a great resort, and very family friendly (i.e. not full of drunks/youths) and the beaches were clean and expansive. We had a great day trip to Tarragona (a mini-Barcelona), but we didn't go to Portaventura as our children were to young to appreciate it.

Thieves - lock up all your belongings in your room!

Aug 2009, Salou Holiday

I have recently come back from a stay at the Belvedere Hotel in Salou. I have one thing to say... make sure your valuables are locked away... my mobile phone was stolen out of my handbag in the wardrobe that I had forgotten to lock away in the safe. The only person who could've done this was the shifty cleaner who wouldn't look you in the eye when you walked past. I complained to reception and they were very rude and didn't want to know even though I was visibly upset by this violation on holiday. I became very paranoid since then and locked everything in my suitcase even my clothes, make up etc. nothing was left out in case the thieving cleaner thought she could help herself to my other belongings. The holiday rep at the hotel, although very friendly, seemed to not really want to help as he kept giving me the brush off. I must've spent between 2-3 hours on separate occassions trying to make a formal complaint but to no avail. The rep wasn't there on times he said he would be. I am very angry because it certainly ruined my holiday experience and recommend strongly that you do not book this hotel, if you decide to then please take locks for your suitcase and lock all your belongings away. The area though is fantastic, I would defnitely go again to Salou, we particularly loved Portaventura, the beach, other bars, market etc.
We never stayed once in the pool because by 9am all the sunbeds were taken and the pool was not big enough.
The food was adequate but by the last night, I couldn't stand the same food again so we went and ate out to a restaurant and enjoyed that meal out. The drinks are very expensive too.
As I said, I worked very hard all year for this weeks holiday and am sure all you readers do to and do not want any of you to suffer the way I have so please think twice before booking here. Trust is the most important thing when you leave items in your room, the cleaner should not be snooping through handbags and helping herself to your things. I hope this review has been of some help and I have stopped you making the wrong decision. Enjoy your holiday elsewhere if I was you.
