It was a family holiday with our 6 years old son. We were on half-board. We arrived the hotel around 11pm and could have something to drink and eat at the restaurant. The meal was always delicious and had big selection of food. The hotel staff was helpful and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. The location of hotel was near the grey sandy beach.

Not the best of hotels by any means, albeit cheap

To start with, Georgioupolis is a lovely place, very quiet, small and relaxing, with a nice general overall feel. However, I would not recommend Fereniki Hotel. Upon arrival, we were directed to our rooms, which immediately made us think that we had been given the wrong room in the wrong place. It smelled (drainage in the bathroom), which gradually got worse through the week we stayed. The bath was dirty, and had only a shower head, with no curtain etc. There was only one large towel for the both of us, and when we went to get another from reception we received death stares. The said towels, were also NEVER changed once in the week we stayed, with us having to go retrieve our own towels, which were only hand towels. The first night, whilst in the shower, a light bulb exploded in the bathroom and glass went in the bath in which I was standing. If I or my partner were standing in front of the mirror at the time, this could have caused serious injury. The bed covers were changed only once, and the sheets were not changed at all - it was hard to to tell on most days that the maids had even been in our room. Also, one night we were awaken at 4.45am by loud, repeated knocking on the door. Once opening it, it was for a wake up call. One that we had not asked for. Also, the electricity of the entire hotel went off at least twice a night before 12am, for around a minute each time. When in the bathroom, this is quite dangerous. The overall demeanour of the staff (and indeed other holiday makers, who were predominantly German and cudn't muster a smile when we smile at them) was poor, which is not what one would expect on a holiday, that is meant to be fun and relaxing for everyone. But as I said, we had an excellent time at the resort and would recommend it to anyone, the locals are friendly and it is perfect for young couples to relax for a week. Just look for other hotels.

Fereniki is very user-friendly with cosmopolitan guests-on my stay there were greeks, germans, danes, poles, english and russians there. In fairness this hotel is likely to best suit seasoned travellers to Greece (age range 30s to 70s;walkers & sun-worshippers) and young couples (18-25 of the courting variety).I would describe the accomadation as good functional greek i.e. big rooms, quiet location, very clean but with a bit of a lack of refinement-but what do you expect at these prices?! The swimming pools are excellent (there are 3)and not busy when I stayed with a sandy beach 200 m.The hotel has sorted out issues at Reception by employing an English guy (didnt get his name)but he was customer-focused,efficient and genuine with it.Best of all his polite attitude seemed to have passed onto the rest of the staff who were cheery to a man-a big improvement!
Fereniki is probably not ideal for families or those with stellar expectations but it is excellent value for money.I avoided the restaurant as it seemed too cheap to be true and there are excellent alternatives.Geogioupolis is such a gem of a resort with low-rise hotels, cosmopolitan and laid-back with 10+ excellent tavernas and fantastic access to the very best parts of rural Crete that I'm almost tempted to keep it to myself.

  • Advice: Beautiful unhurried village with the backdrops of mountains and sea.See you again in 2010!
  • Activities: The unforgettable fishing harbour with river running through and loudly-quacking ducks

do not go half board!

The hotel accommodation was adequate and located very close to the seafront so we have no complaints on that front, however the food was a different matter! We were half board and the taverna was a short distance from the room and served all the Fereniki complex. Food was served from 6pm until 8.50pm so we arrived to eat at 8.25pm but there wasn't much salad left and only 2 choices for main course and it was cold! We complained to the staff who's attitude was " we didn't make it" or "well we started serving at 6pm!" Who we thought was the restaurant manager came to see us but just gave us abuse and started shouting "Englanders", it turned out he wasn't the manager and was German! We complained at reception to the owner who apologised and arranged for us to eat our evening meal at another restaurant. The breakfast buffet is ok if you are German! The resort was fantastic and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet holiday without British pubs.

Apart from a problem on arrival, it is difficult to match my experience with that of most of the other contributors.
The Reception staff, although not first language English speakers, were helpful, courteous, and did speak English that was at least perfectly adequate for purpose, and a chat.
The room was thoroughly cleaned each day by two delightful young ladies, and bed linen and towels were changed daily [on one weekend, a day was missed]. I did suffer sunburn one day, and so stayed at the room. I can confirm that the cleaning took 20 mins per apartment / room.
I found the food to be excellent, especially during the first week, when the evening meal was "home cooking" which was very tasty, freshly prepared, and served in large portions. I am a veggie, but found that I was better catered for here than at many another restaurant I have eaten in. Breakfast was an excellent range of foods, and drinks including bread still warm from the oven, and the best honey I have ever tasted! The catering staff were helpful and polite, and the multi-lingual Restaurant Manager and other Table Staff always found time to have a brief conversation [in my case, in English] with all patrons each evening.
The room was large and adequately furnished, and had the usual self catering equipment, which was in good condition, plus a coffee percolator!
My only grumbles about the accomodation related to arrival, and then to insufficient sun [April remember] to power enough hot water for a shower on one evening. This was remedied when a fellow traveller [German] informed Reception. My difficulty on arrival, however, was more serious. I arrived at 2.30am, but there was no one on Reception until 8.00am. I thus slept on the floor that night! Had the rest of the holiday been less than perfect, I might well have allocated a much lower rating.
The village itself is really pretty, and there are some excellent walks, with obviously beautiful fora, and, if you take the time to look, some interesting fauna and history. The beaches at either extreme of the village are excellent, at least during low season. Public transport is clean and on time, with the bus stop being about 5 mins walk from the hotel. There are also car and bike hire options near the main square.

We were in the apartment section of Fereniki hotel, and I must say that I prepared myself on the very worst stay, because of the reviews on this and one other page, but I was plesantly suprised. The room was very big and clean, it was cleaned every day, the towels were fresh every second day, beds were also made every day and they change the sheets every third day. We were there for 14 days and I was satisfied. For the food I don't know, because we never made it to the breakfast, but for lunch and dinner there is many good restaurants arround, so it shouldn't be any problem. So overall it wasn't so bad that I expected and it's better that everyone has it's one experience.

We found some of these previous reviews totally unfair- we were treated well by the staff, particularly the restaurant staff who totally spoiled us with fabulous home cooked food every night. The food was brilliant- typically creten food, made with fresh ingredients and different each night. Georgios was really friendly as was his lovely Greman wife- although their English was limited, they will take the time to chat. We cannot praise the catering enough- but there were only a few people staying half board so early in the season, so we had an exclusive service.
The rooms were clean, but if you go early in the season, bring warm woolies as the rooms were very cold at night ( marble floors). there was an indoor pool which wasn't fully open and was also freezing- but later in the season it might be heated!
Views from the rooms of the snow capped White mountains were spectacular, and Georgeopolois is a very pretty town. If you go there, make sure you say hello and give some food to the little black and white dog on the beach- he stole my son's heart!

If going to Georgioupoulis for the first time please do not pay attention to the awful reviews.
We wnt in June 04,05 and have just booked to go in June this year.
Yes Maria can be a bit off hand, but she went out of her way to make sure that we got the room we had been in the previous year.
The rooms are cleaned every day and towels are changed mid week.
Georgioupoulis is a wonderful place for a chilled out relaxing holiday....Enjoy!!!!

Sadly the reviews about the Fereniki...

Oct 2007, Miss E Harris

Sadly the reviews about the Fereniki apartment are true. It seemed that only two members of staff had any grasp of English at all. In fact, all the posters for day trips etc in the hotel was in German. Nothing in English.
We arrived and had a rather unfriendly greeting from the reception man. He was German and said he spoke no English. He barked one word at us "Voucher" which it turns out we did not have. The rep had not supplied us with this paperwork. He finally wondered off to get someone who spoke English. She was a very pleasant girl and apologised for the German man's rudeness. We were shown to our room, and it had not been cleaned. We were told to wait one hour and come back. We did so, and the room had been cleaned albeit hurriedly. The linen left for us on the bed, had blood stains on...
After resolving this linen issue... we experienced the breakfast the following morning. Not good at all :( Wasps on the meats, and no real appealing food. We didn't go again.
Plus points :
The resort itself is gorgeous, and is very relaxing and had a sleepy vibe to it- Not many people around (low season) and we were pretty much the only English there -which was nice. Due to the lack of people, swimming pool empty most of time and no fight for the sunloungers. The beach was very nice and a little stroll from apartment. Plenty of eating and drinking places . Options to take day trips were on offer, and we went to a lake (freshwater) for the day and hired a pedalo which was great. We swam in lake too, I recommend it :)
All in all we had a very relaxing, enjoyable week away, and the temperature was lovely :) and got a nice suntan. Not too many mossies either :)
