Marina Riviera Hotel Reviews

Oct 2005, Mr J Gantly

Having spent a few days in Napoli we came south with no booking, and found this gem . The view from the breakfast terrace and the 2nd floor bedrooms is stunning, the few extra Euro it cost for a terrace is worth it. We were there in October, it was warm (20-25 by day)and... more

No need to worry
Having spent some time reading reviews about this hotel on this site I was somewhat apprehensive about the 5 days we had booked to stay there. The negative reviews made me think of changing the booking to another hotel. However I need not to have worried as the stay was great. Clean rooms, amazing views, typical continental breakfast, perfect location, friendly staff, big air conditioned rooms and quiet. Recommend to anyone (old or young- im 27)
Wonderful Experience
I've travelled throughout Italy for many years and can truly say that the overall experience at Marina Riviera was terrific. The beauty of the terrace is breathtaking with amazing sunrises and sunsets. You have amazing views of yachts and sailboats as well as the gorgeous historical town. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable with great views. My family and I found the staff to be incredible making us all feel like family and going out of the way to help us out in any way possible. The other guests that I met in the hotel were all having similar experiences as myself. I would definitely come back and have already starting planning to spend my next trip at the marina riviera.
Most wonderful hotel we've ever stayed at!!
I am not usually one to write reviews, but after seeing a terrible review on this site I absolutely had to act in defense of this wonderful hotel. I recently traveled in a large group of 9 for an extended family vacation, and we spent the remaining 5 nights of our stay in Amalfi at the Marina Riviera. From the moment we checked in (we had had a bit of a problem with being cheated from a cab drive from Naples), the staff was beyond welcoming and helpful. We were greeted by the lovely owner and a young man who helped us with our many bags- both of them assured us that they would help in finding a way to get to the airport at the end of our stay, and they were true to their word. The young man especially went well out of his way to do research for us (it was difficult finding a car as we were such a large group), and was one of our favorites out of the many wonderful staff we encountered. Each staff member throughout our stay, fluent in both English and Italian (all my family speaks both), were happy to help with anything or even just enjoy a long conversation with us on the balcony at night. We still cannot get over the warmth and knowledge of these people! We were extremely pleased with our rooms- yes, perhaps the twin beds were a bit smaller than at home, but in Italy this is the norm and the space we were afforded in our rooms was more than we expected. The gorgeous white tiles and white walls perfectly complimented the stunning view from our large window. Noise was not a factor- we simply shut our window and all sound was completely blocked out. However, we preferred to keep the window open and listen to the crashing of the waves and the sounds below us. The food at this hotel was better than we could have expected- the majority of memories we have of this vacation is of meals or sipping wine on the gorgeous terrace. There is a small menu, but every single dish is fresh, delicious, and unique to the area. In fact, there were times when if something wasn't available that we wanted, they would make it for us. They were extremely accomodating with cooking for my 18 month old nephew that was traveling with us, even going so far as cooking pastina especially for him. Breakfast especially was phenomenal. A wonderful buffet of fresh, local specialties such as arancini, frittati, and fresh mozzarella kept us full until lunch. Of course we sampled the many great restaurants around the town, but we enjoyed countless meals on the sunny terrace that were just as good. Amafli itself surpassed every other town we visited, including Positano and Capri. We enjoyed the beauty of the little town and also the unique beach. The hotel's location seemed to be the best in town, with access right to the beach and town easier than any other hotel. Overall, this was a wonderful vacation and hotel, and every single person in my party cannot wait to come back. I highly, highly recommend it, and I really cannot comprehend the negative reviews on this site. Believe me- those people are wrong about the Marina Riviera.
Mixed Stay
We stayed at this hotel for a week and had a very mixed experience. First the good news...the hotel is in a lovely location, just minutes from the port. The views over Amalfi are wonderful, during the day and evening. There is a superb terrace bar which overlooks the sea and beach, which at night in particular is very pleasant. The rooms (whilst small) are very nice and all have a beach view. Despite other reports on here, we found the breakfast to be plentiful. Now for the not so good....firstly, the staff (with only one exception - the porter) are unquestionably the most miserable and disinterested people imaginable. No smiles, no attempted pleasantries and in most cases no knowledge of the most basic English. The hotel is run by an Italian lady (who also owns another hotel in Amalfi), and her presence dominates. Her staff showed little/no interest in us, often not even acknowledging us when they walked past. The first night was on a Saturday and the room (60), was so noisy as the hotel is on a main road. We couldn't sleep until well past 3am, which is a nightmare when you are trying to relax on holiday. Motorbike after motorbike kept us up. We asked to move and to be fair, they changed our room without fuss, but how anyone else slept well is a mystery to me. There is no swimming pool, which is a major loss. The hotel do have deal with the nearby beach (the usual price is 9 Euro but residents get 7 Euro - this is not such a great deal as in the afternoon, the beach only charges 5 Euro anyway - 2 Euro less than the hotel deal!). The beach is crowded and is a stone beach - I personally found the stones sharp and unpleasant to walk on. The hotel does offer lunches, but they very expensive, and I would recommend eating at the nearby cafes, which for some foods are 50% cheaper. When the final bill came, the only copy went missing (our fault) and they wanted to charge us more - thankfully we found the original (there was only one paper copy for some reason), but it left a bad taste. Overall, I would not stay here again. The staff didn't seem to care, the room was noisy, few if anyone spoke English, there is no swimming pool and for the price there are far better (and more welcoming) places to stay.
Huge disappointment
We checked the Trip Advisor reviews and all of the details provided in the description of the hotel before booking the Marina Riviera for a week in June. On the basis of our experiences, I am writing this review to provide other travellers with some basic facts. The Marina Riviera has neither a pool nor a beach of any description. We were informed that they do have a solarium with a shower, which turned out to be a somewhat creaky decked area on the roof, with a number of beds and 2 tables with umbrellas. We had a good laugh about the fact that there appears to be a number of apartments above the hotel, and the Solarium provides a birds eye view of the occupants laundry hanging out to dry. We were also informed that the Hotel has an arrangement with a restaurant on the beach, whereby guests could have the use of sun beds on their area of beach for 7euro per day per person. Whilst the restaurant has a cordoned off area of beach, it is on the public beach which is very crowded and really noisy. There was a sign in the restaurant advertising a price of 9 euro per person per day, therefore we assumed that the Marina Riviera had negotiated a preferential rate for its guests. However on 2 separate occasions we overheard tourists, not from our Hotel, being charged 5 euro each. Also, this is a pebble beach, which proved painful for our tender city feet, both in and out of the water, so rubber soled flip flops are a must.. We booked a deluxe room, with twin beds and a large balcony. On arrival, our room contained what appeared to be one small double bed. I immediately referred to this and was assured that it comprised 2 twin beds and they would be separated when we went out. This did happen, however the result was 2 of the tiniest single beds that we have ever seen, with about an inch separating them. (By the way, I’m female and my friend is male; we’re not a couple, hence the twin bed request). The room was very small and decidedly basic, the balcony was far from large and the bathroom, although passably spacious, could do with some freshening up, décor wise. If this is deluxe, I dread to think what standard rooms are like. The breakfast was poor for a 4 star, with a very limited choice of options, which rather bizarrely included cold pasta dishes on most mornings. The one positive is that the 2 types of juice available were freshly squeezed. Again, we are mesmerised by the rave reviews about the breakfast, because it simply did not compare well with any of the other hotels that either of us has stayed at in Italy. This hotel has the most beautiful view, and a very good location, however it is more like a Bed and Breakfast than a hotel, as that appears to be all it offers. We saw no sign of any menus for lunch or dinner at any time therefore the public area was empty pretty much all of the time except breakfast. On only a small number of occasions did we see anyone even having a drink on their terrace in the evening, and then it was only 2 people. All in all, this hotel did not compare favourably with other 4 and 5 star hotels that either of us has stayed at in Italy in the past. We have read the rave reviews of other visitors about the beauty of this hotel; they far from match our experience. It may be fine for a night or 2 as a base for sightseeing, however we don’t believe it to be a suitable choice for anyone wanting a relaxing vacation for a week or 2. We would not consider returning to this hotel.
Wonderful location and breakfast!
My husband and I spent over a week of our honeymoon at this hotel in September 2006. The location is just wonderful - right by the centre, and the sea. The breakfast terrace is very beautiful, with a jaw-dropping view of Amalfi and the sea. The breakfast, made in the owner's husband's restaurant, was incomparable - very, very delicious! We stayed in a duluxe double room, which was very lovely (the view from the private balcony was incredible), and the bathroom was great. I don't think we could have found a better hotel in central Amalfi. We loved staying there.
Great location bad rooms
First the good points: Amalfi itself is beautiful - my favourite place on the coast - and this hotel is in a superb location only about 4 minutes from the main town square and just next to the sea. The breakfast terrace is also great, with excellent views of the town and beach. However... although the rooms are clean, they very are very small and pokey - really hot in the middle of the night. You can't open the window to cool the room as the outside lights are like search lights! The beds are also tiny and uncomfortable - the smallest bed I've slept in since university! The plumbing is very loud, so if someone flushes the loo in the night everyone wakes up as the water goes right behind your ear! I would return to Amalfi, but you should think very carefully about staying in this hotel if you want to get any sleep.
Excellent hospitality
The Hotel Marina Riviera was a wonderful place to spend two nights. Extremely friendly and helpful service, great view of the Amalfi coastline, fantastic gourmet breakfast (one of the best I've had anywhere), and comfortable rooms. Would recommend this hotel highly to anyone staying in Amalfi.
What a Great Place!
What a wonderful place. It is magical. We only stayed for two nights (April 18th and 19th) The views were spectacular and the hotel staff was exceptional. One person, Raffele was such a friendly and helpful person. From the minute we arrived, he was willing to help out with anything we needed. He made us feel right at home. He also helped to provide my mother, who just retired from work, fresh fruit in our room and beautiful flowers. The rest of the hotel staff were also exceptional. Very friendly and eager to please. What a great breakfast buffet they provide as well, overlooking the Amalfi Coast! Another important thing about this hotel is now clean it is kept. It is immaculate. It is well taken care of. It is by far the best place to stay if you are staying in Amalfi. Close to everything. Get a room with a view, I believe Room 68 was the room we had, what a spectacular view of Amalfi and the ocean!!! This hotel is a gem and should be included in any trip to Amalfi, Italy.
Great Hotel
My wife and I stayed in this marvellous hotel for three nights. The room was spcaious, clean and quiet with a balcony overlooking the Amalfi harbour. Even though we were on a busy road, the doors kept the noise to an absolute minimum. The hotel's public rooms are a treat. There is a lovely terrace overlooking the harbour for breakfast and drinks as well as a dining room for breakfast. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient, especially since the owner/ managers are on site during the peak periods. The walk to the hotel from the harbour takes five minutes, partly along a busy road without sidewalks; however, a little common sense will see you through. There are a number of good restaurants withing a three minute walk of the hotel. All in all, an excellent place to stay.
