1st time to Zante and struck lucky. Was last minute booking and chose Sydney House. Had upstairs apartment with seperate bedroom and two beds in the main room. 2 adults and 2 children. Cleaned every two days but no sheets or towels changed. Bit taken aback at this as the family are very friendly! Run by mother (Maria) and they also own the supermarket next door- really handy. The accomodation is basic but clean and comfortable and yes the family do talk loudly at times but thats the Greeks for you! They are helpful, friendly and don't bother you. If you need anything you can find them and they sort it. Sydney House is right on the beach. Two eaty places beside it and the main street/town is 5 mins walk away. Get a fan for night time and keep shutters closed during the day if you're out as the mosqitoes wait for you! If its any consolation, I have booked a week in September in same place. It's quiet at night yet only a stagger from the main tavernas etc. Locality was all families and couples and very relaxed. The beach at Sydney House is large pebbly type. Turn left for much of the same or right for sand. Left is quiet and peaceful, right is busy and funpacked. Will let you know more after my September visit.

This year was our 2nd year in Alikes and Sydney House. the accomodation is basic, but that's greece. As other reviewers have said, if you want a little more than feeding your self, look for a hotel.
Alikes is a quieter resort, but most of the shops and restaurants have reasonable levels of english spoken. If you're looking for a less commercial resort, come to Alikes.
The short hop along the garden path to the sea is a god send. The shore is a bit stony but when you get past the short stony section its sandy. The supermarket sells aqua shoes, which are better value than any you would get in UK. If you want a better beach, walk a little further into alikes along the beach and it becomes sandy.
The family who run these appartments are wonderful and the tiny supermarket next door is good. Both are run by same family. If you ask for something, the family will do their best to help.
In 2007 my mother-in law had a medical problem whilst there, and was offered a lift, for which they wouldn't take any money etc, into Zante town.
The airport has improved, the new terminal has fully opened with arrivals & departures. You will have to stand, but at least this time its in an air conditioned check in hall. there is a limited number of seats in the check in hall, but the depatures lounge is good, with lifts, stairs and one escalator up to the duty free and a cafe/ snack bar.
Be warned, the food in the departures lounge is EXPENSIVE!!!!
The terminal is nice and modern now. Not quite up to UK airport standards but not far off for a tiny airport.
If you need assistance make sure a rep knows about it straight away, as it might take them a long time to arrange it.

7 of us in total stayed at the sydney house , basic , but thats greece for you, it is a lovely place , we are returning next year ,it is in a very quiet spot , but it only takes 5 mins to walk to the town centre, which is a nice friendly place with some night life but not over thr top , like some places .3 of us are in our late 30 s , with 4 teenagers with us aging from 15 to 18 and they all loved it too.the pool which is about 100m walk up the beach is very nice , with good selection of snacks , the staff at the pool bar are very friendly , we have stayed in touch with them ,and cant wait to go back ,we spent most of our evenings in a bar called iris bar , its about a 15 min walk but worth it ,great staff , tina that owns it with her hubby is english , her hubby is greek , they have even got a little snug , with a range of games if that takes your fancy ,round the back is the most amazing mini golf coursers that they built them selfs ,take a look on the iris bar web site,! .......we love alykes , no problems or moans at all , until we were departing , the departure side of the airport is what the locals call the cattle shed , it is really tiny , only 2 desks . and only about 20 seats and there were 4 flights all waiting to go out , that was the only let down to our holiday ,

We have just come back from Alykes, and had a wonderful holiday. Like everyone else has reviewed; the place is very basic but clean, we were given bath and hand towels and room cleaned every 2 days. I am sure if you need clean towels they would provided them as the family that own the apartments/supermarket are lovely. We spent many evenings in the Virago bar, (1 minute walk) before and after walking 10 minutes into the town. Tried many of the tavernas and all the food was great.
Beach lovely and although stoney "Perfect" as at bottom of garden, sunbeds 5 euros for 2beds if you want them. Sun Hot at 5pm and we were swimming at 8am until 8pm. You can walk out for ages before it goes a bit deeper, perfect for children. Did go in swimming pool once but prefered the beach.
Would go into the town and see Jim for tours as we were not impressed with our t.c rep. Look around first as many different options offered by lots of different operators, do buy first thing you see.
I dont recommend the "Shipwreck" trip, as we spent 8 hours on a tour boat (inside) and the shipwreck boat is only 80years old and has graffiti all over it.(Had a 50 minute swim stop but took 10 mins to get off the boat) Maybe hire a small boat and see it. Or maybe go to "Blue Dolphin" boat tours? they leave from the town, we had an hours bus trip to the port to then spent 8 hours on the boat... that was the only down of the whole holiday. Driving in Greece is scary, buses seem to have overall ownership of the roads and drive fast! They beep to let you know they are passing you, not to say get out of the way. Still would not like to drive in Greece! But many tourists did and I did not see one accident.
Hope to visit again and would recommend Sydney Apartments and Akyles to anyone.
Airport good and air conditioned.
