If you're planning to get away to Canada this year, you might want to consider taking a trip to the West coast and beautiful Vancouver.
Perched on the Pacific seaboard, the geography of the city ensures that you can move comfortably between warm downtown and skiing at Grouse Mountain - or, a car ride away, Whistler.
I visited the city over Christmas and was pleasantly surprised to find that many stores and tourist attractions were open for business. I spent some time at the 555ft Harbour Centre Building on Boxing Day, visited the Museum of Anthropology at University of BC, checked out the Granville Island market for fresh fish and fruit and wandered around the up-and-coming Kitsilano suburb.
Transport in Vancouver is frequent, cheap and clean. I used both the Metro and the bus service around town and up to Grouse Mountain.
For £30 a night for a queen sized room, The Inn and False Creek was great value for money. After a long flight I was greeted by a welcome package of shortbread and oranges and friendly reception staff. The only downside was that the walls of the rooms were quite thin; however this wasn't too much of an issue over the quiet Christmas season.
If you don't fancy hotel food, historic Gastown houses a plethora of restaurants and bars from pasta and pizza joints to pie and ale houses - there's something for every palate!
Vancouver is a vibrant, welcoming city - thoroughly recommended to anyone who wants to see the best of Canada.
