My partner and I have just returned from the Volakakis apts and if you are placed in rooms 2,3,6 or 7 then be prepared. Trying to sleep in these rooms is like trying to sleep on the hard shoulder of the M6. We have stayed at Volakakis before but were lucky enough to be given apt No. 5 which out of the 8 available is probably the best one. (No.1 being directly below). We didn't realise that this problem existed until we read Mrs Fosters report two weeks before we went this time. We were allocated room 7 and whilst this is not the worst room becasue of it's first floor positon, it is still extremely noisy! Also there is NO balcony, you have to sit on the landing outside your door!
The worst room to get allocated is room 2. The window is at street level and you can shake hands with passing traffic!!
We complained to the Manos Rep at the welcome meeting and whilst she showed no compassion she was able to move us to apt 5 for our second week.
We are very seasoned travellers to Greece and have been visiting this country since 1989. We love the rural & rustic feel of old greece and whilst the age of technology is everywhere most places we go have managed to keep the balance right. However Volakakis is still in the 1980's but unforunately at 2008 prices! One week in August 2008 will cost you £820 for two people!
Manos are very guilty of not giving out the full information in their brochure reports. Whilst they obviously can't tell lies they are extremely lenient with the truth.
In conclusion and to end on a high, Kalives is a fabulous resort for a beach holiday. The beach is superb and the sea is excellent for swimming and children. There are some superb tavernas serving very good food at very reasonable prices and the bar in the village square is a must for sitting and people watching! The locals are very friendly and have a great sense of humour.
We will return to Kalives but with our old friends Kosmar.

Do not book a studio room in this accommodation. There are 4 studio rooms out of 6 where it is impossible to sleep due to the fact that the rooms back immediately onto a major road, which is extremely busy with traffic 24 hours a day.
It's like you are in the road not on it. It is pot luck which room you receive. My partner and I only managed 2-3 hours sleep per night during our first week, whilst in one of these road fronting rooms.
The Manos representative was fully aware of the problem.
I complained about the room as soon as I arrived and the representative offered to move us for our second week. We were so totally exhausted by the time we moved rooms, that we felt as though we had not had a holiday at all.
Cleanliness is also a big problem. Rooms were only cleaned twice a week which as you can imagine was a health hazard in relation to the toilet bins.

I've actually stayed in this accomodation 3 times. The first 2 times were in the better studios that have large balconies with sea views. The last time it was in one of the accomodations that backs onto the noisy main road. Yes it is noisy but for some reason it didn't bother me and my partner all that much. Having said that, I ALWAYS take ear plugs. I also have to say though we had both the windows and the blinds closed all the time. Of course now, (2009) those who search the web or Manos brochure or visit Thomas Cook website will see that this accommodation is no longer available so it wont be an issue except those who wish to travel independently.
