My wife & I booked our first holiday...

My wife & I booked our first holiday abroad for many years and were a little apprehensive about Parque Mourabel considering the very mixed reviews, but the two weeks cost seemed to be excellent value so we decided to take a chance.
I can only say that we had a marvellous time during our stay there. We thought the food was above average, with three choices for all three courses on the supper menu and cooked in tasty sauces. The breakfast was pretty routine, but the friendly staff would vary it if requested.
Indeed we found the staff helpful and chatty despite some language difficulties - all goes to make the holiday.
The accomodation, one bed apartment, was spacious, clean and tidy. The bathroom and kitchen looked as though they had recently been refurbished so we were perhaps lucky there.
The room service was excellent, in fact too many cleaning visits! I agree the mattresses were hard and the beds were narrow.
We took advantage of most of the tours, (payable), that were offered as there was not a great deal to do at the complex. The Marina, beach areas, and local town were in reasonable walking distance but minibuses are available for the less mobile.
We were blessed with some glorious weather during our stay, no rain and not a cloud for ten days! Lucky? I don't know but the locals seem to think the weather pattern in the Algarve has shifted to warmer climes in March so it might be worth swapping that 4 hour flight to Teneriffe for a shorter one to Portugal.
Bad points? Not many but not a holiday for children, but for people who want to chill out from the stress and strains from work and routine life at home.
Everything is expensive in the Algarve, food, clothes and gifts. Need to shop around in Vilamoura and at nearby local towns to find the best deals. The hotel bar was fairly reasonable but not cheap. The house wine was good and cheap by the bottle! Local bar in walking distance was very good value, and Hilda our host was excellent.
Why the 8 points rating? Place could do with some decorating inside and out, night entertainment in hotel could be improved, hotel tours and transfers pricey for local areas, internet access not private.
We are looking to book again next year so we are either easier to please or we hit a good fortnight.

My fiancee and I arrived at the resort at lunchtime. We were not expecting particularly high standards as we had read reviews made by previous holiday makers. However, although we could not check in until 4pm as our room wasn't ready, the member of staff on the counter was pleasant and helpful.
When we did get our room we were surprised at how big it was. We had only booked the holiday for two people, but the apartment could house six. We had everything we needed and clean towels were left everyday.
The apartment was a pleasant walk away from the marina, although a courtesy bus was available three times a day.
We only ate in the restauraunt once, the meal was tasty and not overpriced. All the staff we met on our holiday were polite, friendly and always very helpful. There was one family at the resort who had been staying there for 8 weeks, and she couldnt rate it enough. Same goes for us. The holiday did not cost us much, and you certainly get what you pay for, however, we got more than what we were expecting.
The only warning I would give is this. . . We stayed in Oasis Village. The apartment was huge, clean and had pleasant views. However, we were provided with a courtesy room on our final day in the Parque Mourabel side. What a difference! There was no balcony, the room smelt musty and I would not have felt comfortable using the cooker! I could not wait to get out of there! Luckily for us we were on the other side. So remember, if you are going to visit this resort, stay at Oasis Village!

Do not go there. Amazed at some of the favourable reviews posted. Parque Mourabel apartment was musty, dirty and very out-dated. Clearly no attempt had ever been made to clean the bird droppings from the balcony. Unfriendly manager/caretaker and family sat out late every night for chat and laughter without any consideration for paying guests. Apartments are well off the beaten track although there are a few shops and bars nearby. All in all, a very poor experience.

My wife and I visited in wintertime (UK) and what a nice break it was.
Not a cloud in the sky - 70 degrees.
As for the hotel, although a little off the beaten track in relation to Vilamoura harbour (about 30 min walk) although the brochure said 10, the hotel was clean and the staff helpful and friendly. The food was good, with plenty of choice.
As for Vilamoura as a resort, it is ideal if you are a golfer, with at least 5 top class golf courses within walking distances, coupled with consistently good weather I would recommend both the hotel and resort.

Well below average is all I can give...

Well below average is all I can give it. We visited with a young child and frankly children are either not welcome or just very poorly catered for. There are no changing facilities and when I asked the staff I was told I can use the men’s toilets. Now the toilets are an experience in themselves as the smell of urine is so strong it'll make you hold your breath. I reported this on the first day and nothing was done about when we left. I guess I was supposed to change him on the urine soaked floor!
I didn't find the staff particularly friendly or helpful (with the exception of the cleaners) - we had a meal that came with a plastic something in it - when we returned it we got a somewhat frosty reaction. No offer of replacement. When we asked for the bill we were still charged for it. In fact I didn't find the Portuguese people particularly friendly - on the surface they are but it doesn't take long to get below that.
We went for a snack at a nearby snack bar and was the only people at the counter - the guy serving busied himself arranging things - when a Portuguese fella joined the queue he started serving him - when I challenged him he just continued to serve the other guy - odd - friends visited a few days later and exactly the same thing happened.
The rooms are OK - old and tired but OK - don't expect to sleep though as the beds are monumentally uncomfortable (different rooms have different thickness mattresses!). There is a very coarse surfaced road running across the rear of the hotel and if the beds don't keep you awake the traffic will.
Check your bills!! Most restaurants in the area added a little something to the bill - only a couple of Euros here and there but it gets irritating. One restaurant even had the correct bill ready for us after adding a couple of drinks and bread to the bill.
The children’s pool in the Pe da Lago is occupied by a particularly irritating child that lives on the complex. Sit and watch as he empties the pool of all other young children! Biting spitting hitting. Nice touch.
So no we won't be returning to Portugal anytime soon - hope you have a better experience.
Jardin Autos - thanks - great little car great service when we got a puncture.

Don't Go Here!
We arrived to a musty, grim, dirty-feeling, nasty, out-of-date apartment at the Parque Mourabel and wanted to move out straight away!
However, I talked my boyfriend round and told him to give it a chance. 3 hours later the music started from the on-site bar directly below us! This continued until past 12 midnight. Locks and cupboards were broken, we didn't feel the apartment was secure or safe and it smelt.
I cannot understand how any travel company could let a client of theirs stay in the apartment that we were first given.
The next morning we made a fuss and were eventually (after many words of complaint) moved across the road to the Oasis part of the complex....what a difference!! It was clean and modern and felt wonderful, especially after our first day's experience.
However, there was no pool available on this part of the complex and we had to return to the nasty side to use the pool area there....which was of course cracked, old and not particularly clean (with a lovely layer of grease from sun cream and dirt in general floating invitingly on the top).
Don't get me wrong, I have travelled extensively and even worked abroad in Portugal and Spain for years, so I'm normally not over critical. This apartment complex was horrible!
The only good thing about it was the courtesy bus that takes you away from it!

What a fabulous holiday. Oasis...

Nov 2006, Miss L Greenwood

What a fabulous holiday. Oasis Village apartments are brilliant, clean, tidy, well equipped, lovely views & close to everything. However, I would recommend that you ask to be put in Oasis Village as opposed to Parque Mourabel or Pe Do Lago. I seriously cannot fault our holiday in any way.
The complex is close to the marina, only about 3 euros in a taxi if you don't want to walk. Same with our favourite beach - Falecia Beach - which was about 10 mins walk away. Receptionists were extremely helpful & we especially enjoyed Boizzao, which was a Brazilian restaurant on our complex. (Look out for Boizzao's pool, its fabulous!)
We only paid £630 (inc. flights + 1 bedroom apartment) for both of us for 15 days & it was worth every penny. Deffo going to go again next year!!!

We arrived there as a group of guys looking for somewhere to sleep after a hard days golf. What a result.
The rooms were clean. Slightly outdated but clean. Service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Restaurant was great as was the entertainment. We are booking again for next year. I say go and stay.
It was worth every penny and we got it really, really cheap.

I, my wife and our 2 young children...

Jul 2006, Mr S Morris

I, my wife and our 2 young children have just returned from Parque Mourabel. Here is my honest review. The hotel rooms rightly deserve 3 star status. They are fully equipped with even basics like an iron, hair dryer etc. The overall decor of the hotel is quite shabby and would merit 2 stars. The staff are friendly and the cleaners do a good job.
Don't be fooled by the so called 5 pools. There is 1 main pool which is clean and pleasant. The other pools are with the sister hotels/complexes which are few streets away. The food is diabolical. The menu for half board will give you only 3 choices and adults will be offered food such as 'Fish fingers and Chips', as we discovered to our horror. You may then feel the need to eat elsewhere as we did. If you want an early night, take ear plugs as the karaoke style music is compulsory listening.

7 / 10
Jun 2005, Mrs T Larkings

I went on this holiday with a friend and she had been before and told me that although it was a nice place, the apartments were a little old fashioned but the people made up for it.
So I arrived with some anticipation. The apartment was a little old fashioned but it was clean and tidy. The linen and towels were changed every day, which is a nice bonus.
The staff were brilliant, very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The entertainment was a mix of English and Portuguese and this was nice, as there was also a good mix of both in the hotel.
I am going back in a couple of weeks, this time taking my children with me as I feel very comfortable with the standards there.
My one piece of advice is not to expect too much, but you will get a great service.
