I am very shocked by the comments which i have read as i certainly must have stayed in a different hotel. Our room was cleaned every single day and towels were changed. The air conditioning worked faboulously as did the TV and the Fridge. The hotel staff were very friendly... more

This the worst place that I have ever stayed in and would not recomend to anyone. Frankly I wouldn't board my dog in it. The place is shabby, outdated and in need of considerable refurbishment. The toilet blocks are disgusting both in the restaurant and by the beach. ... more

If you are after a basic clean resort at a reasonable price, this is the place for you.
Incredibly friendly staff and the Warri Pier restaurant for breakfast is amazing as you are on stilts in the sea.
Had some trouble keeping up with the soft drink demand, but on the whole we had a good time.

I have just returned from this hell hole. The staff, although pleasant, never really did anything except the room maids, management is a total joke. My son was subject to an avoidable accident in the Arawak terrace buffet, when one of the serving dishes filled with scalding... more

Free beer, what could be better!
Went on an all inclusive deal to the Rex Halcyon, I'm glad i read the reviews for it after i got back because while alot of them were negative I had a really good time there. the locals, whilst annoying, are okay if you take the time to get to know them, i'd go back here
Great beach, shame about the hotel
We were sold this hotel by Virgin who charged us an extra £800 for a "Larger pool view room that adequately sleeps 4", well thats if you want two people to sleep on camp beds for a fortnight and only just be able to squeeze around the room. The menu for lunch is the same every day, burger, fish and inedible pasta. The evening meal was better but it was obvious (confirmed by staff) that they were working to a very tight budget. There are also dangerous areas around the pool with tiles missing or badly cracked, we were not aware of a single child that left the hotel without an injury of some sort! But the beach is fabulous and the majority of the staff were great but those who were rude (about 20%) were ablsoutley pig ignorant despite how nice you were. There are some great trips to be had (find Tony who owns Castaways in Jolly Harbour and charter his yatch!) and we will probably visit Antigua again-- BUT NOT TO THE REX HALCYON!!!!!!
Excellent Holiday
I was somewhat apprehensive about the Hotel following the dodgy reviews I'd read on this site. However, the Hotel more than deliveries what it promises, we had a superior room which was always clean. We were on an all inclusive plan and the food was O.K. if perhaps a little unadventurous. We also dined on the Warri twice which was well worth the extra. The beach was excellent, all the staff very welcoming. If you are going, take the opportunity to explore some of the island - Shirley Heights on Sunday, and any other beaches that take you fancy - I'm not going to give away our favourites!
Happy times
Myself, Girlfriend and daughter stayed and it was enjoyable and relxing. wasn't happy with my first room got another. Made my girlfriend and daughter's holiday special won't forget this. Food was great and restaurant was lovely to-gether with the staff. entertainment was ok when held at the ciboney lounge(very hot) but entertainment at the carib bar by the seafront was excellant(other customers agreed). beach was beautiful and no hassle from vendors. My only negative view on the hotel was a member of staff (oconnor) who i felt hated us being there. still had a great time and the rest of the staff was excellant. i would like to say a very big thank you to the manager and staff for making us feel welcome and happy. please would someone pass on my regards to a lady on the beach named cathy if met selling skirts and t-shirts. she knows me as adonis (private joke) From Sammy
Depends what you paid for it......
I stayed here in late 2002 and have just rebooked for 2003. The key to enjoying this hotel is getting the right deal. I got a great deal, thought I would get very little for my money yet came away pleasantly surprised. However, I note that the actual brochure prices of this hotel in UK travel agents can be quite high. If I had paid brochure list prices I think I would have been dissapointed. Positives : Our room was large, clean, comfortable, well air conditioned and had a nice view. Breakfast buffet is as good as any breakfast buffet. Beach great - shared with Sandals that cost up to 4 times as much. 'All inclusive' drinks are fine - can you really tell the difference between Barcardi in a rum punch and local rum? Negatives : Dinner buffets somewhat bland and samey. Entertainment not very good but who cares when you can walk along the beach instead. I think there are some rather bleak rooms at the back of the property so try to get a better class of room. Conclusion - If you get a good deal you will come away very satisfied but don't pay the brochure price if you are in the UK.
Great Beach Resort
I would like to clarify that before we went on this trip we had read 2 bad write ups on this site re the Hotel mentioned above. The hotel is a 3 1/2 star with the 4th best beach in the world, very clean rooms, food could be more variety but was great!! Staff were very helpful, Hotel is in one of the best locations in Antigua.I would definitely recommend this hotel.
If not for the beach...
I visited in January/Feb of this year, just when I needed some fun in the sun most. The beach was fantastic and my room was at the furthest end of the property, literally five steps from the beach. We feel asleep to the sound of surf each night. However... the staff at the Rex are morons, hello, the phone at the front desk is supposed to be ANSWERED, not ignored for half an hour straight. The service is among the slowest I've ever experienced (we waited 20 mins to be seated in their EMPTY dock-above-the-sea restaurant, then another 20 to get some cocktails). It's almost as if these people resented us being there, infringing on their leisure time. Luckily, there's a great place down the beach called THE BEACH. Live entertainment at night, great sushi, good drinks... go there for dinner. The property itself is older and does need some updating, however I find it kind of charming in that dumpy Motel 6 kinda way. I think a fellow holiday-maker died while we were there, I can't remember.
A real relaxed place to chill out
We had a really great time at the Rex. We were a little bit wary after some of the reviews but it was a great place to go and we will certainly go back. If you keep in mind its a 3 star hotel with some 4 star features but in a 5 star setting you wont be dissappointed. I think some of the bad reviews stem from the large variation in prices people payed for the same holiday, there are bargains to be had. Dickenson Bay is a fabulous beach well deserving its 4th best beach in the world rating and the Halcyon's end of it is the best. We had a poolside room which was 30 yards from the pool and 70 yards from the beach. The staff are freindly and helpful and the beach vendors amusing and not too pushy and take no for an answer. If you want a relaxed and chilled out holiday this is the place for you.
Holiday brilliant, hotel disappointing.
We had a fantastic holiday and as we new there were problems at this particular hotel we booked room only which saved us a lot of hassle. Without this I think we would have been complaining every 5 minutes. The rooms were adequate and the housekeeping staff were really good. The best of a rather rum bunch especially the reception and bar staff who really do need some lessons in etiquette and manners. The management here need to focus more on their guests I think. We were without water for a whole day. You can imagine the state of the toilets and public places!! The management blamed the government and the drought. Then we found out that they had spent their water budget!! for the month and had just let the taps run dry...I ask you what sort of management is that. The hotel itself is past its sell by date. It needs completely refurbishing. There was little or no entertainment in the evening simply because the room was not air conditioned or placed where there is a free flow of air it is too closed in and far too warm. We didn't go all inclusive and found plenty of reasonable eating places close at hand. Apart from the Warri restaurant which was really good the food in the hotel was bland they served cheeseburger every day for lunch!! I would not go back to this hotel it really isn't up to standard but it is cheap!! and you get good access to a fantastic beach with plenty of rundells for shade better than Sandals next door who don't have any shade on the beach. So it doesn't spoil the holiday as long as you know what to expect. Rude and indifferent staff, run down public areas, toilets that don't work and basic food.Rgds Fred
We had a great wedding at the Rex
We spent 2 weeks at the Rex Halcyon Cove Hotel where we got married. We had a great time there and could not fault the staff who were friendly and helpful. We had read some bad reviews and were a bit worried beforehand but were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The food was simple but this is to be expected when you travel somewhere like Antigua - definately try the fabulous food on the Warri Pier. We would definately go back there and would recommend the hotel to anyone, however don't fly with B.W.I.A. who are the worst airline we have ever flown by.
