" Grand Royal Antiguan Rip Off "

We were in Antigua with Gullivers Travel to watch the cricket. Hotel had both teams and match officials were staying here but even so the standard of hotel was appalling. Areas around the lift and stairs filthy, bathrooms not up to standard, and for three out of our five days we were short of towels. Standards may have been one star but prices certainly weren't they were astronomical - meals seemed to factor in the taxi fare to St John's and drinks two to three times the cost in restaurants in St Johns.
Staff not particularly accomodating - apparently you need to ask for cheese on your burger despite it being itemised in the menu! A lack of facilities such as internet also made it necessary to travel into St John's and this created difficulties with our main aim - to watch cricket.
Avoid if possible.

" We stayed on an all-inclusive basis.... "

We stayed on an all-inclusive basis. The location of the hotel benefits from a long, soft and clean sandy beach with drinks & food service on the beach.

The hotel itself is oK and accommodation was reasonable, but needs updating. Staff were friendly and got to know you quite early during our stay. The kids like that. Food and drink was good with plenty of Local drinks and entertainment. Try a strong rum punch! There is a good size pool with plenty of sun beds and a bar with drinks on tap.
Out and about there is plenty to do. Hotel taxis services will take you to any part of the Island. You can hire a car as we did to visit St John's and other parts of the Island. Our stay was during Carnival, when the Island comes alive with street partying.
Overall, if you go by today’s standards and what you would expect from Antigua, the Royal Antiguan needs updating, rooms specifically.

" For most people, I would not... "

For most people, I would not recommend. This resort is very empty (after staying there i know why). Do not consider this to be an all-inclusive, but more of a pre paid meal hotel. Food was not readily and easily accessible at all times. Outside of a few people, the service was very poor.

Most workers did not even acknowledge you and acted as if you were bothering them. Local beer was good, but mixed drinks, when you could get them, were not good. Rooms had cracked and leaky tiles, poor TV reception, and lack of hot water. For years I have traveled to the Caribbean, but this is the first time I have ever had to write a negative review. There was no entertainment as well.

If food, entertainment, and good service is not important to you, then this may be an okay place for you.
