Luna Baglioni Hotel Reviews
May 2006, Miss S Reed
The Hotel Luna Baglioni is stunning and the service is second to none. It is an expensive hotel due to it being 5 star and located just off St. Marks Square, but well worth it for that special trip. I booked a suite which overlooked the canal. Typically speaking though,... more

We had a wonderful stay at the Luna. The staff was polite and a few of them very nice. They offered a boat for us to go to the island of Murano. They were always helpful with dinner reservations. The location is prime and you must go to Harry's Bar next to the hotel just to check out the scene. The rooms were large but dusty and we had to ask for towels and soap. One of our rooms was the most beautiful in the whole hotel with the large balcony but I did notice the abscence of pots and flowers that would have been a nice touch. The chocolates in the room made up for any short comings they might have though. Its just the best location don't even think about staying anywhere else.

Ahh .. the magic of Venice. We truly loved the Luna Baglioni. My husband arranged our trip from the airport in to Venice with the helpful staff at the hotel. They met us at the airport, loaded us in to a Mercedes, and whisked us off to the dock where we were greeted by a gentleman driving the beautiful, wooden boat that would deliver us to the front door of the hotel. I was dreading the thought of having to haul all of our luggage through the streets of Venice. The ride to the hotel costs about $150. But, it was worth it to us. My husband had booked the honeymoon package. When we entered the room, a plateful of chocolate covered strawberries and a nice bottle of chilled champagne was waiting for us. We had a view overlooking a small canal that led to the Grand Canal. It was just wonderful. Let's just say that my husband scored some brownie points for that little arrangement. We found the Luna Baglioni very convenient because it was adjacent to the Piazza San Marco. Our room included breakfast every day and one dinner. The breakfast was buffet style and served in the most spectacular dining room. It was a very large, beautiful room with frescoes. Wow .. what a way to wake up in the morning. A girl can get used to that! The breakfast was very good to top it off. It had something for everybody. We ended up using our free dinner for room service. That meal was just ok. A bonus of the 400 year old frescoes was that the breakfast room was nonsmoking. The hotel is a thousand years old. The first people to stay here were the knights on the way to the Crusades. It has been renovated once or twice since then. If you go, I would suggest not going in the summer. Others have said that Venice is too crowded, hot and smelly. I also liked having a room on the smaller canal because the Grand Canal would be very loud. Our next stay in Venice will definitely be at the Luna Baglioni. Ciao
FOur (not Five) Stars but a great terrace!

The Luna has the best location in Venice for tourists (that means everybody). Its prices are not bad by comparison to the top hotels, but you must go to the top end of their rooms to make it worthwhile. We booked a suite with one of the large terraces overlooking the lagoon, and made them confirm it five times, in writing! The lobby is pleasant, and I found the service very good, except upon arrival (no doorman to meet our taxi and baggage). Our suite had a good-sized bedroom and sitting room, large walk-in closet, and a moderate-sized bathroom with tub and shower (tiny). The decor was plush -- heavy gold curtains and Fortuny-style fabrics, but there were some amazing lapses in taste and cheezy objects. The TV's were cheap black boxes sitting on lucite tables with the wires exposed. There was a broken fax machine on a modern (read:$15 chinese) brass and glass stand, wires hanging out. The coffee table was 1960's lucite, serving an 18th Century sofa! Nonetheless, the linens were crisp, the maid service quite good, and the views wonderful. The terrace was huge, and structurally elegant, and perfect for sunbathing (but why waste time lolling?). It was also very sparsely decorated, with just two chaises and a tiny breakfast table with two chairs stranded at the far end. No plantings made it seem arid and desolate. But the views! Our last night was capped by a fireworks show down at the Lido which we watched from the terrace sipping Prosecco -- a fantasy departure. Venice is for tourists, so we toured with a guide who was wonderful (from the hotel) and shopped and ate. The best steak in the world (including Peter Luger, the Palm, Bern's, De Friscos, Kobe beef, etc.) is at Da Ivo in Venice, confirmed on two visits across 13 years. Get the porterhouse, watch the owner trim, cook, carve and serve it, and cry because you will never taste this meat anywhere but Venice, and the owner is not a young man.
Awesome

We stayed at the Baglioni the first week in June. We had a room on the 5th floor with unbelievable views. The room was large and the bathroom was the largest and best of all the five star hotels we enjoyed in Europe (seven in total). Great location, beautiful rooms and although it is expensive, what in Venice isn't.
Lot to be desired Luna
from yppub
I have read the previous reviews and tend to agree with the disappointment ones. This hotel is very overprices. The rooms are beautifully decorated, but TINY! So tiny I had to pile my suitcases upon each other. The bathroom was dimly lit and didn't have a shower curtain or door. In fact, the shower aimed directly out of the stall onto the floor. Also, there is no way to tell time in these rooms, no clocks, no nothing. I purchased a "package" which was to include free admission to several tourist points, a bottle of wine and a gift from their gift shop, only to find out up on arrival, that the tourist points were free anyway to everyone, the bottle of wine was only if you ate in the hotel restaurant and there was no gift, no gift shop! The staff DOES give conflicting information as stated in another review. Usually on what you will pay for activities they arrange. The prices vary greatly ie: from 40 euros to 85 euros for the same thing. The transfer charges are outrageous, 185 euros to meet me at the train station and again to take me to the airport. There is a huge communication problem. I became so frustrated that I used the computer and a translation service to write a letter to the head consierge in Italian, as English was a problem. Also, the staff is not accomodating to your request as other five star hotels are. Venice as a whole was very disappointing. They have capitolized on the all mighty dollar and tourism that it is disgusting. They will take you for all they can. Even the lowest exchange rate in all of Europe. It's all about the bucks! Even charging "cover charges" in restaurants when you spend a fortune to eat! (The charge is for use of their plates, table cloth and silver ware.)
Nice Hotel

We stayed at this hotel in early June 2004. The room that we had overlooked the walkway behind St. Mark's Square. We aske to be moved to this room because we didn't like the room originally assigned to us. (We didn't like the decor). The room we had was on the 3rd floor, and it had a small balcony. It was OK, but my personal feeling is that the rooms need to be refurbished. We stayed there 12 years ago, and it seemed nicer than. I guess my biggest problem was that it's not worth $500 per night....but what hotel is worth that much anyway? The great thing about staying at the Luna is that it's steps away from St. Mark's Square. It's also very convenient when taking a water taxi to the airport because it has its own dock next to the front door.
Standard Room not in hotel level
from A TripAdvisor Member
At an avge of 500$ per night the standard room and the continental breakfast aren´t at same level than the staff or the rest of the hotel. Standard room is very small and there is no beautifull views (in front there is a wall)
Magical, but pricey
from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family of four stayed here in December 2003 and it was... magical! The only complaint we have is the room was expensive ($450) and the view is a wall! The staff also gives conflicting information, so please be careful. We stayed in a suite with 2 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and TV. The middle room serves as the living room and also has a pullout bed. The jacuzzi was heavenly and the marble bathrooms spotless! Luxury abound and we felt like royalty! There is tea and cookies served in the lobby every afternoon. The location can't be beat, only steps from San Marco square, water taxis, and shopping, shopping, shopping! Definitely a fun stay!
Nice but not perfect
from A TripAdvisor Member
We enjoyed the Luna, but were a bit surprised that it's considered a five-star. The hotel lobby is elegant, the setting is great, and the location off San Marco can't be beat. However, our room was nothing special and was rather worn. (Our internet booking engine promised that all deluxe rooms at our rate had canal views, but each of our windows overlooked other walls.) The desk staff was also somewhat surly, and not overly helpful. For us, this made the experience much less pleasant. We live in Europe and have traveled extensively, and would not consider this a true five-star hotel. However, in its defense, it is clean and is arguably good value when considering other hotel rates in Venice. If you're looking for a good location and good rates, this is an ok choice--just don't expect five-star perfection. One more note--nearly all the guests seemed to be American.
a real oasis

Visited Venice in August with my wife, daughter(10), son(8) and parents. Having never been to Venice prior was relying on other peoples opinion for hotel choice. Bauer was recommended to us but I came across the Luna and it seemed to be a better value with comparable location. After a very long, hot, drive, boat trip and walk from Tuscany we found the Luna to be terrific. I asked for adjoining rooms for the children and were given one large corner room adjoining a small but comfortable room. The location was perfect for the things we wanted to do. Each morning the first thing we did was to walk next door to San Marco and feed the birds then went back to the hotel for breakfast which was great. The kids got a kick out of catching a gondola right by the front door. Our final highlight was leaving by water taxi again by the front door and cruising down the Grand Canal.
