When we arrived at the hotel (after spending an absolute fortune getting a taxi there) we were pleasantly surprised by how grand it looked and this carried on inside. Our room was a good size, though not much of a view. We only had breakfast at the hotel one morning at it wasn't great - hardly anything to choose from on the buffet. However, there was a really nice cafe across the road so we went there.
Obviously we wanted to do all the touristy things and we didn't realise just how far all these things were from our hotel. By the end of 4 days my feet were absolutely killing me - sensible footwear required. I would advise you to stay nearer the centre of town if you are planning on doing the usual Rome things.
As for the city itself, I can't think of enough superlatives to describe it. It really is amazing and all the tourist traps really are worth doing. If you plan to go to the Coloseum (which you should) go early morning or the queues are horrendous. Same for the Vatican - we were queueing for at least an hour.
The only bad thing is the people selling things on the street, they are everywhere. Don't shake their hands (people slip bracelets on then insist you buy them) or take anything from them as they will insist you pay. Avoid eye contact.
Also when we were due to return home there was a taxi strike, which we found out about that morning. This meant we had to get two buses and a train to get back to the airport which was very stressful. Make sure you keep an eye on things like this.
All in all though, a great city break. I would go back, just stay nearer the city centre!
