Basic but large and clean with superb views over the bay.
Towels changed and rooms cleaned once during the week.
The only thing that fell down was the fact that the bedding was changed after 7 days, not at the midweek clean.
To eat try Mivopi on the harbour front, Maria is a brilliant cook and Mike will keep you entertained. Prices are reasonable as well.

We had the triple studio on the top floor so we had plenty of space for just the two of us. The studio was very light and airy, with a fantastic view over the harbour. The balcony was perfect for the early evening ouzo and olives, as the sun had moved round to the back of the building by then - ideal for drying the bathers!
Kaliopi is basic Greek accomodation, with no frills but everything that you need. There was an electric kettle and tea towels were provided. The water is solar heated but the water was always hot.
There were two breaks in water suply but they did not last long. Just make sure you have enough in the yellow bowl ( provided) to flush the loo and keep a large water bottle filled with tap water in case you are in the middle of showering. This didn't happen but it's as well to be prepared.
Both transfer journeys were handled with our comfort in mind, so we weren't just left at an airport with hours to kill.
Halki is so relaxing and the people really friendly and welcoming. We are not usually tempted to return to a place, however much we have enjoyed a holiday but Halki will be the exception and we will certainly return to the Kaliopi.
After a very miserable experience with another tour operator and airline last year this was a real delight.

Loved Halki. Hated Kaliopi apartments. These were of the standard existing 20 years ago in Greece. The rest of Greece has improved but not the Kaliopi. The bathroom was a disaster area - the toilet leaked at the base so the floor was constantly awash, the loo seat kept falling forward at the most inconvenient times, and the shower curtain was too short to keep the water in. The beds were so uncomfortable I had to put a padded cover over the mattress in order to sleep.
The position of the Kaliopi was OK as long as you can cope with a lot of steps and steep climbs but the standard of accommodation was dire. We have complained to Olympic but they couldn't care less. As long as people continue booking this tacky apartment, they will obviously do nothing to improve conditions so, BE WARNED, don't go there.

The Kaliopi Studios are a great place to stay, clean and spacious, ours was a triple room on the top floor with lovely views over the bay, we spent many nights on the balcony with our G&T's watching the boats come in.
Contrary to previous post the walk to the Harbour is only a 2 minute stroll away, but a bit harder coming back when it's 95 degrees in the shade and up hill.
The picturesque Harbour is lined with some good Restaurants and Bars, and there is also a ATM. If you like an English Breakfast try The Grill House next to the Bakery you get real English back bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, mushrooms and toast for 5.5 Euros, they also do Gyros Pita and real chips.
For ice-cream try Muses, Miriam will tell you the history of Halki and anything else you want to know while you eat it.
It's true that there's nothing to do on Halki, except eat, drink, swim, snorkel, sunbathe, walk and read (but not all at once).
Books can be borrowed from the travel agents office(they have hundreds) and fans can be hired for 1 Euro a day.

We booked a last minute deal and were very pleased with the room we got. It was on the top floor and was a room for 3 people. The views over the harbour were amazing. The room was fairly basic as is the norm in Greece but everything was clean and worked properly. The room was a good size with doors and windows back and front which made it light and airy. There were chickens out back that made a little noise in the morning but coming from the countryside in the UK this didn't bother us! The owners lived next door and were very friendly although they didn't speak much English.
The journey over to Halki was pretty tiring and we did have to spend our first night in Falaraki (awful)!. The journey home was even worse as we spent all day in a Rhodes hotel with no room allocated to us as our flight was around 1 am. We were so exhausted by the time we got home that we felt ill. I have since learnt that if you travel with Direct Greece or Laskarina the flight times and journey are much better.
Halki itself was first class if you like the real Greece! The island is quite barren but very pretty at the same time. We took some wonderful photograph during our stay. The tavernas were great, we never had a bad meal and not too expensive for a small island. Water on the island is limited and did run out a couple of times while we were there but we coped! The walk up to the castle was well worth the effort but take plenty of water. A very friendly local gave us a lift up the last few hundred metres which was much needed.
The boat trip to Alaminia was also good but be prepared to go behind a bush if you know what I mean. There is not much for small children on the island apart from the beach and the sea of course but they would be made very welcome and they would be safe as there is virtually no traffic.
All in all Halki was well worth the extra effort. I would say the journey is too much for very young children unless you pay a little bit more and go with Laskarina. We will be returning in the future!

The island of Halki is a one hour ferry crossing from Rhodes. The main resort is Emborio where the ferry docks. A visit to this island is like turning the clock back 20 years the pace of life is so slow and the locals are more like Greek "peasants" but exceptionally friendly. There is only a handful of Tavernas and evenings are spent at one of these over a long meal and a few drinks as there is very little else to do. We stayed at the Kaliopi Studios, which are in a slightly elevated position with lovely views over the harbour, which is an 18 minute casual walk. The beach at Pandamos is 10 minute walk away. You can explore but need good walking shoes or catch one of the small boats to another part of the island. We came home so laid back we nearly fell over and have never felt so rejuvenated.
