Pontins Prestatyn Sands Reviews

brilliant for the children!
7 / 10
Feb 2012, suee

I have to admit I was shocked when I first entered our accommodation as it was very run down, not changed very much since i was there as a child (many years ago) however, my 2,4 and 5 year old children didn't seem to mind at all funnily enough.
The entertainment and staff there were fantastic, prices at the bar and shop were so reasonable, they even had a £1.00 shop full of toys and magic tricks, fancy hair bobbles, purses (the normal tat kids make u buy- but at a £1.00 it really didn't matter)ideal for small children to spend their pennies at.
The entertainment was brilliant, finishing off the childrens entertainment at a reasonable time, before having a little more grown up stuff later on, my daughter was so stagestruck and is adamamnt she's going to work in pontins when she grows up, and the daytimes were spent at the childrens playroom or doing some activity with the croc and friends,or swimming, cycling, and going to the swings...we didnt even get as far as the beach, definatly want to go again!

Cheap and Cheerful!
7 / 10
Dec 2011, Hi di hi

Just returned from a 2 night break at Pontin's Prestatyn Sands. Was very worried by the reviews I had read about poor accommodation, site facilities and food. As we had booked Club Accommodation we were allowed to check in at 2pm. Check in was very efficient and friendly. Our accommodation (5 Club Rooms) were all together and very close to the club house. They were all very clean, only downside was ours smelt a bit of cigarettes, although an afternoon with the windows open seemed to do the trick! We opted for half board, the food was traditional cheap and cheerful fare, chicken and chips, curry, stew etc. I asked for a vegetarian meal and something was cooked specially for me!! It may not be top restaurant quality but what do you expect for £30 (two evening meals and two breakfasts). Entertainment was good, evening started with Bingo, followed by Childrens' entertainment and then we had a comedian one night and a juggler the second night. As we were in Club accommodation all our electricity and bedding was included in the price, this was obviously worth booking as we were able to leave the heating on as the weather was quite cold - we did hear people saying how quick the electricity cards went and how expensive it was, and I believe bedding was charged at £10.00 each. Site is a bit tired and run down but I understand that all the sites are undergoing a refurb.
On the whole it was good value for money, you get what you pay for, it was definately worth paying for the Club accommodation. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The beach is about a 5 minute walk, I believe its beautiful but as it was stormy we could not see it as waves were crashing up onto the walkway. If you are planning a holiday to this site, book Club, make sure you enjoy basic food and go with an open mind - you may suprise yourself and enjoy it, I know we all did!!

Me, my partner and our three childern (aged3,4,7) Stayed in a classic appartment for four nights. When we arrived the the bathroom was clean and so was the kitchen. We wiped everything with anti-bac wipes before we used them any way but was pleasntly supprised after reading some terrible reviews after we had already booked! We took our own bedding just incase but didnt need it as the bedding provided was immaculate. The entertainment was great, the kids luved it!! We used the pool every day, the kids loved the slides. The nearby beaches are nice and over all we had a lovely time. We have even booked to go again in november for the bonfire themed weekend. Maybe we were just lucky to get a clean appartment.. But I honestly dnt no what some people expect for a budget holiday. If they want luxury they need to stop being so tight and dig a bit deeper!!! SNM

  • Advice: Bring your own groceries as the shop on sight is quite expensive. There is an aldi in prestatyn town aswell though :)

couldnt rate this place lower

Sep 2011, Kris

if there was a minus i could put before the rating i would, there was used condoms in the bathroom on the floor, blood on the curtains dog hair on the sofa bed a strange urine smell everywhere and when we complained to the staff we waited 3 hours expecting to be moved to another room but there solution was to go in remove the rubbers and spray some air freshener, we understand it was a budget holiday but if this was a house they would of condemned the place as uninhabitable
keep clear!!!
classic room btw

Army Camp missing the Barbed Wire!!

Aug 2011, An Unhappy customer

Awful, dated barrack style, old, uncomfortable, filthy, used toilet paper on tiles in bathroom, grime beside bath, no shower, dirty, shabby. Pull out bed with thin near black mattress with springs that were dropping out.
We were booked for three nights, only stayed for one and of course policy was not to refund/no surprise there!
Staff were rude and arrogant when dealing with them, although they offered us half board,so we tried it and I was ill 2 hours later!!
I could`nt wait to get out of there!!!

Shocking. NEVER again

Aug 2011, The Sullivans

Where do i start? Ive never experienced anything as bad in my life. Ok here i go.
Accomadation-On arrival my family & I were herded to the main hall. After mooing in line for over 3 hours (we had been told book in at 12 get your key at 4)we entered our "apartment". The first thing we noticed was the horrendous stench..... Carpets stained & covered in cig burns..... bathroom disgusting complete with the previous occupants bowel remains...happy holiday!
As I opened the heavily soiled curtains I struggled to see out of the filthy windows. The sofa bed in the lounge area was stained with either blood or faeces ( probably both) & the fridge, which was not even capable of its job, sounded like a space craft ALL through the night..... I went on this holiday with my husband, 2 kids & in-laws as we had told the kids how Pontins was a real family affair aimed at them having fun... We were led to believe the entertainment was endless which actually turned out to be access to the dirty pool, a game of table tennis or the "Bluecoats show"... We never did see a Bluecoat just a couple of lads in shiny blue tracksuits! Top tip if you dare visit this hole..... dont try to shower or indeed wash if using the cooker as it all runs on the same switch! The water heater can not be on if the electric cooker is on! The tv (portable) had 2 snowy channels & after complaining several times we were visited by maintenance.. A new(er) tv was supplied having been assured it had a perfect reception, again no picture! This was probably due to the wiring down inside the wall we were told & that nothing could be done as " what did we expect? The wall to be pulled down?" Customer service is NOT paramount at this park.. Our next door but one neighbours decided to drink in excess on our first night which resulted in us waking to a bucket outside with vomit in.. reception were advised of this on 5 occasions & finally after 3 days.... said bucket was removed! The bins on site were a feeding station & often play area for the scores of seagulls as the refuse piled up at the side of the bins.. On our first night we ventured to the main pub on site " The Queen Vic" we were not met by Peggy or Alfie but bad beer with sedement! My husband & father in law pointed this out to staff & were told they could not have a refund til the supervisor had been seen. We waited... & waited..... to then be told they could'nt have a refund but another pint! Although tempted(not) my husband walked to reception & had to speak to the duty manager to eventually receive their refund! Then for the next 24 hours my newly cleaned bathroom took a hammering!! My husband suffers with IBS anyway so this really helped! No one was bothered by any complaints made we were constantly told it would be sorted but nothing ever was. I photographed the seagull frenzy at the bins on day 2 of our 4 day stay & am forwarding a letter to Pontins themselves , Enviromental Health & Which magazine... This holiday park does not deserve its title & please please advise ALL family & friends to stay AWAY! Lets see what replies I get I will keep you posted...

pontins prestatyn is not as bad as ppl make out,we have 4 kids who truly love it,we dont mind club class never had any problems or dirty apartments.and the staff only give the moaners the crap apartments on purpose.chippy on site is terrible but there are plenty of local places to eat far cheaper.and there are loads of things to do if you bother to read leaflets or watch pontins tv for ideas.

We stayed here 13th - 20th Aug. Myself, husband, teenage daughter in one chalet (1bdrm classic) and elder daughter with her partner and 5 children all under 5 in a 2bdrm Club chalet. We almost didn't go to our holiday after reading the reviews on here but decided after the children had gotten so excited and it would have been too late to book somewhere else.. we'd go. Daughter & children had number 17, on the front, close to everything which unfortunately for her also meant all the noisy children allowed to stay up til gone midnight which didn't help her children sleep! Am aware on holiday everyone has late nights but not 7 & 8yr olds kicking the ball against the walls/steps and each other! Her chalet was clean, tidy however kitchen seemed smaller than our chalet? No mould in fridge or bathroom as several people had stated. Sofa bed wasn't the most comfortable and mattress had a couple of marks on it but once the (very) clean bedding was on, it was ok. Flooring was laminate in living room and carpeted bedrooms. Overall - for her - accommodation was reasonable. Not worth the almost £500 they paid to be in 'the best' they provide. Myself and husband and other daughter were further round on the site. I can understand why a lot of reviewers state it looks like something from 70's and to a certain extent yes it may well do but they are also in the middle of refurbishing over 200 accommodation areas and if it works for them then they aren't likely to change it now! Our chalet (218) when we first arrived - was clean, no dust, no mould, no musty smell. The bedroom was clean as was the bathroom and kitchen. The living room which doubled as our bedroom - was a different matter. The carpet looked as though it hadn't seen a hoover in a while and there were paint flakes on the floor below the window and behind the door. OH ended up using the hand brush provided and the small dustpan - to clean the floor. As it was weekend, we didn't expect the cleaners to still be on site so dealt with it ourselves. The sofa bed frame was broken on one side but was still functional although a little uncomfortable. We didn't try the food on site but went off site and got a few essentials to cook with - that's what self catering is all about! Cooker was clean but lacked an extra rack in the oven or a proper tray. Utensils were basic but clean and usable.
There were several free activities available but not to the extent they lead you to believe on the website which to me is false advertising and should be looked into. There WAS a laundrette if you asked for directions - in the first building on the right as you come on site signed as 'Snooker room' - it shares that building with the snooker area. Not the best place for it to be and the site itself could do with Signposts to enable people to find things. The pool was dated - tiling round the pool itself could do with a replacement (as they're doing the refurbishments of accommodation but we don't know what plans they do have for the place) but changing rooms were clean, showers were warm which was a bonus as the pool was cold.
The amusement arcade was squeezed between two of the 3 bars. Not ideal for people in a wheelchair or with children in buggies in my opinion but hey ho. Prices for drinks was a little more than average but if you remember you are on a holiday camp and they will add to the norm then you'll be ok. Bingo in Lunar's bar was - in my opinion - a rip off. the amount taken and the shortened games didn't warrant the pittance of prize money given out. Would have been better heading down the coast to a bingo hall but as with everything - they tried and it was a laugh. Blue coats were smiling away and did their job. Never encountered any staff who weren't friendly or helpful.
There is a £1 shop on site with a wide selection of toys etc and there is also a mini-mart which is reasonably priced for some things but slightly more than usual on others. They do 'meet the character' times in the mornings near fun factory and grand-kids loved this.. and the ball pool.. the parks.. trampolining.. mini cars.. quad bikes were there but over a certain age.. paint-balling to name a few activities..
The green areas in front of majority of the chalets was litter-free but there were a few things here an there. Biggest problem we saw was the bins themselves not closing so the seagulls had a field day! Did see 3 blokes going round with gribbers and bin bags every other day so they were aware and did try to keep on top of it. On the Monday morning we encountered the gent testing the smoke alarms in all the chalets, the cleaning crew and their supervisor. Mentioned the state of the carpet upon our arrival and the young girl admitted that the area we were in hadn't been done to her knowledge in the lead up to our arrival - honesty.. nice.. but she immediately got her hoover and redid the entire chalet for us. Supervisor pointed out they not meant to clean whilst occupied and once I pointed out it didn't look like it was done once empty either - she apologised and asked if there was anything else could be sorted also. Told her about sofa bed frame and towel rail in bathroom. She immediately got on her walky-talky and within 15mins we had electrician to sort the rail, 45 mins later we had someone to replace the bed frame! Efficient - very. Our overall experience was a pleasant one. If you can remember that everyone else is there for same reason as you and relax enough then you can have a good time here. Nowhere is perfect and we did hear others complain they had been moved due to chalet not being clean enough but if that is the only major issue on a site which is mid-refurb with a stretched cleaning crew due to such a quick turn-around, there will be one or two which get missed! Ours was - daughters wasn't. Don't go blinkered but on the other hand - don't go expecting the Ritz. Take it as it comes and if there are issues - speak to someone. When you do - remember they only do their job and the receptionist isn't responsible for the cleaners!
