Pontins Southport Reviews
" Whoever has posted anything over 0/10... "
Submitted By: AP HanksHaving experienced a few trips to Butlins (albeit on a few stag weekends), I decided to try out Pontins as I figured it would be around the same standard. I was visiting quite near Southport so I thought I’d give Pontins a go with my family. I have just got back and cannot believe what I have just experienced!
On arrival I could not believe how unprofessional every part of the service was. When we arrived at the chalet, it was a real eye opener. The carpets were filthy, the bedding and beds were stinking dirty, the walls were marked and the wallpaper was ripped. You could hardly see through the windows because they were that dirty and it looked like someone had tried to kick the door in at some point. We didn’t even try to use the kitchen area as we were afraid we’d catch something. We took some sheets and towels and covered as much as the bed as we could. We ended up leaving them there as there was no way we were going to use them again.
But, here’s the best bit! The chalets back onto each other and there is a big green in the middle. To our amazement, when we arrived, there were a party of around 25 adults with a big barbecue, sat around drinking and even more children, with footballs, water guns and the noise was just unbelievable. I’m all for kids having a good time, but surely there is a place for that, because after all it was Pontins, with plenty of other activities to do on the site. Well this went on until gone 2am. The rooms were so hot that you had to have the window open and the noise just bounced around inside the four blocks of chalets, so we had very little sleep in the two nights we were there. The second night saw someone complain to the party and there was nearly a fight. Two security gorillas turned up, but did absolutely nothing and the party carried on again until well after 2am. (And the Kids were still up).
The site in general was also a joke. The food was all deep fried or uneatable. You wait forever for the food on a table that is sticks to you because it’s never been wiped over. The beer was flat and the wine is warm. We just stayed away from the place as much as possible and in fact should have just left as soon as we arrived and got alternative accommodation in Southport. You would be mad to book a break in this complex.
Believe me, it’s been one of the most stressful weekends of my life which was supposed to be a relaxing holiday weekend. Southport itself looked quite nice and there are plenty of other things going on in the area. I feel totally amazed that anyone would ever want to stay in such a dive. The whole complex should be pulled down. I’m sure there must be some kind of standard or criteria to which you can allow people to stay in and I will be investigating, as quite simply Pontins, Southport in unacceptable in every way.

" I have just returned from Pontins... "
Submitted By: Ms J SmithWe knew that the accommodation would be basic but we never expected filthy. I have been on holidays such as this in the past but never have I had to scrub the place to make it almost liveable. The couch bed in the living area was a disaster and we were forced to take the mattress of the thing and sleep on the floor. We did not wander about in bare feet as the carpets inside the apartment were a disgrace. I am so glad we did not have little children with us as I could never let them crawl on that. We had to scrub the sink as it looked like it hadn’t seen a cloth in ages and the dishes still had the remnants of food on them. The toilet was disgusting and we had to bleach it before use. The curtains were black with mould and when opened revealed the most disgusting site of filth I have ever witnessed. It looked like someone had sneezed on them and rubbed it over the window. The curtains were closed and remained so throughout the week.
The complex its self was also quite dirty and we had the misfortune to use the public toilet in that area. It was blistering hot last week as we all know and the sanitary bins were overflowing. The smell turned my stomach. How hygienic was that?
My family and I will go to Southport again as the area is lovely but we will never go back to Pontins Southport. We expect Basic but we don't expect filth.

" After having numerous holidays at... "
Submitted By: Mrs L MarlowWe returned home this morning from a long weekend at Southport, it was awful. If you are considering booking then please do a search for reviews first. (We did but could not believe Pontins could have become so bad, our mistake.)
We last visited Southport a few years ago, just as it was finishing its excellent refurbishment. We thought we knew what to expect. The site is now a wasteland. Rubbish strewn patches of grass in between shabby rows of accommodation.
The good bits?
To be fair, our classic accommodation was very nice inside, and very clean, the bed linen crisp and white. No complaints whatsoever.
The bluecoats on the whole were as fabulous as they have always been.
The bad bits?
The security guard who greets guests on the Friday was cold and unwelcoming.
The overall impression of the site is disgusting, absolutely terrible. How the place could have been allowed to end up like this is appalling.
The reception staff are unhelpful to say the least (we asked if we could move chalet as I am 9 months pregnant and we were at the far end of the camp, we didn't mind paying for an upgrade but no help was offered, she just wanted to get back to her coffee)
The arcade staff are downright rude, my daughter told them a machine wasn’t working and she was told to "go away"
The fish and chip takeaway was closed the entire stay, and July is peak season.
The downtown diner opened on the Friday but was closed the rest of the time, and few were told that the food on display was for staff and there was none left for guests (although it was on display)
The "entertainment" guide booklet and the PTV channel gave no mention of start times so it was pot luck if you arrived at the shows on time.
Lunars was closed, only opening to show world cup matches, the main club was like a bombsite. No ashtrays meant fag ends on the carpets and dance floor. The chairs and tables were circa the 40's and worse for wear. The prices were ridiculous for drinks.
I cannot believe it could be so bad.

" Pontins Southport is the dirtiest... "
Submitted By: Mr A SmithThere were some holiday makers there who used some very colourful language and it was a shame that there wasn’t a quiet bar we could sit in later on as the entertainment consisted of a blue comedian (to be fair to Pontins they did warn families it wasn’t suitable but most stayed as there was nowhere else to get a drink with the kids in tow). The kids had a great time however. The climbing activities while seeming safe where chaotic with kid’s just milling around and no real organisation.
A word of warning while the place seemed safe before 11pm it got loud and rowdy after 2pm with all the drunken folk who didn't and never do seem able to understand some people want to settle to sleep without loads of screaming while they get back to there apartments. And finally I would be wary of the positive reviews posted on this site as they read like they were posted by Pontins sales reps.

" I wouldn't really say it was amazing... "
Submitted By: Miss L DaviesAnyway, overall I would say my holiday at Pontins was really fun. The only thing that would improve it would be to make the basic rooms a bit cleaner and have those brown signs showing you were to go. lv Laura xxx

" I have just arrived home from a 4 day... "
Submitted By: Mrs J ImpeyThe cleanliness of the apartment was bad as there were stains of grime on living room walls, mould in bathroom, broken flooring in bathroom, broken base to main door frame and especially a grimy, stained sofa bed which actually had washable covers on which may have NEVER seen a washing machine!
I have written to and posted photos of this Apartment but vowed never to go there again.
Reading other comments on this site has made me feel a lot better so I now feel my complaints are valid and feel nobody should have the misfortune of visiting this hotel again.

" Club accommodation - could not fault... "
Submitted By: Mrs N KerrQueen Vic pub food reasonably priced slightly slow service but food very good and plenty of choice. Lots and lots to do for my active 2 year old. Most priceless moment meeting postman pat. Worth every penny.
The whole resort is slightly tired looking and in need of a revamp but if you look past that its a great holiday for kids, staff all willing to help and resort well situated.

" Well where on earth should I start?... "
Submitted By: Miss B W MiltonI will never, in my entire life, go back to Pontins Southport!!!!! It was disgusting! The chalet was filthy! The whole place was a mess!!!!!!!!!
I didn't even have my bed sheets and blankets there, I had to go ask for them! And don't even mention the entertainment!! The only thing I enjoyed about Pontins was leaving through the gate!!!!!
The arcade was ok, there was a few broken or faulty machines, but it’s to be expected with the scum that go there!!!!! All week there was fighting, damaged property e.g. smashed windows and machines. I am really unhappy with my holiday there!!!

" What can I say about Pontins, my... "
Submitted By: Mrs A Robinson

From the staff to entertainment to security if I could give more than 10 out of 10 the believe me it would be alot more. The reception staff are always happy to help the bluecoats, well what can I say about them, I have never in all my life met a bunch of people like the blue coats, they always have a smile on there faces, full of life and they must absolutely adore kids because what they do with the children is amazing, from the way they talk to them to the way they entertain them is fantastic. Even for me as a 33 year old mum and my 38 year old husband and the kids grandparents Pontins makes you feel like your alive.

Facilities are the best. Pontins don’t care if your spending money they even help you save money with there money off vouchers which believe me do save you alot of money, they care alot more about you enjoying yourselves and making sure you have lots of fun and a real relaxing holiday and with the security on the site you can relax because my kids were so safe, there is no way they could get off the complex on there own, the gat is manned 24/7 and there is always plenty of staff around the site. Also no one can get into Pontins unless they have a special pass to say they are staying there.

In all will be going back to Southport Pontins again and again and again, I been all over on my holidays and have never in my life experienced anything quite like a Pontins holiday so thank you Pontins for making me and my family have such memorable holiday. You want to know how good it is my two children cry every time its home time they never want to leave and its hard for me to hold back the tears sometimes, that’s what a Pontins holiday does to you. Keep it up Pontins.
" Lovely clean well kept club class... "
Submitted By: Mrs N BrownThe put you up bed in the living area was not comfortable but the two beds in the bedroom were.
We were on a dance competition weekend so knew a lot of the people there, the atmosphere was lovely, very exciting!
The food was good and reasonably priced, the alcohol was extortionate and we resorted to taking our own when we went out at night, I expect to pay a little more at these type of places but I will not be ripped off.
The main complaint for us was the lack of good extractor fans in the main entertainment complex. The smoke was so thick it was like fog, this spoiled things for us alot and seemed to taint everything.
Overall though a good weekend - next year we hope to get out and see some of Southport itself!

" I had heard through the grapevine... "
Submitted By: Mrs A Robertsonfor a single bedroom apartment, (living area also had a double bed settee), and a fair size list of free activities I was quickly and easily able to pay, by credit card, the fee of £190.00.
Not being familiar with the surroundings the site was a little difficult to find but we got there after spending about ten minutes looking for the local land mark they suggested but could not find, we landed on their “doorstep” anyway quite by accident.
At the gate, (the only gate as the whole site is fenced off) was a friendly welcoming guard who gave instructions and directions to the reception area where we booked in ( our booking in time was 4 o clock but we could have arrived at any time to use their amenities and activities free of charge, they suggested we keep the children’s swimming things handy so they could swim if we arrived early).
booking in took only a few minutes, there was no waiting in line as everything was so efficient. We were given directions to our apartment (one minute away from reception)and told if we had any problems or concerns with the chalet or anything else, to get back to them and they would sort it as quickly as possible.
The rooms were plain but immaculate and with anything we would need for our stay there (even a bin and sweeping brush, and colour TV to entertain the kids while we unpacked)
The bedding looked new it was so white.
The bathroom had a small bath with a ledge for babies and a shower, toilet and sink, again, spotless. There was also a line that could be pulled across the bath to dry things on and a heater which was up high on the wall so I had no worries of my little ones being inquisitive and getting burnt ( it was hot) the showers temperature controls were also up high.
After settling in we went back to the reception area, only to find it was right in the centre of the main entertainment building, I was a little wary of losing the children on the first night but after getting to know the staff that night and the next day I realised no harm could come to them, security was fantastic, ( my 4 yr old had stepped out of the family room only to be handed back to mummy)
The place has entertainment on from 9am till 9.30 at night for the kids (all ages)from play pits for tots to abseiling and swimming, for the teenagers, magic shows and cinemas, balloon modelling, adventure hunts, dinner with the friendly caricatures, colouring competitions etc all free. All day, every day there was something on for all three of my kids age 15, 6 and 4 (I didn’t want to come home either when my 4 yr old son realised we weren’t going to be “living” there.) The entertainment later on at night was for the adults but children were welcome too, there was nothing that could have been dangerous or offensive to them anyway. At around 11pm a disco started and went on till 2am in the morning for the younger adults there.
The entertainment staff were wonderful not only did they work all day with the kids (my kids knew them all by first names after the second day) but they were up on stage at night too keeping us adults happy. and they were very good no not good, fantastic at what they were doing, from panto (humpty dumpty) to being the main cabaret of the week singing and dancing.
On the 5th day of our stay there, my husband arrived without warning (to surprise us). Reception quickly and efficiently upgraded our chalet to a 2 bedroom apartment, she apologised for not being able to help us move our belongings explaining some staff were off ill. But we only had to move over the road anyway so it took about an hour in all, but we were the lucky ones as there could possibly not have been a room for us to move to. we did have to pay an extra £60
There was an on site store with reasonable prices selling food stuff, papers, freshly made (on the premises) pastries and bread, small holiday presents and sweets etc. I found it easier to visit a large supermarket near by to buy the bulk of our shopping though.
Their restaurant was second to none the food, atmosphere, staff, layout, service could not be faulted.
Pontins Southport is situated within feet of their lovely well kept beach, which is life guarded, and has a bus stop outside, I didn’t use the bus so I’m not sure how often they run.
As a fitness fanatic I got a little restless so headed of for a run along the beach at around 6 each morning, on my third days run I noticed one of the guards looking out for me coming back, we got chatting and she said one of the staff had asked them to keep an eye out and be aware of my run and ensure I was safe. What more can I say about the place and the people there.
In all there was nothing missing from our holiday at Pontins and we will definitely be going back there.

" Just spent 5 days at Southport,... "
Submitted By: Mr D WrightWell!!!! Arrived for 2pm check in, went smoothly, finally found a parking space and had to lug cases to apartment (chalet). You can-not park in front of your apartment for unloading. Found a few items missing from inventory as well as no quilt covers at all. Enquired with chamber maids if we should have any, got it sorted in the end. The standard of cleaning in the room was appalling to say the least. We had to buy some bleach and clean the bathroom ourselves. Is was minging. Settled in ok. Went for the club room, got the towels which were white and clean, to be honest they where the cleanest towels we have ever had in all our years travelling, even abroad, even the sheets where white. Don't expect a good night sleep though, beds lumpy.
Activities:- there is a good selection of activities for the kids all day, we were very impressed with the variety. Although you do have to pay extra for some out of the school holidays. The indoor pool was warm and in desperate need for a lick of paint. Changing rooms where also clean. Evening entrainment was ok depending on what was on that night.
Food:-ate our first and last meal in the queen vic pub, hour and a half wait and it was terrible, we sent our daughters back, wasn't cheep either. The hot dogs in the main room were £2.50 each for a large one, what a rip off. Fast food place was anything but fast, the people working there were on the bar, shop, and food outlets changing throughout the night, and never did i see them wash there hands after taking your money and getting your food. Don't eat there.
The shop is also a bit pricey but it is a site shop. Expect it.
The fosters is £2.50 pint and £2.70 for Kronenberg, I was bad on the Kronenberg, I was sure the fosters was weaker than in my local.
OUT AND ABOUT:- we eat out for the main meals, went to the pub opposite the gates, good beer, not much selection on food but tasted ok. Would recommend.
We also went into Southport at night , there is a retail park which has pizza-hut, Franky and Benny’s, Italian, Mexican, cinema and bowling alley etc all next door to each other, would strongly recommend going there for an evening. Bowling @£3.50 pp, very good.
Also pleasure island theme park, opened 12pm till 5pm , cost us £50 for a family pass with wristbands, we also got a free meal for each of us and ice-cream. All well as discount vouchers, 5 hours was plenty time for us we went on all the rides we wanted to go on, minimum waiting on all rides, also a good go-carting track round the back, definitely worth a visit on a nice day. If you walk behind the costal properties there are rows of shops and not your usual tacky Blackpool shops, to be honest we nearly got lost going down all the streets. A beautiful place.
One thing we never managed to do was get to the sea, I was told it was a long way out but damn, we walked down the pier to get a look at it through the telescope. There is an oil rig to the left of the pier, and when its dusk it looks like something out of "war of the worlds". Something new for the kids to say they've seen, I would go back to Southport but not to Pontins, saw a sign for a caravan park a mile down the road, maybe there next time. But this is only one families opinion, happy holidaying

Especially the toilets. Onto the chalet/hovel. As is said in previous reviews, the carpets, seats, windows, kitchen area and bathroom were all filthy. I wonder how much the site shop makes on bleach? Basically, we went here to give our grandchildren a little holiday. From now on we will take them abroad with us. Never again in UK. Totally disgusting!!!
