Our holiday to Naxos ended up being the best holiday we have ever had. It was beautiful, hot and cheap! It’s the kind of place we were looking for no clubs but a decent laid back nightlife that goes as long as you do. The food was to die for.
Scirroco in the square do a great Moussaka and La Girasol is an Italian that is highly recommended. We ate out at least twice a day and every meal was excellent. There are several good beaches which are sandy. There is plenty to do if you don't want to laze on the beach - watersports, day trips. Hire a little buggy or moped and zoom off round the island.
There is also an open air cinema which plays films in English - we watched 300 - great setting for this film. Everyone speaks English too. It’s not too commercial like some places but has all the facilities you need while remaining a typical unspoilt island. The bus service is ridiculously cheap - about 1.50 Euros gets you to anywhere on the island.
I couldn't get over how clean the water was in the port and this was mirrored throughout Naxos, no litter.
Accommodation - typically Greek - small and basic but cleaned every day. Sunny Beach looked worse than it was when we arrived after quite a long journey. Its surrounded by scrub but when you explore you find its a stones throw to the beach and everywhere else is gorgeous. For 3 star I was expecting a bigger pool and perhaps a bar and reception but these can be found 5 minutes walk away at Naxos Holidays Hotel. Reception staff were helpful and on duty 24 hrs.
Journey - A flight to Mykonos and then a ferry. I was a bit annoyed that Kosmar did not tell us we would have a 2 hour wait for the ferry in the blistering heat with nowhere to shelter. We were pulling sun cream and sandals out of our case in the port. The ferry is small and does not carry vehicles. The crossing to Naxos takes about 2 hours as passengers are dropped off at Paros on the way. Refreshments were available on the ferry but the toilets were quite rough!
I would definitely go back to Naxos - we spotted some more 'comfortable' hotels whilst walking around.
If the accommodation had been more comfortable I would have given this holiday 10/10. Sunny Beach is ok for a week but for me I couldn't have stayed longer - needed a bit more room and a comfy mattress.
