I visited the Ramada Hotel on the outskirts of Amsterdam's city centre in March this year and more overly it we had a pleasant stay.
The hotel is situated in a quiet street about ten minutes tram ride from the centre, (the tram stop is close and the service is frequent). The room we stayed in was basic, medium-sized but pleasant enough. Although we asked for a double room we got a twin one, which was slightly annoying.
The staff were unobtrusive and ever-helpful. I'm sure they spoke better English than I did, despite all being Dutch!
We dined in some of the local restaurants outside of the centre where the food was delicious, whilst we were surrounded by locals rather than other tourists. This gave the experience a whole more cultured feel. The meals were reasonably priced too.
If you're after a stay in Amsterdam in relatively cheap accommodation with the city on your doorstep, (and some place to practice cycling without too much traffic if you wish!) then the Ramada Hotel is for you.

Hotel was great. Reception staff very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Room very clean and a good size for a three star hotel. Location was reasonable. It was a ten minute walk from the train station, and within easy walking distance of all the major sites.
Amsterdam is an interesting place with fantastic architecture. Did an interesting canal tour, there are lots of different tour operators available and we went with Thomson. Very worthwhile doing.
As a vegetarian, I found it easy enough to eat and there was some great food, but not in a lot of venues, apart from your usual franchised Pizza Hut etc etc.
Three days was long enough to see the main sites and have a good break away from it all. Definitely would recommend and would go again.
