Libertel Moulin Hotel Reviews

9 / 10
Jan 2006, Miss JK Moss

This hotel was fabulous - just round the corner from the Moulin Rouge - a great view from your window! The room itself was clean and modern - nothing bad could be said about it at all. The staff were very friendly and helpful - helping us plan our day trip to Disneyland.... more

Too close to Pigalle sex area
My wife and I stayed at the hotel for four days. The rooms are very small with a tiny bathroom and a bed. There is no air conditioning in the hotel and was given a fan for the room. The hotel is way too close to sex shops and Pigalle and people scream all night long outside hotel. The breakfast cost $13 and consists of fruit and coffee as well as yogurt. It is alright but not worth the price. The front desk staff was courteous and helpful but wouldn't say it is a three star hotel. I would not stay there again.
Libertel Moulin
I purchased my stay at this hotel through Priceline and I read the other reviews later. I too was nervous as we were was traveling with 2 small children. The hotel was clean and well maintained. The rooms facing the street were indeed loud with traffic and other noise all night long. After the first night we asked to be moved to inside rooms. This was done without any problem. The hotel staff, especially the day desk manager, were extremely helpful, considerate and a general pleasure. The inside rooms do not have a view, but were comfortable and quiet. My stay was pleasant and the people of Paris (even around the Moulin/Pigalle area), were considerate and charming.
No problems whatsoever.....
Just like the previous guests, I was worried about our 4 day stay but everything was just fine and my wife and I would stay there again without hesitation. In fact, the older reviews made me nervous and fed my doubt. The room, as expected for the price, was adequate (a lick of paint here and there would have been nice but this is a minor criticism) and met our needs. The staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient. I was concerned that noise would be a problem after reading the other reviews but it wasn't - we stayed Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (23 July to 25 July) and slept with the window open all night (I think the room fan probably disguised any noise outside!). I can understand people being nervous of the location given its proximity to the Moulin Rouge and the type of characters you can expect to find in the district - in truth, I have more problems in London (of which I'm a native) and the average Parisien was very friendly and more concerned with getting on with their own lives than bothering tourists (the only tiny problem we had was the beggars around Notre Dame!). The hotel's location was actually a bonus as it was easy to walk to many districts and well placed for the Metro. We tended not to eat in the immediate vicinity of the hotel (the street cafes were fine) and often walked back from the Grand Boulevards or around L'Opera late at night without any difficulty. Just go and enjoy yourself - we did.
Our stay was just fine!
Like the previous reviewer, I was VERY nervous about our stay here after reading the reviews here. (We were only booked for one night on our way back from Italy before catching a return flight...but still, the reviews here were pretty bad!) Anyway, we stayed there on July 2 and had a perfectly pleasant experience. Yes, our room and bathroom was small (and, I'm not sure whether it was supposed to or not, but ours did not have air conditioning...but they did provide a fan, and opening the window gave us a nice gentle breeze!) but it was clean and the staff was always very friendly to us. The hotel was only a half a block from the metro stop (Blanche on line 2) and we actually found this very convenient, despite transferring to various lines to get around. Finally, I will agree that the noise from the "nightlife" outside might have been a problem...but we were actually given a room with a window that faced the interior courtyard of the hotel, so it was not an issue for us. All in all, I would say that Priceline should probably change this to a 2-star rated hotel...but you know, you get what you pay for...and we only paid 82 US Dollars for our one night (less than half of what the rate on the back of the door listed)...and it is pretty much peak season. So I think it's fine if your expectations aren't too high.
Disagree w/ previous reviews
The other reviews about this hotel made me very nervous about my impending stay at the Libertel Moulin. While it wasn't the Ritz, it was clean and surprisingly quiet. I even slept with the doors open one night. The breakfast was plentiful and the staff was very helpful and friendly. My only small complaint was that the location is a bit remote -- the Metro stops nearby almost always required a transfer to arrive at an interesting location. Other than that, I'd give this place a thumbs up.
nice people, insane noise outside all night
While the staff of the hotel was nice, polite and respectful, the noise on the street outside the hotel was outrageous. The cars were stacked, blaring music, and honking constantly. This went on each night we were there (we had to leave) until 7am. Probably due to the fact that the hotel is 1 block from the Moulin Rouge and yet still unexpected (until 7am!). The staff was not particularly proactive or helpful in trying to accomodate us, at least until we decided we had to leave to salvage our trip, then all the options started flying but by then we felt it too risky to chance even 1 more nearly sleepless night.
Not Bad But Not Great
As Paris tourist hotels go, this one is average. Rooms are typically small and bathrooms are the same. I booked through Priceline for US 71 for an April trip so the rate was great - probably at least half of a comparable hotel. Contrary to other reviews here, I thought the staff was friendly and accomodating. I didn't ask for the world though - I wasn't expecting the Ritz. When the shower drain plugged, they quickly and cheerfully moved me to a nicer room. They were always pleasant and English (or my bad French) wasn't a problem. The main issue is the hotel's location: It's within sight of the famous Moulin Rouge - and all the accompanying "entertainment" nearby. Porn shops, bars, and strip clubs are common. Unless you are a lone male or in a group of males, people leave you alone otherwise they assume you are there for the entertainment. If you aren't, it's annoying. Europeans have different tolerances for these things and they walk by with their children without a thought. An American family, especially with little children, would not be pleased and certainly uncomfortable in this neighborhood. Another problem was the noise: the street that is home to the hotel has plenty of noise at night from honking car horns to loud conversations and thumping bar music. There is a bar next door and the raucous crowd spills into the street in front of the hotel. You have to keep your window closed if you are a light sleeper. Overall, the hotel was ok, the price was great, but it's more like a two-star.
Terrible, really terrible
This as one of the worst places I have stayed in, in all my holiday. Very very small hotel and rooms. Placed in a smoking room even though I booked a non-smoking. Was told that the rooms are full for the night so that cannot change me. Requested to be changed next day. Was asked to bring out my things and left them in the lobby. When I came back from touring, the day staff did not pass on the message so there was no room. Had to be taken to another of their hotel down the room. Nobody to help in carrying load. Unhelpful and I don't care attitude front staff. Very small, dark, stuffy and smelly room. Lots of noise from the road and drunkenness at night from outside. I was very very disappointed. This was my first holiday going off on my own. I had to call my booking agent before I was given a not much bigger room. No air con and not enough tiny fans to go around. In their hotels, where they had air cons, learnt they had all broken down. Staff very unhappy with present manager and were ready to complain to you about management. Resolved never to book into a 3 star hotel. I eventually enjoyed my holiday when I went to Brussels from there and had a lovely hotel. Although in all, breakfast was not bad and very close to the metro. In short, think twice before you BOOK THIS HOTEL.
this is not a 3 star hotel
i bookd this hotel through priceline, asking for a 3 star hotel. i consistently had bad experiences from themoment i arrived. the first room they put me in was stifling, with no ventilation of any kind (the tiny fan supplied for the room did not work). the next room also had little ventilation, again with no fan, but it was on a lower floor, and was cooler. however, there is virtually no sound insulation, and i could hear everything going on in nearby rooms. the front staff were generally unhelpful. i have been to paris many times, so i don't have any unrealistic expectations about parisians. in fact, over the years, i have never really had any problems with the french people. they are no more or less courteous than other residents in a capital city. it is always an individual, rather than a collective experience. however, this hotel staff was a little more indifferent than should be expected in a 3 star hotel. whci is another thing: this is no 3 star hotel. the one positive person to person experience was the lady who ran the dining room. very very courteous and friendly. the breakfasts, however, are too expensive-- they really gouge you. PASS ON THIS HOTEL.
So-So and Nothing More
Of course, being Paris, the room was tiny, but the bathroom was decent. In fact, the bathroom was probably the best part of the room. The bed was uncomfortable (and I don't just mean scratchy sheets I love Egyptian cotton and wasn't expecting it but the mattress! Terrible), the refrigerator didn't work, and the ventilation was a little iffy kinda stuffy. And there was a dirty towel on the floor of the room when we arrived. Also, hearing the neighbors come home wasn't fun. A little too cozy. But the staff was helpful, the lobby clean and bright, and the breakfast nook was cute. However, for $13 a day, the buffet of cereal and bread wasn't worth it. Eat out. Go to the Monoprix that's right on the corner, just steps away. They have groceries and the like.As for the neighborhood, I didn't mind being near Pigalle, since the hotel was so close to the subway stop (Blanche). And there were some decent, reasonable restaurants in the vicinity, if you walked up the hill (Rue des Trois Freres). And I always felt safe, if that's a question. Would I stay at that particular hotel again? No. There's no real draw.
