Americain Hotel

We stayed at Hotel Americain for two nights during a recent long weekend trip to Paris. The hotel is walking distance from Gare du Nord train station (if catching the Eurostar). It takes about 20 minutes. The nearest metro station is at Republique and is only about five minutes walk away. Very convenient. The area around Republique is quite nice and although it has a few tourist hotels, its still typically Parisian with bakeries, cafes and bars. Stayed from 4thOctober until 10th October 2006.. 2 Star Hotel which from accommodation,staff friendleness, and location was better than some of the 3/4 star hotels we have stayed in Europe.. Great location near the Place de Republic ....handy to resturants transport (metro trains,buses) and some other amenities such as banks,laundramat... Close to the clothing mfr area. As a French teacher, I have traveled to Paris several times and have stayed in a variety of hotels. This spring we stayed in the Hotel Americain while traveling with a group of students. You must remember that Parisian hotels are *not* your typical huge gigantic American hotels, with pools, breakfast buffets, 100 channels of cable, big beds, etc etc.. Be prepared for a simple room, furnishings and small bathrooms. That being said, this hotel was very clean, and had everything we needed for a great price. The staff was awesome.... more

I think that considering this hotel is a 2 star it's excellent, its in a great location and only a short walk from Place de Republique for the Metro. The breakfasts were lovely, fresh croissants and bread every day (we saw the delivery van!). Although there isn't a restaurant, the hotel is conveniently located for a huge number of bistros, cafes and restaurants; all of which looked excellent. The Hotel Americain provided a wonderful experience for this French teacher travelling with ll students. The day and night staff were ready to help at all times, friendly, very supportive. The hotel from outside looks very shabby. Upon entering the reception, the receptionist gave us a frosty look and informed us they were full. We replied we had already booked and the receptionist gave us our key after processing us. When we got into the room, it was tiny, one of the lamps had broken, there was damp on the wall and a plug socket hanging off the wall. There were twin beds when we had asked for double. We spent 3 days in this hotel following the advise of some Australian friends that have stayed there in July. We were actually very pleased by the location (close to the Centre of Paris) and by the good quality of the rooms. They are very clean and give you all what you need for such a good price. The staff is very friendly and speaks engligh. It's a great value for money hotel in Paris. And we will return during our next trip to Paris.

We booked this hotel via their own website and had to trust they had received our booking, as we received no reply to confirm it. Be prepared to give them a call to check your reservation. The hotel is basic, the rooms small but with your own bathroom. The location is still central enough to be accessible to the Seine and the Bastille, and if you like walking then Notre Dame is the closest major city attraction. The Republique Metro is very handy. This hotel is 69euros per night at the moment, we got a deal using eurostar which was excellent as we got a free first class upgrade. Very near to Place de Republic which is quite lively. Some reasonable cafes but drinks can be quite pricey 8euros for a medium beer! Hotel is basic with no air con or even fans, it was 32deg in july so we had to buy a fan. Hotel Americain is a few blocks from the Republique metro station which is good but overall a little out of the way. The walk back at night was a little dark. The hotel staff isn't terribly friendly but one person does speak English. The rooms are small but clean and the hotel is safe. It was exactly what we were looking for the price. Closer to Place de Republique there are lots of cafes and there is a great kiosk that sells amazing tortes and crepes until late at night.
